generate damage when out exploring? aside from accidentally flying into a sun
For me, this. I just get bored/careless with all the jumps and cruising. Right now as I type this I'm cruising 348,000ls to a black hole (it's not the biggest mass in the system!) so I'll probably smear myself onto that. I'm also playing on a laptop at the moment rather than my usual rig and it's pretty laggy, so when jumping into a system I can bounce off the star with no time to react. I also once tried to repair my thrusters when supercruising at about 150c...bad idea, instant dropout and 3% hull damage. The "safe" way to travel is to hit the zero throttle key during the countdown for the jump but it can get a bit boring throttling up/down.

Indeed, the effects as you get closer to the centre look pretty good. I've now re-equipped my Asp for deep space (more heatsinks, and extra hull strengthening) which has reduced the jump range to 31ly but gives me a bit more headroom for careless moments. This time my plan is to get to Sagittarius A* and just float about there for a bit scanning star type A systems. As you say, the density is something else compared with some completely dead space areas on the way in.
Frontier got back to me about my previous ship destruction...apparently it is something that has been reported by a few pilots and is under investigation. I've been given my ship rebuy costs + 5,000,000 credits as compensation but my exploration data is lost. I don't care about the credits but I feel the loss of the data...I'd found some really interesting stuff including about 6 earthlikes, countless terraformable worlds and even some 100% metal planets. Ho hum.

Just turned in for the night, only 950ly from SagA.. thats only 30 jumps in my Asp...
After about 2 months of missions and trading I finally have my clipper. Not sure how many hours that took but it feels like forever since I don't get to play that much.
I included the bigger cargo holds when I budgeted for the new ship and outfitting, but I forgot to budget for how much the cargo itself would cost, so although I can now carry 240 I'm stuck at about 120 for a little while. Whoops!
Also, I didn't realise how much of a hindrance a 10LY jump range would be, need to get that upgraded soonish.
Lastly, it seems I can't dock at the outpost on my current 2800cr/t trade route. Annoying but not the end of the world because presumably the higher cargo capacity will rinse it in a few trips anyway.
Not my most successful upgrade I've got to say but glad I got there in the end! Now, do I keep playing or go back to the SC alpha...

This is what I'm trying to get. How long did it take you to get baron rank? I'm 'Outsider' at the moment, I reckon it's going to take a while to bump up the ranks, frustrating as I never knew you had to have this rank even when I have the cash!

It's hard to say. I've been playing around 3 hours a week and it was probably 3 or 4 weeks worth of missions. There is some RNG built in to it which may have slowed them down (or even speeded them up!).This is what I'm trying to get. How long did it take you to get baron rank? One thing which might help cut down some time is to find a location which has all the main economies you need for missions, usually AG/IN/HT/EX/RE, close by. Once you've found some close together you can blast through the missions quite quickly, and if you spend some time while you're at them checking the markets you might be able to sneak some trades in too. E.g HT > EX or RE > IN

Will certainly do that, thanks. One thing which might help cut down some time is to find a location which has all the main economies you need for missions, usually AG/IN/HT/EX/RE, close by. I Loved the clipper but just upgraded to a python. The clipper is great on paper but just too compromised for me. The tiny fuel tank nearly killed me twice. The Shields are just weak. The hard points mean you can only use gimbals effectively, so all that rules it out as a good combat ship.
It's a shame because I loved everything about flying it, how it sounds and how it looks inside and out. The Python addresses all of that sadly, it's so clichéd.

Not impressed with the Clipper in combat. There is no class 3 multi-cannon for the large hardpoints so I'm limited to cannon or frag cannon. Cannon fires slowly and misses all the time, and frag cannon hits more but needs reloading after 20 minutes. Killed things quicker and easier in my ASP. Might have to grind up to Python.I Loved the clipper but just upgraded to a python. The clipper is great on paper but just too compromised for me. The tiny fuel tank nearly killed me twice. Gz on dangerous btw
Large hard points are limited for choice, the best choice seems to be dual gimbal pulse, just like the Vulture, its such a shame.
The medium are much more interesting as the large pulse kill everything up to Cobra's and Vipers in seconds, you only need to outfit for larger ship killing advantage. Thinking of getting gimbal cannons for those close in subsystem shots.

Anyone else still playing this much? The appeal has diminished for me somewhat, been dipping in and out.
I did some exploring, and fitted out an Anaconda with the profits. Must admit to being pretty disappointed with the Anaconda, thought I could make it into a decent gunship to terrorise RES and conflict zones, but I've found that a Python is much better at this, so I've now got my Python fitted out for combat, the Anaconda as a trader and my Asp for exploring.
I've just hit some decent ranks in all 3 areas but I don't really fancy the grind much to make the final push on to Elite. I guess I'll see what Powerplay brings to see if it can rekindle my interest.

I bought this a while ago, even bought a Thrustmaster joystick to play it. However, due to work constraints I never really got to grips with it. No real in-game tutorials just left me guessing what to do, much like the X series of games.
So, the furthest I got was taking off, and that's it!

More there than you'll ever be able to read but it might be a start.
If you know anyone else who plays they can be a massive help. That's how I got started.
Failing that,

Loads of tutorial clips on there that might help.
I agree about the learning curve on this - it's near vertical. I've been mentoring a work colleague on getting started, it's brought it all back to me about how many of the game mechanics are not really described at all, even in the tutorials. Plus it's pretty brutal when you start just to try and get some credits together with every mistake costing you lots of game time.
I'm also quite unimpressed at how it appears you need to live on the FD forums in order to keep up with the game. I've become obliquely aware about the existence of these new artifacts but without reading through 1000 posts on the forums it's hard to just get a handle on what's going on, which means I'm not in a position to even decide about participating. Frontier really need to sort out their content release management, because they currently appear to rely on the forums.

That YouTube link is 40 minutes long - and that's just detailing the HUD cockpit display! After a days work, I have no more than that to play an actual game!
Perhaps it's just me, but shouldn't it be up the games developer to teach the end user how to get the most of the game, and not the end user searching for clues for hours on end on the internet?
All it needs is one or two structured training missions where it holds your hand through the various processes and procedures and bringing up on the screen what keyboard buttons to press etc.
