Have never played the previous Far Cry games (never heard of them tbh)
As a newb to the series is it worth grabbing for Christmas?
There's no continuing story, so you're safe to dive in. I'll put up some thoughts after I've played a bit over the weekend, but the early reports suggest it's very good.As a newb to the series is it worth grabbing for Christmas?

This sounds really positive. I'm looking for the next game to play... I've got bored with Borderlands2 and feel like I've 'done' Skyrim now (in the sense I've had enough. I haven't bothered with the DLCs).
I did consider Dishonoured as it looked interesting but didn't get round to buying it.
I'll probably wait until it comes out on Steam though. As others have said, I don't really want loads of DRM apps running on my machine.

Very impressed so far, the tutorial sets the scene very well. Makes you fear for the character and explains the concept very well. Lots of weapons available and the driving and controls seems to work very well.
A nice addition of having to climb radio masts to reveal the map, I guess that comes from Assasins creed.
The island makes me feel uneasy, it's beautiful to behold but you never know what's about and with tigers, sharks and enemies patrolling it pays to keep your wits about you.
My only complaint so far seems to be the camera doesn't feel right, seems like its a bit to zoomed in, as it the first person camera has moved 12" in front.
I have attacked a strong hold, harvested flowers to make medicine and hunted animals to make my back pack bigger. I would agree its Skyrim with guns.
Very impressed!

Got mine early, played a few hours last night and think it's superb.
It really does feel like a living jungle, the combat mechanic feels solid, weapons look and sound good and the driving mechanic is good.
The story seems great so far, the opening cinematic was very strong, it paints the picture of you being the Average Joe quite well, I really feel invested in the main character.
Will sink some more time into it this weekend.

This game sounds promising. I may trade in forza horizon for it (which after the extreme excitement of first getting it wore off, I find a bit dull).
I appreciate most wont have explored fully yet but how big does the map seem? Is it as big as Far Cry 2? I felt Far Cry 2 was too big with not enough stuff in it - so much empty space and having to run for miles!

Not sure on the map, but this has a much better fast travel system, similar to Skyrim really, once you've captured an outpost you're free to fast travel to it. I can remember getting around in FC2 involved catching a bus to the station nearest your objective, then getting a car and driving to it, then the same in reverse once you were done. Doesn't look like there's a lack of things to do either, with one complaint being that there's almost too much to do in each part of the map.I appreciate most wont have explored fully yet but how big does the map seem? For all newcomers to Far Cry.
You can download the original Far Cry from Good Old Games for $9.99 DRM FREE and it works on Win7.
A classic FPS.

Map seems very big but not to big as lots going on everywhere as fast travel is great. I reccomend turning off aim assist as its so much more satisfying when hunting animals with the bow.
Had a couple of interesting bits, I was hunting a deer when a leopard came up behind me and killed me and also running from some pirates I hid behind a rock and some big emu bird came up and pecked me once and I died...
Really enjoying it and only done a couple of missions, have done a lot of hunting and exploring though.

How good do the weapons feel and sound? Got to be some of the best feeling guns in any recent game! Also, they've done an incredible job of creating tension as you just roam the island. It might look beautiful, but walking around can be pretty hairy at times. As the sun goes down and you're deep in some jungle and you start hearing the gruff snorts of a komodo dragon... it gets quite hairy! Also, I had a great moment where I jumped off a cliff near the start into a river because I saw some plants to capture, only to land in the water (beautiful water effects, naturally), then discover a hidden watery cave that went under part of the island full of hidden treasures. It's quite Skyrimmy in that respect.
And the characterisation is immense; I'd forgotten how well computer games can do storytelling to be honest, and FC3's characters are brilliant!
Also loving how well the stealth system works; it's predictable and tense, guards don't have 20/20 x-ray vision, and you can really plan attacks on outposts by tagging guards with the camera. Ace.
Must play more.

You sum it up well Tim, I was hoping others would feel the same but I would say the game almost borders on a master piece. I haven't used many of the guns as I am trying to do most of the game with a bow and arrow but I used the PKM yesterday when being chased down and it sounds great and was a wall of bullets which I assume is probably what they are like. Nothing was standing after my predator esqe firing into the bush at muzzle flashes.
