Elite: Dangerous
Discussion
Star citizen is coming with a single player storyline called squadron 42, which you can either skip and go straight to multiplayer, or play through and then enter multiplayer as a veteran, presumably with some rewards.
Elite is just a big open world sandbox but there will be events going on to make a story of sorts, it's just that you won't be at the centre of it.
They should both have plenty to explore.
Elite is a genuine excuse to buy a flight stick, but the current star citizen build is easier with the mouse in my experience (I haven't played it much, since the current build is little more than an arena shooter and all the space exploration stuff isn't in yet)
Currently I'd recommend elite out of the two, as it's much closer to a complete game, star citizen shows promise, but it looks years away to be honest.

Not so much a fan of space stuff normally but been playing this using my trackIr and bought a Saitek stick and throttle.
Think it's fantastic the way the menus are contextual based on where you're looking and it feels really good to play. Really can't wait to try something like this with a proper vr when they come about. Seems like it will be hugely impressive the way you're immersed into it.

100% ship based at the moment, future plans include explorable stations with skill/interaction based commodity trading, planetary landings and resource harvesting, if they pull this off they can keep adding layers of interactivity.
Just killed my first NPC, that was hard work, getting to grips with the flight model is a steep learning curve, not got my stick setup sorted yet, but it'll be rewarding once it's done, a new skill to learn is always good.

Server is off and Beta 3 patch update http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=5228...
Looks good I am sure few updates will be needed on beta 3 for small fix on such a big patch!

Only read a little but think that it's based on procedural generation of certain things seeded using data about what we know of locations of real stars and as I understand it does stuff with classes of stars, knows where planets are thought to be etc.So it's really you're flying about a version, and I imagine often very accurate one, of our own galaxy. So if you identify a star in the sky, you should in theory be able to visit that in Elite. When you do, you also should find that it's the same class of star, and based on that has the correct colour and characteristics.
Well its got trading, bounties, war zones, missions, mining, fuel scooping, exploration. The galaxy size is being slowly increased with each release. Its currently massively massive, 2400 systems.
It all seems to work as intended, without major hiccups at least.

Yes.
As I've said before, playing E:D on the Rift is easily one of the greatest experiences I've ever had in 20+ years of gaming.
Sounds melodramatic, but I can never go back to playing it on monitor. It's like going back to 8-bit games.
Yes here too. The difference between monitor and Rift is almost like 2 different games, the feeling of space inside your cockpit is amazing, dog fighting is literally StarWars. As I've said before, playing E:D on the Rift is easily one of the greatest experiences I've ever had in 20+ years of gaming.

i5-3470, 16gb ram, GTX 560 Ti.Beta 3 seems to run a lot better on Rift (particularly with the directHMD support from the new OR driver) so I run at max detail without much problem apart from station interiors. I had to switch to lowest detail for Beta 2 to get similar framerates.
What HOTAS are you thinking of getting? I have a X52 which I'm fairly happy with, but wish I spent a bit more for the Pro as the main trigger button is a bit cheap and flimsy feeling.
Oculus Rift is definitely a must for me. Just like Elite I will wait for finished product but I think in Star Citizen it will be truely epic when it eventually comes out.
I fear though If I go with the full setup and get myself some decent headphones I will literally sh*t myself everytime the cat jumps on me or someone taps my shoulder.

Running an i5 2500k @ 4.5ghz, 8gb RAM and a GTX 570 and I can't run it on anything more than minimum all round without getting judder. Even then, it's not perfect in stations. If anyone else is considering an OR - wait until the consumer release. It's about 6-9 months away, and it'll be a much better product. Just remember, you'll need a beefy spec to utilise it!

Is it possible to play with Rift for extended periods without suffering any after effects ...
Cockpit based games (Elite, Live for Speed, etc) I don't have a problem with. Other games give me VR sickness after more than about 15 minutes, and it takes a long time to pass. The main issue for me is eye strain, as some of the text in game can be difficult to read with the SDE (screen door effect). I'd expect this to be massively improved once it's officially released.

I decided to skip half the tutorials and just dive in, was getting on very nicely, ran a few missions, traded my way up to 40k or so credits, then bam player interdiction! Message flashhing in the top of the screen asking for voice comms, I'm trying to follow the escape vector, frantically pressing buttons to toggle voice comms when he starts shooting, I must have been such an easy kill
