Is there a 64-bit version of the game client for non-Horizons peeps?
Yes, the non-Horizons game is now Elite: Dangerous 1.5 and comes in 32bit and 64bit versions. Horizons (2.0) is 64bit only.Only had a quick look on Horizons last night, tried a planetary landing. What's the top tip for this? I descended so far and the ship went into "Glide" mode, but after a while said Glide Aborted and left me in manual flight about 140km from the place I was trying to reach.
Found out the hard way that the place in question wasn't a star port, when I approached, got a message about trespassing, sanctions then a face full of laser fire. Will spend a bit more time on it this evening hopefully.
Hmmm this new update has changed things a bit. My Pythons load out that I was very happy with is going to need a bit of a re think. 180% heat for popping off one class 6 shield cell bank - wtf!?
On the plus side, my FDL is like a new ship, much more maneuverable, less heat issues and more power for running weapons and shields. I think this ship is going to be the De Facto ship for PvP. Could be quite interesting.
One look at the FD forums and seeing 20+ pages of bugs has put me off Horizons for a while.

I've just played it, it slaughters my framerates.
Have a play with the graphics settings, I turned a load of stuff off when I was having issues in beta and got a huge boost, still not sure what was slowing me down though, turned a lot of it back on now.Smooth as silk now
Well I've given this another punt now that Horizons is out, after a complete layoff for a few months.
Installed 2.0...and it's as if FD have learned nothing about approachability in the last year. I couldn't see the point of planetary landings and there was precious little information to tell me why I should bother. Drove around for a bit, lost my ship, got my scarab blown up for shizzles then found that my ship had put itself back into orbit for some reason. OK, give up on landings, let's try the new big ships. I'm short 1 rank for both Fed & Imperial to get the Corvette/Cutter so let's rank up. Good - there's a progress bar. Bad - the missions are broken. 4 hours later and a trawl of the FD forums and Reddit I find that a wide variety of new missions simply don't work. Great.
Let's try the long range smuggling missions. Head off to Robigo, pick up about 30 million credit's worth of missions. Head off - make a couple of jumps to find that for some reason my destination route has been lost. Apparently that's another bug. So into the map to find & select my destination again, to have a message on the Comm panel, the police are checking for illicit cargo. Literally 2 seconds later I've been interdicted with zero chance of avoidance, I get scanned and boom all the missions are fails. All because the route planner lost my destination.
Sorry FD, but it's going to be a while before I even think about playing this again.

It's up and down with me, Up just now as I'm getting close to an Elite rank and have just bought an Anaconda.
PvP keeps me entertained, find an enemy system and get stuck in.
If anyone fancies a scrap, you'll often find me in Rhea. 7 vs 4 the last time ( we were the 4 and lost, badly lol). Lost 11 million in re buy.

Finally got this a while back. Played Elite:Frontier endlessly on Amiga and needed to get a pc capable of playing Dangerous.
Really not disappointed (well maybe a bit with having to buy horizons to get planetary landings)
Currently have a nice Viper MKIII with the pirate paint and a good set up for combat.

I do sometimes think they need to diversify the ships a bit more. They need the haulers and then the jack of all trades with limitations in some way, like if you want to load up with good weapons then you have to sacrifice cargo space or jump range then the full on combat capable ships with next to no cargo space but ace weapons and shields etc. it feels like once you get into something like an Anaconda that you can do just about everything. Huge shield capacity, great weapons and still loads of cargo space. I know they're expensive to own and can be to run too, but once you have one there's little else you need to buy.
Been trying out some of the new ships. The Cutter is a complete brick of a thing, even with the best thrusters once you get it moving, it just keeps on going! First time out I boosted towards a station from about 5km out...smeared myself over the station. 11M rebuy and 11M cargo lost...ouch! Once you get the hang of it it's not too bad as a trader. It's actually OK as a smuggler as well, though you need to line yourself up a long way from the station.
The FdL is a lot better now than it was, but I still find a Python has better survivability in a HazRes.
Finally the Corvette is...interesting. If you can get the plasma pair to bear on a target then it can do some serious damage, but heat management is an issue. Might be best paired with some of the fancy shield disruptor lasers to strip shields and then smack the hull with the plasmas. Need to spend some more time in this to see if it will become a favourite.
Ship AI much better now. Federal Assault Ships are my nemesis in HazRes, haven't got a bead on them yet.

I got the £10 version just before Christmas, and just starting to get into it. Done a few transport missions, made a few bucks from killing interdiction attacks, so have about 50K in the bank. Making about 1K on a typical buy/sell run, which is peanuts really. I think I made more in 1 kill than I have in my entire trading. Not entirely what to do next to be honest! I would be tempted to go around killing attackers, but I suspect this would boost my reputation and then more heavily armed pirates will start attacking me, which would leave me stuffed really!
I have the starter ship (well, the 5th replacement or so) and I run in solo mode rather than multiplayer. No idea if this makes any difference. My only upgrade so far is the power distributor (from an E to a C) which seems to give laser regen and engines a bit more oomph. I only did this because I vaguely remembered seeing a video that recommended it.
Any pointers? I could do with a flight stick really, but reluctant to spend much on a game that I don't know how much I will play.

Hi Zad, welcome to the game. It's pretty Marmite; it will either grab you by the balls or leave you completely cold.Your experience is pretty standard; it can take a while to slowly accumulate the credits to get somewhere. Refitting your Sidey for purpose is key; if you want to trade then maximise your cargo capacity. First thing is to try to upgrade your FSD because with a decent jump range you can start trading rares or taking delivery missions which are usually faster ways to get credits than trading (initially).
Open vs Solo is a matter of personal taste. From the forums it seems that as a starter in Open you will be easy prey for gankers. I personally wasn't prepared to lose 10+ hours of game time (represented in my ship rebuy or cargo value) to play in Open originally, but some like the frisson of risk. I played in Solo until I had a mid range ship then I played in Open after that. Once you get out of the starter systems you rarely meet baddies unless you go looking for them in the honey pot areas for PvP.
In terms of hardware, I got to triple Elite on just a mouse & keyboard, so they're definitely not necessary. They probably add something to the experience, and a good stick will make some manoeuvring easier (e.g. lateral thrusters). A HOTAS setup is probably compulsory if you want to be a good PvP player, but then if you want to be a REALLY top PvPer then you'll need multi screens, VR, VoiceAttack, TeamSpeak etc.
If you want some help out there then let me know and I'll wing up - for example, if you wing up on a trade run then you get some really big credits just for the trip (10% of the trade done - in a Cutter with 784t capacity, that can be a lot - just under Cr3M for a 10-minute loop at the moment).
Thanks for the advice! I'll take your upgrade advice, run a couple of delivery missions today and I can see a longer jump drive can make things a lot easier. I will definitely stay solo mode for now I think! I have WoW for all my PvP needs, and I really don't think I'm anywhere near ready for it in E. I played it back in the original 8-bit days, so I will see how it goes!
