Thanks guys. When I said "get started" I really meant how do I even pick a power to pledge allegiance to, but I managed to work that out last night so I'm good to get started. I'm heading to the HQ now.

I guess if I'm allied with a relatively peaceful power then will that mean I don't really get merits for killing people associated with other powers? If I've picked someone in the Empire then will it matter if I kill folk associated with another Empire-related power?

ETA - I guess if I get seen killing someone in a rival system then I'll still potentially get in trouble with the law etc. too?
If they don't have a 'Wanted' status then yes, of course. A Kill Warrant scanner might not be a bad thing though.

What MissChief says is correct apart from when you are in a powerplay 'Control System' (You can see these in the map under the powerplay tab). In a control system all bets are off and you can attack any target described as 'Lawless' in the bottom left panel. No wanted, or any other record. 30 merits per kill, the most important tool is a Frame Shift Drive interdictor so you can pull over the enemies. Compare that merit yield to the trading method and it is far easier to get rating 5.

I am pledged to the 'Bubblegum Princess' which means all other Empire powers are off limits so that means Livigny-Duval, Torval and Patreus aligned. All Fed, Alliance and indies are fair game!

Quick tips
- Pick a rival's (including rival faction) control system under fortification. I picked Kokoimudji as is is close to a friendly control system (Kalana). look for the shield symbol.
- you are looking for ideally wings of easy ships like Sideys and Eagles. In my Python, anything is easy wink but I am still going for the easiest and quickest to kill targets, hence a full laser loadout. Haulers, Adders, type6, Sidey, Eagle even Cobra are a quick kill.
- If you get interdicted, boost and jump out unless it will be an easy fight for you.
- Learn to interdict yourself, it's the only way to quickly get the kills
- These kills count toward your combat rating

OK thanks guys, useful stuff there.

I've aligned with Aisling Duval and made it to Cubeo last night. Then got interdicted and vaporised, in fairly short order, by a "Utopia" something-or-other, and respawned about 8 jumps away so had to get back there. I can see a couple of missions from power contacts to take stuff to other places to help with the expansion preparations etc. I guess the more of the items I take the more merits I get? Do I have to visit more than one target system to distribute them or can I offload them all at once to one contact in a target system?

Also I read somewhere something about having to maintain your rating week to week - is that right, am I going to have to earn enough merits to keep my rating up? If so then that's likely to kill it for me, I don't get much free time to play games these days.

I guess by reading the in depth postings that this game is pretty immersive, broad of range and scope and therefore very enjoyable?

What are player's thoughts? Would you say this is a "hit"?

You have to have a certain kind of mindset, ie happy to set and accomplish things for yourself rather than being led through a story. I used to love the old Elite games for this exact reason but it isn't for everyone. As for gameplay I think it is very broad but there isn't a great deal of depth (although this is improving all the time). Treating it as a work in progress is probably a good idea.

The term I've used and put on the Elite Dangerous FB posts is 'All the depth of a puddle. Sure the Puddle is the size of the Pacific Ocean but it's still only 6 inches deep'.

There's a lot to do but it's not fleshed out very well. You can bounty hunt but not exactly make it a living and likely get blown to pieces several times. You can Mine but it's all a bit simple and actually not that lucrative unless you're doing it in a BIG way with a very big ship. You can play courier and you can make some money this way but it's all just a bit, well, lacking.

Wow, you're just so quotable. I've read that exact phrase before a few times, each of which was before you started playing.

I suspect some feel that with the scope of the game being so broad it's going to tell them the meaning of life and everything. It won't. It's just escapist fun. Needs work, but it's fun. A hit for me.

Late to the party I may be, but I downloaded and installed this yesterday and am really looking forward to getting into it.

I've only messed around in the training part as yet and all looks good.

Are there any good pieces of advice for a complete novice?

Get away from the starting solar systems asap - in fact get yourself over to Cauchini (a nice friendly independent system) . No noob hunters around.

I've got a little bit sloppy with my smuggling over the past few weeks as I grind my way towards being an Elite trader, and I've now got a 12,000,000 fine which will shortly become a bounty. I think this means that if anyone wants to head over to LFT 37 I will jump into a Sidewinder and a PH'er can destroy me - you get the bounty and I get a clean slate to carry on with my nefarious activities without any...Imperial interest. Any takers?

Philbo I'm heading over there now and if I can provide this service just let me know.
Nice to have an excuse to get out there again.

Edit: Now docked at Onnes. Gimme a shout.

Hi castex, I've sent you a friend request in-game. The current fine expires in 1 day and 16 hours (I did say "soon") before it becomes a bounty so there's a bit of hanging around to do I'm afraid. You (or anyone) is welcome to wing up on some of my trading runs to get a 5% wing bonus (I'm doing a 2M profit round trip every 11 minutes or so) over the next few days. (Or weeks in fact, as I'm going to be grinding this route for a while).

Fine offer! thanks but Castex was lucky enough to get to your message first, I'll leave it to him to decide if you are ok with that? Also, perhaps there are some players new to the game who could really do with a big cash injection to help them on their way? A few million would get them right into a well sorted Vulture! As said, I'll let you two decide.

If there's a few mil going free though it will get me back above my rebuy costs biggrin

Friend request accepted, Commander. thumbup

Happy to wait. Happy to wing up later on tonight if you're on.
I'm also more than happy to split the bounty with you Chuck - no problems.

Sounds good to me!

1 day 16 hours would be Thursday afternoon-ish?

Thursday evening is better for me - does that suit? Chuck, I've sent you a friend request as well. The fine will only be in one specific system so we'll have to fly there (not far from LFT 37) to do the deed. Bounty will now be over 15M!

Yep, Thursday evening is best for me to as I have a sick Boxster to go to the garage in the afternoon. Will log in later on and pic up that request, cheers Phil.

( I hope that's not fed or alliance space over at LFT 37? if so I could be toast haha)

It's independent space, so you should be OK. However, I've just read that there may be a max single system bounty that another player get from killing another player of 1 million credits, so it may not be worth your while(s).
