Jumped back on this over the weekend and headed out to explore again as everything else is just so boring in this.

I would happily trade for money if there was a live economy but it feels like you are just selling or buying for the sake of it. If it was lined to the power play then that would be better ie factions needing equipment or smuggling data etc.

Combat feels the same but AI just a bit better ships still feel very sluggish. I also dislike how everything is £££ want this decal then thats £££ want some visual upgrades then £££ for a game lacking content to actually spend your credits on adding stuff as micro transactions is a rather naff.

Bought this for Xbox one last week. Was very odd at first using the controller rather than joystick but the controls are spot on. Much easier to just pick up and play too smile

I had done a bit of trading to build my credits. Pledged allegiance to the Mother of Dragons....I mean Aisling Duval, and currently exploring the Lagoon Nebula. I'm surprised at how happy I am just exploring, the visuals are stunning smile

If anyone fancies trying something a little different in-game, how about joining in the effort to solve the mystery of the Unknown Artifacts and Unknown Probes?

There are some apparently linked mysteries that people are investigating at the moment - Unknown Artefacts (UAs), Unknown Probes (UPs) and Organic Structures, commonly referred to as "Barnacles".

In short:

  • UAs are found either in convoys run by the major powers, or in a 'shell' surrounding Merope at a distance of 135-150ly;
  • when floating in space, UAs always point towards the centre of the Merope star;
  • if floating in space inside the Merope system, they produce a crude wireframe image of your ship, transmitted using morse code;
  • if released from an SRV, they transmit the name of the planet in morse;
  • UAs degrade your ship modules when carried; when sold to stations in sufficient quantities they cause shutdowns due to technical difficulties;
  • Stations shut down in this way can be repaired by selling Meta Alloys in their commodity market;
  • Meta Alloys are 'farmed' from Barnacles by shooting the surrounding spires and collecting the resulting pods with an SRV;
  • large green 'flowers' yield Meta Alloys, the smaller pods yield random crafting minerals;
  • Barnacles are found only in nebulae, and seem to be entirely unresponsive to players, or interactions with UAs or UPs;
  • UPs have so far only been found in convoys, and these are exceedingly rare;
  • When floating in space, UPs always point to the centre of the planet Merope 5C;
  • When 'honked' with a Discovery Scanner, UP's shut down the player's ship and transmit a noise which decodes into the image shown in the BBC report;
  • In their most recent newsletter, Frontier described UPs in this way: "...no definitive answers have been found, but some are speculating this is a key of some sort..." with the words 'a key' highlighted in green (something they have never previously done, to my recollection);

At the moment, efforts are concentrated on finding 'free floating' UPs in the hope that they will produce a clearer or different spectrogram image; alternatively finding UP convoys so that further experiments can be conducted. Of course, there is also interpretation/cleaning up the spectrogram image.

The best source of information on these topics is the huge thread I linked to on the Frontier Forums - the first page contains more detailed and regularly-updated summaries of progress made so far in relation to UAs, UPs and Barnacles.

Logged in and played for a little while last night. Was in my Asp about 400ly from the bubble when I last played, decided to earn some money to have a reserve for rebuys before picking up my FAS and finding interesting stuff to do, so flew out to 17 Draconis, where I used to get some long-range smuggling missions from (quieter/less hassle then Robigo IME).

No such missions there now frown Have long-range smuggling missions been nerfed in general or just from some places? Do they still come up anywhere else?

I have started playing a bit again. I'm still crap, but have a Viper mkIII that can at least run away a bit.

Quite enjoying just plodding about to be honest.

Jeez am I out of practice - just lost 2M by having my Asp explorer taken out by NPCs... never happened before - took my 5A shields out in seconds and I didn't even have a chance to run.
Having to drop back into something a little tougher - Viper MKIV though need to find a 4A power plant....

I am dying for a reason to get back into Elite but I always end up bored. Maybe I'll pop back in and see what's happening.

Also, are the NPCs really that badass now? I used to just farm the st out of HazRes zones in my gee'd up Vulture. Now I'm not so sure I want to!

Yes!

You ought to be ok in a decent Vulture 1v1 but now I'd be careful about taking on a large wing.

I've left the res with with little not a lot of hull left. That's in a ship with 7B shield gen, 3 shield boosters, 3 hull reinforcements, 3 x 6A shield cell banks, 2 x 4A, 3 heat sinks, 2 chaff.......

Bought Horizons to try something different. Now on the hunt for stuff to buy a 'Dirty Drive'. Aftermarket tuning anyone? biggrin

Edit: Horizons not Wings...

Ooops..

HORIZONS!

The add on for landings.

There's a whole new world of the engineers, kind of like aftermarket tuning for all your ships systems/weapons. My mate did the missions for a 'dirty drive' and it increased his boost speed to over 525. He's now working on getting some kind of advanced torpedo that strips even the hardest shields.

Is Horizon's worth picking up then? I've only just started playing again after a long hiatus and most of the local systems are all exploited already.
