OK thanks. I got my arse handed to me the other night against a much more capable ship and the (admittedly modest) rebuy cost wiped out most of my (admittedly meagre) remaining funds. I think I'll go on for a bit tonight and look for some RES' around the area I'm in now.

Is it the case that a system with Extraction listed under the economy field, a planet or two with asteroid rings and a reasonably high population will be likely to have a RES or two?
It could be, interesting point, I'd never considered that. As you rightly say, I only ever look for systems with asteroid rings, pretty much guaranteed to find a res there.

Top tips:

Avoid Hazardous RES if you want to play it safe, there are no cops there to help you out when you get attacked.
Start with the smaller stuff but look for Elite/Deadly class NPC if you can, bigger bucks for higher rank.
It's worth making sure you have some shield cell banks to re charge your shields ( they won't work if you lose your shields) and some chaff to put off
gimballed/turreted weapons.
If you do find Anacondas and other 'large' hulls, hopefully the cops will make a start on them and you can finish them off for some really decent cash. IF it's going
pair shaped, you should be able to make a run for it, hopefully the cops will be keeping the target occupied for you to bail out and let things cool down.
Be careful about 'wings' of NPC, you might find a tasty little sidewinder that is in a wing with a Python/FDL/Anaconda, a bit of a look up close and you should be
able to tell.
Dump/Sell any cargo you have, you will be scanned left right and centre for cargo by the wanted pirates, if you are carrying anything they will open up on you right
away, I always go in with an empty hold ( I don't have any cargo space anyway so that helps) so I can pick my targets rather than they pick me! That won't stop some
ships opening up on you right away (FDLs have habit of doing that) but it's rare.

Apologies if this sounds like teaching to suck eggs, it's not and you already know all this, if not though, hopefully this will help you generate some cash.

Have fun!

Not at all, a couple of things I did know but some useful new info there. I hadn't really spent any time skanking about in RES's since the wings update came out and certainly not since the hazardous ones appeared so things have changed a bit. I'll have a look around tonight, thanks again.

Came back after a break to recover; gave CQC a go but I was underwhelmed by the experience and overwhelmed by the opposition! However, being rank 1 and flying against people with much better ships & weapons will make for very slow progress. Maybe it's a function of CQC not being very popular but being matched with far superior ships doesn't make the entry into CQC any easier. At least with traditional deathmatch games everyone starts equal.

I haven't played the game in nearly two months. I've written about it in forums more than I've played it.

It's good to take a break but then I come back and just launching from a station has me hooked again. It's all so seductive.

Sadly I think that's part of the problem too. Within a couple of hours it felt like I'd seen all there was to see. Did a RES, did some smuggling, did some bounty hunting, did a trade run, suffocated and died doing the trade run. Only thing I haven't done is some mining but that looks incredibly dull. Not looked at Powerplay yet though.

Congrats! It makes a great trader, much nicer to fly than a T9. Stick C3 pulse and C2 beams on all the hardpoints, and if you get interdicted when trading by an NPC just submit to the interdiction, deploy turrets and boom! I ran without shields because I just didn't need them...maybe different in 1.4 though, now that the NPCs are properly equipped.

I also used a docking computer - I was fine getting the thing through the slot but the computer was much faster than me at getting it onto a pad.

Although I do love the game and find it great escapism of an evening, I'm inclined to agree with this. I think it boils down to having a personal goal to work towards. My goal right now is to get to around 300M Cr total assets as this will allow me have a couple of decent ships (A rated Python and A rated Vulture most likely). I also think (hope) that the horizons update with planetary landing will spices things up too.

In addition I would like the game to be more like the title, ie Dangerous. I want to be properly scared every time I jump away from the safety of a station so some rebalancing of the risk/reward in the game would be good. The NPCs are getting a lot harder now which is a start though.

@Chuck238, thanks for the tips. I found a system with a selection of RES sites near where I've found A-rated modules for my ship so I've spent a little time the last couple of evenings earning some cash and combat ranking. I still have to be very careful selecting bigger targets (or letting them select me) but I can probably do about half a million in bounty in an hour's play so it shouldn't take long to get equipped to start taking on the bigger fish.

That driving looks like it could be a giggle. Wacky races?

Question for those with a few ships. I want to put both in the same place, I want to bring the Scout to the Python but I can't seem to find an option at the start, I'm guessing I can't choose which to start with, have I missed something? Am I going to have to buy a Sidewinder to move both ships then sell it? Ta in advance.

You will always start with the ship you last piloted.

Thanks for the tips Phil. You're right it's like a caterham after the T9. I'll be fitting at least the c4 cannon in the huge slot as I miss it from the FDL. Love that crACK when it hits something. Don't think I'll be flying without shields but I've been daring with a meagre 4A fitment.
Never not used a docking computer. I love the music and I need those few seconds downtime, dammit.

I haven't played it since I sold my DK2. There is no going back from that - it feels disconnected and half a game without it.

Roll on OR/Vive, so I can get back in the cockpit.

Hiya
Looking at spending out on this game, this thread seems to show its good, so, overall, is it a good investment to a player who can play long haul games?

Cheers.

I've been playing on and off since it came out yonks ago. Mostly on. There's a big development on the way at Christmas so you might wish to wait for that in order to avoid paying twice. Anyway, it's a keeper.

I haven't played since June (started in Alpha launch) and I am not looking forward to coming in as alot has changed in game play and terrifed in crashing on take off as my craft is full decked out Imperial Clipper with not much change in bank!

My 2 pennies worth is as the learning curve is v high in the beginning I would play now but dont over do it and burn out, dip in and out and not long till xmas!

Crashing on take off is sidestepped by logging out and then straight back in on launch, Baron. Yes it does rather imperil one's suspension of disbelief but it is expedient in that you come back to a ship that's there in space ready to jump. Useful for trade grinding and for getting used to a precious ship's handling without fear of being fined or shot to bits in 5-4-3-2-oh st, etc.

OK so having been grinding credits in a couple of HRES sites the past few nights I've started to build money up with the intention of A-rating my Cobra Mk.III. I got an A-rated shield generator last night so I should be able to take on the bigger stuff a bit more safely.

Then it dawned on me; should I maybe forget the Cobra and just build cash up for something a bit better? Vulture or Diamondback Explorer both have some large weapons hardpoints and don't seem to cost the earth...
