Setting your throttle position so that it turns blue gives you an autothrottle that should slow you down at the right distance.
This, surely. Nothing to it and certainly don't need to bugger about changing speeds, keeping the time constant or looping round. It does it all for you!Having said that I only worked this out after reading the forums so agree there's a distinct lack of instructions - but then I imagine this will be addressed with the full release.

They promised a single player offline mode, but it's not in yet.
Well they are now saying that it's impractical to have an offline mode due to the amount of info stored on their servers, and have therefore made a liar of me...There is still single player though, but you'll have to log in.

Well they reckon it's because of the background simulation and the evolving galaxy...
I'm not bothered myself, more bothered that I'd answered someones question with the wrong info.
Some of the kickstarter backers pledged on the strength of an offline version though, a bit tough on them

Yup, including me :-( .
Clearly do have internet of 'sorts', but my main opportunities to play are when I'm stuck in hotels with work for weeks, and I don't have reliable internet.
I would not have backed if there had not have been a promise of offline.. very disappointed.

The first game came with a lenslok didn't it?
Nobody liked those either.
I dived in on the second day of kickstarter, there was no mention of an offline mode then, they added it later, probably due to people asking for one.
I play pretty much everything online anyway through steam, even though most don't need it.
I did want an offline mode though so I could still play if the servers went down.

There's also the problem of authentication, what happens if I edit my local save-game to give myself a bunch of money/ships/etc and then switch into online mode, how does the game tell the difference between stuff I legit earned and stuff I cheated ?
This would have massive implications for the online side and could potentially be ruinous to its economy. This I think was one of the main reasons Diablo3 was online only.
This could be solved by not allowing the player to switch his offline profile to online, but that means people are more likely to pirate it

May I ask if we think this would play the game sufficiently well?
Thanks in advance.
Yep,Thanks in advance.
latest gen i5 would be sufficient if you want to save some money (it not that much cheaper though). And id get a laptop with an SSD or add an SSD myself, no idea why gaming laptops don't come with SSDs...

Thanks for this Foliage. The specs page for this game says quad-core so that rules out i5, as I understand it. latest gen i5 would be sufficient if you want to save some money (it not that much cheaper though). I was hoping to find something with an internal SSD SATA port (the memory from this dying unit) but it seems they have to be plugged-in externally.
In other news, I can't wait for this game to come out!
I'm running the beta's on a 3 year old I7-2670QM with an Nvidia GT555M.
Processor is overkill (and not stretched at all), graphics is the bottleneck.
It is about playable (though really asteroid fields probably avoided)- but as said, graphics are the bottleneck.
I'm playing pretty much with graphics to minimum, and it still looks fab

First generation (ie 6-7year old) i7 (D0 bloomfield?) here overclocked though and with a GTX770 and 12gig of corsair dominator ram. elite on max settings. 144hz monitor I generally see 100fps.Processor is overkill (and not stretched at all), graphics is the bottleneck.

Latest i5's are quadcore & 64bit I think, but I think the reference to quad core is reference to a specific chip anything newer than that would do the job (i3 etc), Im not sure if elite runs over multiple cores, if it does it wont be more than 2 I wouldn't think.
Also the version of the game that is beta 3 could be very old (6 months old), the game on release will be optimised and run better.
Beta 3 appears to be just checking for exploits & checking game mechanics of new modules, final release will likely be a tad different. Do we get a character creator, proper naming, grouping in open play systems etc etc etc? these are things that might be in the final release.

Proper naming is already in, grab yours whilst it's still free! I was beaten to CMDR Bushmills :/

That's not proper naming, proper naming would be doing it in game as per very other mmo doing it on the website feel placeholder to me.CMDR Fractious at your service!

I have a name, but its likely names will be reset on launch too. This is my 3rd MMO head start this year.
Afternoon All.
Really looking forward to the release of Elite Dangerous.
I haven't yet played the Beta but have pre-ordered my copy for the full release..
Just a couple of quick q's.
Are any of you playing with just mouse and keyboard as the input controls ? want to use only mouse and kb until mid next year when I'll invest in some flight-sticks / joypad etc..
Also, will be playing on a single monitor with 1920x1080 res.. would multiple monitors be wise - would I gain more space ? ( excuse the pun )
Thanks.
