OK, I have begin to dip my toe in and have done the training missions. In the actual start menu I have several options of ship \location \credits due to, I assume, the level I funded at. Does anyone know if all these options remain after I pick one? Can I start one of the options, then restart with another one later if I feel like it? If they all disappear I need to be careful which one I pick!
The start options should come back if you clear your save, that clears everything though and puts you right back to square one.
Restarting from scratch with another option was what I was expecting. I was thinking of doing a "classic" start to learn the ropes then use one of the more advanced starting options later. Just wanted to make sure that would be possible and I wouldn't lose those fancy options I paid for!

Can I ask you when you backed Groover?
I backed for a couple of hundred quid right at the start of Alpha but I don't get any alternate start options. Did you back during the actual Kickstart campaign?

I'm pretty sure the start options were only in the kickstarter and the backers app that came after the kickstarter, don't think they were included in the alpha.
However, you could always log a support ticket and ask, couldn't do any harm.

I'm the same, backed the Kickstarter right from the beginning and have no alternate start locations, I should at least have the Imperial Bounty Hunter option (I'm pretty sure that was what it was called).

On another note, I'm bloomin fuming. Just exiting the docking bay tonight, an NPC ship appears from a nowhere, thrusts in to position and immediately just barges in getting me caught up in the toaster rack. I then can't get out, get a trespass warning and get blown up. Lost almost 250,000Cr in the process, which took 3 days of playing to build up mad

Is there a way to pause the game? I'd assumed escape did it but it appears you still run out of oxygen and die. I really don't want to have to save and exit every time I leave it.

So Ebiggrin is a persistent universe and is the reason why an Internet connection is required. You can't pause because of the universe having all the other players and the economy ticking along. Land at a station and exit the game, the server sees your ship idle there until you next play. It's why the missions change overnight.

Am currently tooling around in the start sidewinder around the Eravate area. Have c100k in the bank having done some trading and missions, lots of exploration and picked up several meaty bounties. Punched above my weight by killing an asp and 3 Cobras with the default load out- not the same fight! Have only died twice as well. Playing a very mixed style, as I don't want to specialise too much. Upgraded the cargo space to 10, the only customisation done so far.

Going to try some mining today, and then buy a viper and go bounty hunting!
J.R.Raspin if anyone wants to add me.

The game is amazing, well worth the money for the visuals and sound alone. Have always been a fan of these games and having spent a difficult first 3 hours now getting into the swing nicely

I did back in the kick starter, yes, and not to the degree you did! Solo play starts me at the founders world with more credits and a slightly upgraded ship, there are no other options, but online play has a few start options.

However it has a solo play mode so you'd think you'd be able to pause it but alas no. That's a major downer for me (and I suspect I'm not alone) as I tend to play computer games in the gaps between other things happening, so quite often want to be able to pause and leave a game for half an hour. Waiting 5 minutes while I find a station and dock is a pain and means I'll play less as I'll need to be sure I've got a clear 10-15 minutes to play before I undock.

You don't need to dock to exit the game, if not in combat you despawn after 15 second from exiting, in combat is iirc 5 mins. You will resume from the same spot when you start the game back up, in normal speed regardless of whether you were in SC or not.
I was concerned I would be sitting there motionless in space ready to be picked off but asked around on one of the FB groups.

I'm in the same area, doing trade runs between Eravate and Yakabugai, say hello if you see Cmdr ash73! smile

How do you engage in combat? Nobody ever interdicts me (to the extent I've ditched my shields and scanners for extra cargo space) and I can't afford the gadget to pull people out of supercruise. There are anti-piracy contracts but I can't get any action, so to speak.

Only managed 16K on my first evening of trading. No doubt there's a better method than jotting down the prices, but at least I've made a start.
Cool I will add you. I don't know a way of interdicting without the specialist equipment you mention. I always submit if interdicted myself, just throttle down, and I have not lost a fight yet. Keep an eye out for unidentified signal sources, sometimes you will find something to attack depending on how you are playing. often it is a wanted pirate plus 2 cops, attack the perp and you might pick up a bounty. Don't hit the cops though either crashing into them or shooting. You can also find people around nav beacons a and resource extraction areas in mining systems. Must say that I Have not attacked or been attacked by human players yet. Just npc's.

Regards trading there's an online tool linked to above, elite trading. Finds trade routes or the next best trade from wherever you are. I See it as like reading the FT! You can run the game in a native windowed mode so if you have 2 screens you can browse that whilst your ship is supercruising.

I found a load of Elite ships templates on the web so I made a Cobra Mk.I and a Mk.III today to sit on my desk while I play Elite.

Just print onto thick paper, cut out and glue smile

Lens flair is to cover up glueing mistake battle damage.

I'm supposed to be playing Elite, but now I'm contemplating adding a Python to my mini-fleet instead hehe

I don't really get Fire Groups.... I'm using an X52 and have lasers assigned to the secondary trigger and cannon to the primary. I want to use a Kill Warrant Scanner but how do I use it without firing my weapons ?

You can set a primary and secondary fire button for several different fire groups, you set it up in the menu on the right of the cockpit. There is a keybind to cycle through the groups, just set one up with only your scanner in and no weapons, and cycle to it to use it.
I never use secondary fire, I have the second fire button on the joystick to cycle fire groups and I just use it switch to the weapons I want .

Doesn't the insurance cover that? I thought it protected you from total loss.

I have several fire groups set, group 1 is all my weapons, beam lasers on primary trigger (1), Frag cannons and kill warrant scanner on secondary trigger (2), group 2 has Lasers on (1) and Shield Booster on (2), group 3 has ECM on (1) and Shield Booster on (2).

I had a variant for exploration that had discovery scanner on it's own group for simplicity too.

Absolutely right, thankfully I kept back the insurance money and wasn't trading with it (so got my Cobra back), but I was carrying 25T of gold at the time frown
