Just found that at Vonarburg Co-operative where you get dropped into the Beta all the ships are available (including the Chieftain) and they are all unlocked so you can also try Navy ranked ships you don't currently have access to. So I just tried the Imperial Cutter, similar to the Anaconda in that it handles likes a oil supertanker that's got a broken rudder. So I think I won't bother with any more Imperial ranking for now and stay with the Corvette as my big ship.

Can anyone tell me how I can map routes across long distances? I recently tried plotting a new route to where a CG was happening and the game was having none of it. It was admittedly a long distance, but surely this shouldn't make an difference?

I don't think it allows long distances to be done in one go, as there can be too many route variables. So create a waypoint every 1000 ly, it's more manageable.

Like this, Shinrarta Dezhra to Colonia - https://www.edsm.net/en/map/planner/index/endSyste...

24x 1000 ly sections and a final 300.

Ah ok. The issue I have had in the past is that I have tried to navigate my way there in stages and end up at a dead end and have to jump back through a bunch of systems and then head off in another direction hoping that it leads to where I want to go only to find another dead end.

Edit* sorry had a proper look at the link and that will come in really handy! Thanks! At least I wont be setting off blind!

The route plotter can plot up to 20,000 light years now and should only fail if your jump range is too short to travel between two systems along the route. Also if you have any route filters on (such as specific star types) this can cause issues if the specified system types are too far apart on the route. Permit locked areas can also cause the plotter to stop if you obviously don't have the permit.

I've had a quick scan of the thread, but it still doesn't answer my basic question : Should I buy this?

I loved Elite as a kid - will I be disappointed with this?

I'm not a huge gamer (PS4) but there are games I really like and finish (Demon Souls / Dark Souls / Skyrim etc.). Shoot everything that moves stuff doesn't appeal to me, sports games don't appeal to me. Elite seems like it could be the kind of thing I might enjoy (Skyrim in space?).

Do you have the time to put into it? and do you have specific goals in mind? Basically it needs alot of time to acutally get anywhere and you need to have some self drive to actually do something. Its almost like a second job.. However the sense of fulfillment is great, and once the Q1 update hits it will get even prettier.

I've decided I'm not a fan of the 'conda, even after putting 600m into it, its just a bus. Much preferred my python, so have bought and re specd one to generic flying around.

Plus stops the worry about rebuy as much as the conda, 10m is a lot more palatable then 50m!

Got my explorer AspEx to 50ly range too. Just working on getting a lvl5 engineer roll on every ship, so when the update hits they all get pushed down to a maxed out lvl 4, which will save time.

Yes, if I enjoy it. The Souls games need quite a lot of time - I usually find I need about 25 hours on those before it starts becoming "fun" and it's usually well over 100 hours before I complete one.

If it's a game I like, then in winter I can spend plenty of time on it - in summer, the PS4 tends to get forgotten about.

I'm only 94 hours into Elite according to Steam and I've barely scratched the surface. It's nothing like other time sink games I've found and is more like an MMO then a straight RPG.

Enjoyment is purely down to your mindset tbh. There is no "do this, do that", you are literally thrown into space and off you go.

I had 3 friends that all have been playing Elite for years, so that gave me some people to play with. Been fighting thargoids, or bounty hunting, or generally mucking around on planets in SRVs. Can see the game (well the game is 99% grinding) getting very samey if you don't mix it up.

I started playing a month ago only a few hours at a time over weekends so my progress has been very slow.

The tutorials really only give you the very basics of the game, most of the time I'm playing I have a laptop or tablet nearby to look up stuff.

It's a hugely different experience from story based games where there's a clear objective to achieve. Last week I joined in the "community goal" of shipping certain tech to a system for extra rewards. Now this meant re-speccing my ship to carry more cargo, finding routes to maximise profits etc. So I was a space trucker for a few hours, schlepping back and forth between systems. What livened things up was the incidentals; inceptions by pirates (which having not ditched my lasers&shields for even more cargo I turned into fun bounty collections) negotiating traffic jams around the most popular stations (when an Anaconda or Corvette wants out of a station you get out of the way quick!) Stacking data deliveries for more profit. Now my little Cobra didn't warrant any attention from PVP pirates and the NPC pirates were low level for me but it still felt like I was in a lively corner of the universe.

Once I'm up to a decent level I'm looking forward to exploring and maybe checking out Thargoids, hopefully low level trucking keeps me entertained until that point.

That’s amazing.

I’d love to have a look, can you remember where that was?

Generation ship Atlas in system Charick Drift. There are 5 ships audio logs to hear.

Ps. If you are using the Beta, it's only 20ly from Wyrd. I was in the normal game though.

Always tricky to suggest but the obvious thing is there are 3 game modes you can play in.

Open - NPC and other players
Private groups - NPCs and group players
Solo - Just NPCs.

Start in solo. You only have to deal with NPCs and they will be matched to your level in game.

I picked this up in the steam January sale for about £4. Now on just over 100 hours played time, around work and a 5 month old baby.

Its more fun when you play with others! Are you going PC, Xbox, or PS4? There is a very heavily populated player group thats like open but without the murder hobos killing you because they can called Mobius. (elitepve.com).

I generally play in Mobius or play in my friends private group.

If PC, Once bought, I give you 10 hours of playtime until you look at HOTAS controllers.

As a good kickstart, I'd look at masarks guide (ive mentioned in the thread above to get started. Don't have to follow it the whole way, but its a good way to get started.

Gives you a bit of exploring, and a bit of trading. Then lets you choose what you want to do.

Most important question, whats your first goal/thing to aim for? So many pretty places.

Are griefers that much of a problem? I have only played in open for my 20odd hours in the game, I really like the feeling that there's the random human element in there.

After assisting in last week's Community Goal I had 6M to spend upgrading my Cobra MK3 from space truck to space taxi. So 4A fuel scoop and executive cabin added and I took a wanted person for a 30min "sightseeing" tour which netted me half a million credits. Next to sign on for a 6000LY tour for 4M creds.

My first fuel scooping experience was another "this is pretty cool" moment. There's been enough of those already to make me want to keep going.

Around certain locations they can be, like where I am based and keep all my ships. They don't tend to target Cobras either, too easy.
