Thanks for the tips, have done the tutorials and will definitely print out the keymap as there are a LOT of keys! I'll also have a go at assigning some of the important stuff to the mouse, it has about 12 buttons on it so should do. I'll persevere with M+K for now and see how I get on. I am tempted by a proper joystick but will some of the joysticks I've seen would definitely get ridicule from the OH, she already thinks I'm a big kid who spends far too much time playing games. God knows what she'll think when I pick up an Occulus Rift and full on hotas joystick. smile

I've played previous Elites so I know the basic principles of trading but thanks for the Rare maps. Right now I just want to get out there and shoot some stuff but no doubt I'll soon find my current ship inadequate and will need money for new ships and upgrades. Oh and the game looks very pretty.

seems pretty smooth though.
After a second play I found that the fame rate on planets was actually a bit choppy especially around settlements.

Turning down graphics settings has fixed it though, Will start turning stuff back up later and see what the problem was.

Spent half an hour setting up the controls for the buggy, Got my wheel and pedals working, some of the controls were reversed for some reason....

I just can't get into playing betas though, I can't sustain the interest like I can when playing my "real" game. Some bug tester I turned out to be....

Back to fallout 4 for now....

Visiting a nav point (not compromised) or resource extraction sites (avoid hazardous) are the best place to start as these usually have police patrols and are relatively safe if you pick your targets carefully or even interdicting lone wanted ships (you'll need a frame drive interdictor module) in supercruise.

The golden rule though is to never leave dock without enough credits to cover insurance (shown in the cockpit right panel) as the game has a nasty habit of biting you when you least expect it and when you're in a bigger ship it could put you right back to square one if you can't afford a rebuy on your current ship, all you'll have to go back to is the starting Sidewinder with what credits you have left.

If you're going to be mostly doing combat the Viper Mk III or Imperial Courier (needs a high enough rank in the Empire) are good ships to aim for and then the Vulture later on, if you have rank with the Federation or Empire this gives you more ship choices as well.

These two sites are good for experimenting with ship setup, plus they'll tell you stuff like the cost, powerplant demand and insurance as you add better modules to a ship.

I think I may wait for the VR products to hit for maximum nerdage impact and ridicule from the OH. This will be me in the not too distant future

I picked this up in the Steam sale for a tenner (would have been rude not to). Any tips for a complete beginner? I don't have a joystick so struggling to learn all the key mappings at the moment but I have just picked up a gaming mouse so should be able to map some of the functions to the buttons on that. Am I going to be able to play this properly with just mouse and keyboard?

I've played previous Elite's but the learning curve on this looks pretty steep so any tips for noobs greatly appreciated.

I use an XBox 360 game pad, it works really well. I only have to use keys for a couple of things, I've got all the things I need handy mapped to the control pad. Just a suggestion.

So I've enjoyed the Vulture but feeling the need for moar powar now, specifically firepower. Considering the Fed Assault Ship, on the basis that I could have 2x beams on the large hardpoints and 2x multicannons or similar.

Question is, will this be better than the vulture, in that will I be able to take down targets in a HazRES more quickly, earn bounty faster etc. than the Vulture, or am I just as well to keep grinding with the Vulture until I can afford something much bigger/more powerful like a FdL or Python?

I'd look at a Clipper instead of an Assault Ship. IIRC the Clipper is more maneuverable - but I would have a read up on that. Certainly that size (FAS/Clipper) seems a natural progression from the Vulture. How much cash do you have and what do you want to do, Hazrez or PVP? biggrin Thing is, stretching to a Python/FDL is all well and good but to kit those out to any decent speck is going to need another 50% minimum on the basic price. My Python cost circa 56mil but I've spent over 200mil more on it. It starts to get very expensive now.

Anyone on Horizons Beta? Pal has downloaded it. Initial thoughts are positive. He also warned me not to try a dog fight in a canyon. FDL's are not THAT maneuverable!

Clipper is faster, and has better shields than the FAS for the same cost (about 50m for the FAS kitted out). You can also stick a 7A shield onto a Clipper is you want to max it out, and you have the extra 50m spare!

Erm, not according to the ship comparison site, the FAS has maneuverability of 6, the Clipper only has 2...

The Clipper has slightly better shields but half the armour too. You may be thinking of the Imperial Courier, maneuverability of 7, but nowhere near the shields, weapons or armour of the FAS.

I would love to try a wing, although it seems there are still issues with instancing and connections. I have a very fast line and high quality router.

I made it to Lieutenant with the Feds. Hoping that's going to be enough for one of these:

Somehow, I doubt it will.

Does anybody have any hints & tips about levelling up in either Federation or Imperial ranks please?

High RES farming has allowed me to build an A spec Vulture and plenty of insurance credits, so want to try something else.

Ratty I've found that progression with either Feds or Imps can be achieved fairly expediently by performing easy missions for factions bearing the symbol (star or wings, respectively) on the bulletin board. The missions will get slightly harder and more of them will appear once you've done a couple.
Then you can stack them (log out, log back in and recheck in open / solo / private) and do them all in one trip while keeping an eye on expiry times. Don't try to do both fed and imp at once.
Doing this is not quite a laugh a minute; it feels like a bit of a cheat and it probably won't be possible for much longer.

I had a look on that site but couldn't quite work it out - is that some sort of dedicated server or something?

Thanks castex, appreciate the quick reply.

Luckily I possess enough self-control not to cheat the three game instances. Games like this are about achievement, not instant gratification. Probably.

Another question if I may please. Is a Vulture a good ship for the Federal / Imperial missions, or should I look to something with a greater cargo capacity if cargo running form a significant number of the contracts?

If I was concerned about my in-game behaviour (outside any human interaction), I wouldn't have spent ages ferrying slaves about and I wouldn't also be logging out just to get my massive ship out of the door without ruining it.

Oh and while I'd hang onto your Vulture if you can, the Asp is a much more suitable ship for smuggling and whatnot.
