I went out to Merope to have a look, and also try out planetary landing, which I haven't attempted since Horizons launched.

Truth be told, once you've had mosey round the site there's not much to it aside from a rather curious C-shaped glyph marking on the side - which various players on the Frontier Forum are trying to interpret, believing it to be a clue as to their origin. I collected some synthesis materials and also some meta-alloys which I sold at Obsidian Orbital for a couple of hundred thousand credits, before heading off to find an Unknown Artefact, which is the other big in-game mystery at the moment, possibly connected to the Barnacles.

There's a huge thread on the Frontier Forums here discussing the Barnacles and UAs. According to a developer who occasionally contributes to the discussion, there are fixed (i.e. manually placed) barnacle sites but also randomly-generated ones placed by the background simulation in nebulae.

There is a bug affecting some players which causes the Merope Barnacle to disappear or not show up at all, but apparently logging out and back in again as necessary will make them show up. The devs are aware and investigating.

Cool, thanks for that. Was it busy with other players when you went out there?

It's a bit difficult for me to say, as when I visited I was on private group servers rather than open play.

I was initially on the Mobius server, and there was only one other player in my instance. I parked my SRV up for the night on the surface and when I logged back in used the Cannon servers - and was on my own!

Logged in last weekend to get back to populated space (after not being on for a couple of months) - spent a wad on a viper Mk4 for a bit of combat and got hammered in the rings of one of the planets out in Caucini. So that was 400k wasted (plus losing 200k in combat bonds).
Going to slink off in my asp and do a bit of trading and pirate baiting....

Trading tip:

EGM 823 (Cabral Terminal) Gold ? Picaurukan (Aristotle Terminal) Imperial Slaves ? EGM 823 (Cabral Terminal)

Systems are only 15ly away from each other so reachable in a direct jump in most trader configurations. Both stations are really close to the jump in point so virtually no time in supercruise.

Should get around 3300/t on a loop which should take less than 8 mins. Both commodities are completely legal so no smuggling issues, no fines, no angry feds. In my cutter with 784t capacity I'm doing Cr18M+/hr.

Goes some way to make up for getting my Corvette blown to bits by a Ramaconda.
Seems to be down to 2700cr per loop now.

Apurui sell
crop harvesters - 524cr profit.
personal weapons - 601cr profit.

Hun nongga
Barlowe terminal sell
Imperial slaves - 2876cr profit.

Is best I can find for my self just now. Barlowe is a hike though from jump point.

I am back into ED (pre-purchased Horizons last year) but I hadn't played ED for probably a year and then not much. I had an email from ED saying because I had between only 3-18hrs only there was a Viper mkIV waiting for me at Gunnovale. So I thought Ok, I had an Adder and 50k credits. Jumped twice to Gunnovale, stripped out the Adder sold it, sold the Viper and bought a Cobra MkIII, started kitting it out. And after finding a 3000/t Imperial Salves trade route only 10ly and 1 jump apart started trading again. I now have a very nicely kitted out Cobra and 700,000 credits after maybe only another 6-7 hrs play. Oh and I discovered the mail screen Karl & Nick (it's defaulted to text in the options, so I turned that off) and saw your messages. One thing I have noticed is just how busy some starports are now, I am playing in Solo at the moment but my new home starport regularly has 4 or 5 ships docking at the same time as me, or leaving. I am already thinking about upgrading, the Cobra MkIV would be ok if it wasn't so slow, so I think I'll go to either the Type 6 or wait put more time in the mkIII and go straight to an Asp Explorer which I do intend to have eventually.

I made a big mistake with the Cobra Mklll.

I desperately wanted one because I'm an original 84 player and had the nostalgia crave, I traded for months to get it fully loaded thinking I would go out into the galaxy and take everybody on, spent about 28 million kitting it out. What I forgot was that I'm crap at combat, so I was getting mullered by every worthless interdictor I took on. I enjoyed it for smuggling but it dawned on me that my only survival tactic was to run for my life so who needs all that expensive bling?

I traded it over for a very serious, sharp toothed Vulture, now there's a ship you can hurt people with even if you can't fight for toffee!
I eventually paired the Vulture with a lovely Asp Explorer just built for rares trading with no weapons as I'm only going to run away anyway. Between the two of them I'm having lots of fun. The added bonus is that the Explorer can be quickly refitted for heading out to the deep, which is what I'm contemplating next.

The Vulture is very effective, I didn't really grasp just how effective until I "upgraded" to a Fer de Lance. I knew the Vulture could eat FdLs for breakfast as I used to do that in Haz RES sites against NPCs but I thought that in the hands of even a modestly-skilled combat pilot such as myself a FdL would be unstoppable.

Wrong. I just can't get on with it at all. It's far less maneuverable, which I'd expected, but just not that much, even with A-rated thrusters. The weapons totally don't make up for that either. There's nothing really effective for the huge hardpoint and the 4x mediums with pulse lasers are only slightly more effective than 2x large pulses on the Vulture.

I've played the game maybe ten times since I switched to the FdL and each time I log off saying I'm changing ship next time. Tempted to try a Python and see if I can get a better weapons config, or rank up with the Federation and try a FAS. Either that, or chop the thing in for a couple of smaller ships to play with as the mood takes me.

I have just today bought the FAS. not as manuverable(still has standard thrusters need more money) but took to haz res and took out an eagle in half the time as the vulture and a drop ship in similar time. More due to me than the ship.

I went from a Vulture to a Python because I wanted to do more than just fight. It can hold its own in a Hazres but is nowhere near as manoevrable and although it packs a punch it is such a bloody massive target you will take a lot of damage. I'm mainly using mine as an armoured, quick trader at the moment. I'll probably give mining a go at some point or fire up the Asp and go off exploring again.

Just got this through Steam using some vouchers. Should have bought it earlier though as have to wait for the 13gb download now. Bah!

Last Elite game I played was Frontier - Elite 2 in the 90's.

Really enjoying this. Playing on iMac and glad you can play with PC players. I have been bounty hunting in a cobra with circa 2 million on outfitting and doing ok, changed to a viper mkIII as apparently hard point locations are much better but it didn't feel much different so wanted a better ship.

A few hours of rare trading in a type 6 got me around 12 million and now have a Vulture with class 3 beam lasers. What a jump up! Makes short work of most things!

Now need to figure the best way to get to an Anaconda?! Probably going to try and make enough bounty hunting to get a type 9 heavy and do some volume trading!

Finally got this downloaded and spent about half an hour on it last night.

What the hell am i supposed to do?

I did a few training missions then went into the proper game. I'm sat on a station dock, but don't know where to start. I guess I need to pick up some missions to start making some cash? Or could I just go exploring and find things.

I think I need to read up on how to travel as I only seem to be able to use the throttle at the moment. Haven't even looked at the next two levels of travel (light speed and hyper space).

There is a docking and hyperspace with plotting route training mission. Try those first.

Download the manual if you haven't already so you can see the various screens and the info tags for the icons on screen.

As for trading and knowing where to go I use these:

Route Planner - http://ed-td.space/en/24/Route+planner
Also has other features and extra options on the tools menu.

Finding trades - http://www.elitetradingtool.co.uk/
Go to trade calculator enter your system and dock leave target blank, set other options like cargo and cash and click calculate.

Or this one too, check market - http://inara.cz/market

For checking ships costs, outfitting costs, and your own load out for energy usage, change in jump distance with more weight.
http://coriolis.io/

I have them open on my phone or tablet for quick easy access.

Long distance trading from one of these stations/systems
Watson beacon
Obsidian Orbital
Paradiso
Fabian Enterprise
Cremona Arsenal
Beaufoy Works
Loncke Keep
Rangarajan's Base
Millerport
Jeffries High
Dahm Exchange
Darnielle's Progress
Tevis Terminal
James K Winston
Thornycroft Terminal....

Dependant on rank\status with faction can get very lucrative if you dont mind doung shadow deliveries. I worked up to my ASP explorer doing short stuff and rare trading then in a short time got enough for a vulture(A rated) went bounty hunting for a while then in a couple days went and got enough for a A rated FAS to replace the vulture.

When I get bored of that will work for rank to get a corvette and cash to out fit it. But plan on doing a bit of long distance exploring in the asp first.

I bought this in beta with the lifetime expansion pack. I played for 10-20 hours in beta and then because of various reasons have only just gone back to pick it up again.

I must admit I am struggling a bit to get into it. I am using free Viper mkIV, I seem to have been given 2 of these and an eagle so I've sold the spares and have about 700k. I've been doing a bit of trading, bit of exploring...but I don;t think there's one hook that's really grabbed me yet and I think I could do with some advice on what to do next!

I've made my way to Sol....where should I be aiming to go next? Should I keep the viper or trade it in for something else? I don't mind doing some trading but I think it's going to get old pretty quickly so I guess I may need to start investing in improving my ship to do some combat....at the moment I get my arse handed to me by everyone!

Resource Extraction Site bounty hunting? - https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=132...

That is what I will be having a go at next.

I'm still with a Cobra MkIII (sold the Viper IV) but I have upgraded the FSD, power plant, boosters and shield, I have 44T of cargo storage and am doing a 130k profit Imperial slave run to get more credits. I have 2E pulse and 1G multicannons but not fired them once yet. If I get interdicted I either just stay in the corridor and it fails or if I submit I just boost away and put distance between me and them before supercrusing onto my destination again.

This is my current loadout, which is dependent on what's been available to purchse in the systems I am in. Together with that I have 1.5m credits.

I'm not at it all the time, only 1hr a time and not every night.

Just ventured out for the first time. Found a beacon and got into a little fight with an npc ship. Blew it up, got a 6k bounty, then promptly got killed by a player.

Seem to have lost the bounty.

Arse.
