Well from what I've played so far I've really enjoyed it but then I really enjoyed playing the original Elite on a Beeb not long ago....

I've only been playing Solo so far but this will be my first foray into playing with real people. I've even invested in one of these :

Maybe i'll even try other multiplayer stuff :-D

The initial buzz of playing Elite has waned a little and I worry that this isn't ambitious enough.

Yes I know this is still beta, and they probably have loads more to add. But I do think that this is going to be compared to the X series of games and although it looks more polished I think it's lacking a lot of content. So with X you have a long playable mission, lot's of different ships, many different types of stations, including ones you can buy and run yourself....I haven't seen anything like that in Elite.

Again, I know it's Beta, but beta should be about refining what you are going to release and the core game should be mostly complete, unless a significant amount of content and game play is added I do think this will be unfavourably compared to some other games of this type.

Personally I though owning stations and commanding fleets in X added a layer of tedium to the game that took away from being a space pilot. I was suddenly looking at spreadsheets rather than having adventures. Different people like different things I suppose.

I think what will give it longevity is the background simulation (which isn't really in yet) which allows for dynamic events such as wars, famines, colonization etc.. it will create missions based on this and also draw players together.

Also eventually the expansions such as atmospheric flight and landing, and the out of your ship gameplay, but you will have to buy them separate if you haven't got them already..

Funnily enough, I was thinking the same thing.

An updated version of Elite won't cut it, there's just not enough depth for modern gaming. But at the same time, they've got to make sure they don't stray too far away from the core concept.

At the moment, they're obviously getting the core concepts sorted (as they should) but I'll be interested to see where they go from here.

Exactly this. It doesn't matter what they add, it doesn't need to specifically be a plot, or being a fleet commander, or owning your own conglomerate...but it does need to be more. Right now, there are 2-3 different types of station and 5-6 different ships, most of which look pretty similar....they need variety to add life to the game.

Does this work on mac?

Tempted by this as it seems like it could be good laugh. A guy at work has just got it to go with his nwew OR and says he is enjoying it. If it is compatible with mac I would assume I could pay with/against him even though he is on PC?

But for £50 would it be better spent giving EVE a go?

Any opinions welcome lol

Been playing the open Alpha/Beta on and off for a few weeks now. If I'm in online play, how do I know which ships are NPCs and which are other human players? Also, is there a knack to coming out of supercruise at the right time so as not to totally overshoot whatever you were heading for?

Players have a hollow icon on the scanner, and their names are preceded by CMDR, you don't see that many to be honest, the networking is still WIP and space is mindbogglingly big.
For supercruise, keep your throttle in the blue area on the display right of the scanner and it should slow down automatically. when you are within 1000km and going slower than 1000km/s it will say safe disengage ready, press whatever key you have set for fame shift drive/supercruise and you should drop out in the right place.

Thanks for that. I hadn't really considered which ships were or weren't NPCs but as I entered a station to dock last night I noticed a fairly large ship bumping into things and making a hash of landing on a pad, then seemed to give up and struggle to orientate itself to get back out of the station again. I ended up wondering whether this was someone having their first ever go of the game or some sketchy AI code...

Thanks also for the tip on the supercruise, I'll check that out this evening.

OK. What is it about this game that stops me getting bored just flying from station to station ? Just purchased my first Eagle :-)

Its Beta and alot of the final bits in the game is still missing. Go pirate and get a huge bounty on your head or go headhunter and kill loads of pirates. Yet it is easy to max out your craft and go cobra or anaxonda which ever your chosen weapon at the moment. Trial all the different type of weapons to see which fits your fav method of killing. Or try to get the best ever profit from a single load from multple jumps.

I'm waiting for final game didint want to get bored of part release like a few people are.

Well that's me until the next Beta release. I've probably spent around 15 hours and really enjoyed it. Lost my ship 3 times for no reason after a jump and cant be bothered to build my credits up again.

Given me a taste thought :-)

On missions where you have to kill someone, how do you find them? I tried one the other night, entitled "Cleaners Required" or similar, suggesting I had to kill someone but there was no clue whatsoever as to where to look for them...

Nice but the monitor frames would be an immersion breaker for me I think.

See what type of ship it wants you to attack, civilian, authority, pirate etc... and just blow up however many of those it says. I had issues with the counter resetting when I left an area, so try to get them all in one place (a nav beacon or resource extraction site for example)

The exception seems to be when it asks to kill a specific ship, such as the pirate lord.... never found him yet.

The missions are at an early stage yet, I expect more depth will come when they are tied into the planned background simulation.

The one I attempted the other night was a named NPC, last night (this was what prompted me to post) was a pirate lord. I have also seen one or two that say destroy x number of such and such a type but again no indication where to find them. Fair enough, I'll leave these be for now. I'm unlikely ever to win a scrap against any more than one other ship at a time right now, I've been "interdicted" out of supercruise a couple of times and generally had my arse handed to me...

My word.

I've been enjoying my Oculus Rift. I wasn't going to buy Elite until it was released, but I caved due to the YT vids.

Despite it not being 100%, the chromatic aberration, some screen-door effect, and juddering....totally blown away by it. Most amazing level of immersion, the effects are outstanding - absolutely love looking at the floating HUD's to activate them, and the "charging" message that floats in front of you before the supercruise kicks in.

Due to the current issues with the current OR, it's not really worth it unless you plan to develop on it, but I implore any Elite fans to get the consumer version of it when it's released next year; it'll blow you away.

OK Couldn't help myself.... Back into it... Is their a quicker way to make cash ? I'm running between 2 star systems. Make about 800 profit one way and 1700 the other... Going to take a long time to afford that Cobra ...

Currently have around 15k in Cash..

Scavenging is the quickest way I found in a sidewinder, go to LP-whatever it is, the anarchy not far from where you start, and explore the unidentified signals, some of them are floating gold canisters you can sell on the black market at 4500 each, presumably leftovers from a pirate attack. They show up as stolen though, so don't take them anywhere where there's police.

Just be ready to run for it if any ships turn up.
