There's always stuff to do, for sure. The metro area is ~6m people so there's a lot going on. Would you say Atl is worth a long weekend there should my mate not show up?
There's plenty of bars and clubs in VaHi, Buckhead and Midtown as mentioned before if you want to do some, ahem, socialising. Atlanta is generally viewed as a very pro-singles city so there's lots of weekend activity to that regards.
If you prefer touristy stuff, the aquarium, Coca-cola world, Delta flight museum, etc are all places that are popular with visitors.
If you've want to go further afield, there's some great countryside to the north of the city and in Northern Georgia.
I usually recommend people visit Stone Mountain Park if they can. It has a somewhat chequered history, being the birthplace of the KKK and having the largest confederate monument in the world (namely an enormous carving of Stonewall Jackson, Robert E Lee and Jefferson Davis, three confederate generals). It also has lots of other activities, a big civil war education center and so on. Moreover, though, you can climb to the top (or get a cable car) and see great views of the city and surrounding area.
TLDR; yes, Atlanta is good for a weekend in that there's loads of stuff to so in the area. Also, the relative rarity of your accent could help you... make friends... if that's what you're after!
