Cockpit based games (Elite, Live for Speed, etc) I don't have a problem with. Other games give me VR sickness after more than about 15 minutes, and it takes a long time to pass.

The main issue for me is eye strain, as some of the text in game can be difficult to read with the SDE (screen door effect). I'd expect this to be massively improved once it's officially released.

Matt that's odd .... My system specs are exactly the same as yours... i2500k @4.5ghz / 8gb ram / EVGA 570GTX. I'm running it at 1920x1080 with everything set on max and its silky smooth !! Has been from Beta 1...

confused Running an i5 2500k @ 4.5ghz, 8gb RAM and a GTX 570 and I can't run it on anything more than minimum all round without getting judder. Even then, it's not perfect in stations.
Strange, you should be getting better performance, are you using direct-HMD mode instead of extended desktop ? Maybe you have a background process hogging some resources ?

I'm using the latest geforce drivers which has specific ED optimisations according to the release notes. I couldn't get above minimum in beta2.

Is it possible to play with Rift for extended periods without suffering any after effects ...
There are some effects. Space station docking makes me a little dizzy particularly if I'm doing a lot of banking turns, probably more because the 'ground' is a cylinder. As another poster mentioned the screen-door effect is a little annoying, especially for this game as red pixels look more blocky because of the rifts pentile matrix display, so that includes almost every bit of orange text in the game.

I tend to need to clean my lenses after 10-15 minutes anyway due to eyebrows/eyelashes wiping on them so I'm not using it for hours nonstop.

Cheers - Am really in two minds about buying this. I used to love playing X-Wing Alliance, and I thought Darkstar One is OK.

I have all of the X3 games - they look nice but for the life of me, I cannot get into any of the games and must conclude they're for dedicated followers who know the game inside out already. Have spent hours on these and am still none the wiser...

So, is this game more accessible for 'noobs'?

Give its ancestor, Frontier: First Encounters, a go and see what you think. Although it's a few generations old, it'll give you an idea as to the thinking of the designers when building the game.

It is easier to fly than frontier mind.... because of the flight assist.

It's actually a hard question to answer, I was right at home from the start and found it easy to fly, but the game isn't very good at explaining stuff to you (maybe that's a work in progress) A couple of times I've bought upgrades then found myself wondering why they don't work until I looked it up on the forums.

So it's kind of both noob friendly, and not noob friendly.

A mate of mine said that he'd heard there was going to be a soft launch for people with beta access (ie, after a certain date your stuff and progress wont be wiped while in 'beta') before the main launch on the 16th, has anyone else heard this as I cant find anything about it on the elite website.

Ive not bought the game yet, might get it tonight but not sure the extra £15 to get access to a month of beta is worth it, if their is some sort of head start then it may be worth it.

Yeah there is, they're calling it the gamma phase, it will probably start shortly after the game premiere event on 22nd november., so you get 3 weeks(ish) head start.

Whether that is worth £15 or not is for you to decide.

One of the missions is made easy when killing them when in reverse!

yeah I gave up on them, the tutorials currently seem to be missing some stuff that was in previous releases, ie pop ups that explain stuff.

Ive just started playing the game, ive still not got the hang of getting out of supercruise without having to turn round. I think a lot of stuff just takes practice, im going to lose a lot of sidewinders, but that the same as how I approached eve.

Me and a mate were messing around with the group only thing, it was odd to see that my missions didn't transfer from open play to group play.

Hold the ETA timer at around 0:07 once you get closer, usually setting the throttle at the lowest setting where the marker turns blue should achieve this and you should get there without overshooting.

^^ each star will be different to the amount of reducing speed depending on the gravity of the star and planet and mass of craft is all taken into account! If you look like you are over shooting shut down engine dive away from the planet and loop back trying to shed the speed before you get the destination!

Watch your speed and distance indicators on the left panel, try to keep the blue markers equidistant from the safe drop zone markings and/or keep the est time to destination at 9-10 secs.

This is what I mean by turning around smile

I was trying to drop my speed at 1200km from the destination, then drop out of super cruise at 600km but some objects i've struggled with. I have had some success, the first USS I did I drop out of supercruise right on top of, so i'm guessing that the gravity of larger objects is what i'm struggling with.

I will have a look at the indicators on the left dash and try and figure it out but its not very descriptive, I need to find the manual.

Setting your throttle position so that it turns blue gives you an autothrottle that should slow you down at the right distance.

Is there an easy way to stop ships running away from you?

I've interdicted a number of ships and they just tend to spool up the FSD and shoot off again shortly after attacking them (providing they don't die first, but that's rare). I've tried targeting the drive but am either not a good enough shot, or doing enough damage to it quickly enough, to make a difference.

Something tells me I'm doing it wrong, but can't figure out what it is confused
