Elite: Dangerous

I picked up Elite Dangerous a while back on the XBO (used to love playing Frontier on my Amiga 500!) on thing I am struggling with is speeding up and slowing down. I enter a system, and want to make my way to a station, I speed up, get close to the target and then try and slow down and it wont let me. I essentially spend my time pin balling past my target at speed without any chance of reaching it - until I rage quit.
Can anyone tell me what am I doing wrong? Is there a space handbrake or something that I can yank on once I get close to my target.
When first starting off you need to start slowing down a long time before you reach your destination. The blue indicator is a good guide but not 100% for a beginner as the speed up\slow down has a bit of a delay due to the fact that you are travelling so fast. As you practice you'll get better and better at working out when you need to start slowing down and your journey time will get less. Eventually you'll be able to come out of super-cruise bang on the money within visual range of a station and can be inside and docked within about 30 seconds. It doesn't take too long to get the hang of it, I've not played ED much but can do this bit quite well now.
Been a while since anyone posted here so how about this for a development. For those who played the original ED you will remember the Thargoids. Them you really wanted to avoid.
Lots of talk over that last few years about when they will return.
Looks like that have

I picked this up just before Christmas and have only dabbled so far. I'm using the Vive and a HOTAS so, the immersion is amazing but, setting up the various controls is proving tricky to say the least!!
Those thargoids look interesting but, in all honesty, everything I encounter in ED at the moment looks pretty alien to me!
Any tips for a total beginner would be much appreciated

Have a look at HCS Voice Packs, for Voice Attack. Talk to your ship, it talks back and you can do pretty much anything voa voice command. Takes some setting up but once it's working it removes the need for a keyboard and the immersion gets even deeper. Those thargoids look interesting but, in all honesty, everything I encounter in ED at the moment looks pretty alien to me!

I've already got the VA demo which I was planning to try this weekend (demo is limited to 20 commands I think). As long as it works well with the Vive mic, which can be a bit hit and miss, I'll pick up a voicepack......did someone say Scarlett Johansson is an option?? https://www.hcsvoicepacks.com

Okay so, the Vive mic works fine so I purchased Voice attack and (ahem) 'found' a copy of the HCS Astra voicepack, all imported succesfully. However, it seems to be an older version as there is no bind file for the TM HOTAS X, only the Warthog.
Does anyone have a copy of the bind file they could send me?
I think I could probably set up the HOTAS commands manually but, it looks as though it would be a real PITA...

Decide what aspect is the most interesting for you in the game and go for it. Don't rush things, kick back and enjoy. Those thargoids look interesting but, in all honesty, everything I encounter in ED at the moment looks pretty alien to me!

I for one find exploration the thing for me, I'm out in the void again since mid October or so, been twice at Beagle Point and somehow I'm not bored. CMDR Mr Crown Vic p71 (PH proof name ) if anyone wants to friend me in game. Mostly flying in PG Fleetcomm.
I have been pinging between systems delivering data in the stock craft and I have made around 160k in credits.
I was just wondering - is it worth me upgrading my ship or just junking it for something better? Any recommendations of what to buy within reasonable reach or the sort of upgrades I could do to the base craft.
