DISCLAIMER: kind of a re-post

Ok so I applied for the PH clan on Bungie.net, is this for PS4 only ?

I'm playing it on PS3 and I'm looking for players to run through some of the strikes and weekly challenges if there's anyone out there I can add ?

I set up the clan primarily for PS4 players so we could all play together, but at the moment there's no easy way to do that even when you're in the same clan, so feel free to join.

That's my concern too - I'm level 22 with a titan and level 6 with a warlock and the gameplay is a bit repetitive so far. Even the "surprise" events that happen around the maps are just a rehash of an end of level boss or "kill lots of enemies" that you've already killed before.

The multiplayer is also a bit basic.

Hopefully I'm just missing quite a lot (haven't got involved with Cabals yet, for example), but I'm struggling to see the "incredibly expansive scope" that many reviewers are crowing on about?

It's definitely not expansive in scope, once you complete the dull story, you then are effectively left to do boss runs to farm new equipment. This in itself is not necessarily a bad thing, the problem imo is that the game world is so dull and dreary, there's nothing to really see or do. In particular, the tunnels and canyons that lead from one area to another (cleverly disguised loading screens) are st. There is one of them on Venus which Peter Dinklage explains was a research facility - except there are no rooms branching off from any of the corridors, it's just a winding corridor with nothing in it. In fact, none of the buildings have anything in them at all, there is little reason to explore, particularly as the loot in chests is generally crap, with enemies dropping the good stuff. It's clear that each area serves only as a room to fight in, there is no reward for going off the beaten path - in fact as there are no enemies in these tunnels and caves, it's not worth going into them as your experience and loot collection will only be slowed down by having nothing to shoot at.

The game setting itself is, imo, dull and bland. I understand that the Grimoire system allows you to unlock backstory and information by killing enemies, but it should be accessible in game, rather than needing to download an app, which as it happens, isn't even available for Windows Phone users like me. As such, I have no clue who these organisations are, what the enemies are or why I should give a fk about any of it.

It can be fun in multiplayer,, co-op at least, and it's saving grace is that the shooting is fun. The weapon effects are excellent, in particular the Warlock's special abilities, and the guns have a satisfying feel to them. On that note though, the loot is what these games are all about, and the loot in this game is not that exciting. I'm level 20 now, or level 21 with my gear bonus, and only now are things getting interesting. Still, it's not the kind of cool stuff you see in a game like Borderlands. Whoops I said it, the name of a game that is old tech, old news and yet does practically everything Destiny tries to do, but better. Borderlands is bursting at the seams with character and style, and it entices the player to see and do everything. The only improvement Destiny really makes is having strike playlists where you can click a button and be dropped straight into a hard fight.

The Crucible is crap, the same jumpy, floaty, twitch-shooting style was that popularised in Halo. Tactics or gameplans are non-existant, just run around, shoot everything in sight and hope you land more hits than your enemies. Not exactly gripping, more painfully dull and unnecessary, detracting development time and money from the single player experience.

If it sounds like I'm being down on Destiny, I suppose it's because it was hyped so badly. It's not a game-changer at all. It's a fun, if not terribly imaginative shooter.

I agree. I expected a massive epic game with tons of stuff to do. Huge bosses to kill and lots of weapons and vehicles. Infact its a massive game with bugger all to do. Small un-epic bosses, few differing weapons and a speeder bike.. frown

I hope they add more to it soon. It feels like it has potential but I'm pretty disappointed.

You are right, it's not ground breaking. It's Halo with a few MMO conventions stuck on so it's all stuff we have seen before. However the saving grace for me is that the shooting mechanics are fun, the enemy AI is at least semi intelligent i.e. they don't just stand around waiting to be shot and what variety there is in the types of enemies is pretty interesting and the super bosses provide a decent challenge. I also found what there is of a the background story quite interesting so all in all it's a slicker version of stuff that has been done before.

However it is sorely missing some much needed extra content. I suppose they are holding some of this stuff back for the DLC's etc but this is the problem with modern games now. In effect you pay for the basic game engine and then pay for the content separately which is a rather worrying and annoying trend.

To compare it to Halo is unfair, Halo has much more interesting landscape, gun, vehicle, character and enemy design, a real plot etc. Halo is an incredible achievement in it's ability to create an immersive world that is memorable and intriguing. Destiny is very much an identikit sci fi setting.

I've just played a level 20 strike with my brother and some random there, the strike bosses have such ridiculous health pools that it took 3 level 21-22 players with appropriate guns some 7-8 minutes to whittle his health down, as he slowly walked around the arena chasing us, like a sci fi Benny Hill in slow motion, with rockets. It's ok, but tbh I'll be peddling this off as soon as the new Borderlands game drops.

These achievements are as glitchy as fk. Just loaded in to a new game and had 'bane of the emperor', 'Decryptologist' and 'lucky 7's' unlock.

Clearly been waiting in the pipe.

I too will be picking up Borderlands next month. It's actually at the top of my 'wanted' list at the moment.

Whilst the game improves immeasurably after finishing the story and getting to Level 20, it doesn't transcend the dull beginning and become an incredible game. A fun game, no doubt but not incredible. I'll try and summarise a few thoughts I've had on it to avoid rambling too much (I've thought a lot on this game over recent days).

  • The loot is pretty st for the most part. I know there is 'more to come' in time, as Bungie say and the Exotic class gear has yet to be unlocked. But for the most part, there are a small number of gun models and a few skins and that's it. My 'The Devil You Know' rare handcannon looks like the first handcannon I found, just skinned in blue and orange and with monster stats. Borderlands hit on the key aspect of keeping it's gun's interesting with it's modular generation system that meant guns always looked different, and sexy.
  • Similarly, the loot in Borderlands was so exciting because it was so variable. Elemental damage was more obvious, as were different fire patterns and effects. Not every gun was great, but it meant you regularly chopped and changed weapons as time went on to see what was next, and what was best. In Destiny, there is little reason to change weapons and the Primary/Secondary/Special divide on furthers this. The guns need time and XP to rank up and unlock new powers, in that time you'll typically focus your armour stats towards bonuses for a certain type of gun and end up locked in a tactical stalemate with the weapon system. I've been using the handcannon/sniper rifle/machinegun for what seems like forever now. The Engrams seem to be influence themselves towards your playstyle too; I've not had a rare or worthy assault rifle or burst rifle or shotgun or fusion rifle for ages.
  • The result is, although the guns look pretty, they are pretty generic in operation. Even the exotic sounding things like fusion rifles turn out to simply be a charge rifle.
  • The gun classes were no doubt kept traditional in part to make Crucible feel balanced. fk the Crucible, it's painfully dull. I love a good multiplayer shooter, but whereas Titanfall felt incredible, this just feels dull. To further the insult, there is gear and rewards specifically unlocked in the crucible, or obtained with currency awarded therein.
  • Wasting time on the Crucible means resources were spent there when they could have been used to add more content to the singleplayer mode. After finishing the story, the game essentially devolves into Strike mode as it offered the best kit, as well as unique currency towards other great kit. There is little reason to go back and play the story missions, even the best story missions.
  • The story mode could have done with having the heat turned up. It's a point and click adventure for the most part offering no challenge and it's quite insipid. In strike mode, the fights are more frantic and exciting. The entire story mode offers nothing like the excitement of one strike mission. In that respect, it's quite a long and dull story mode.
  • But the strikes themselves are scripted, so they're essentially the same every time.
  • The backstory to the game is very deep and the Grimoire entries unlocked through progression are interesting. It is a shame though that they're not accessible in game via the menu system, as Mastodon says. I have to use my phone to look at them, which doesn't make sense. Why not just include the Grimoire in the game?

It's definitely worth bothering with, don't get me wrong. It also gets better as it goes on, such to the point that my opinion towards it has warmed after some initial coolness.

It definitely works well with the drop in connectivity, hub areas, playlists for grouping players and stuff. Nothing it offers is new in any sense but the integration and execution of the ideas is often seamless and very well done. It's a far more advanced game in many respects than Borderlands, but the core gameplay isn't quite as good.

What will really be interesting though, is where Borderlands goes next. The Pre-Sequel is just about to arrive and should be fantastic, but it's old tech and though it'll be a joy to play, it's connectivity systems will be nowhere near as advanced as Destiny, mainly because it wasn't designed to be an MMO from the start. However, the next Borderlands game (which I sincerely hope is next gen only) will probably feature many of the MMO elements seen in Destiny. That is the future, and it's the way things are going.

Originally posted this in the thread on here for the PS4 players, but it's equally relevant here, so:

Guys, some quick tips on weapon types vs enemy types (useful if you're having problems against a certain boss):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTLosBMLt3Q

In summary, there are 4 weapon types:

Kinetic (no symbol)
Fire (red, flame symbol)
Arc (blue, jagged star symbol)
Void (purple, whirl symbol)

These symbols are shown on the weapon's info page and against the weapon on your HUD display.

The 3 non-kinetic ("elemental") weapon types don't do anything different to kinetic weapons against enemies without shields.

However, if an enemy has a shield, their shield has a colour: either red, blue or purple, most noticeable when you're shooting at it.

The elemental weapons do bonus damage to the shield only of an enemy whose shield colour matches the elemental weapon colour.

Finally, there is no headshot/weakspot damage multiplier when an enemy has a shield in place.

I am really starting to the question the wisdom of this "No communication between players" thing. I know that Bungie disabled P2P mic comms in general play to stop interruptions, trolling etc, but when you're being MM'd into a strike playlist game you should at least get to talk to your striketeam then. If you actually can talk to them, then none of the morons I've played with today have been using their mics, or even listening to what I'm saying. When you're on a level 20 strike trying to push on, and your two matchmaker-selected fireteam buddies are running around like ADHD kids, shooting at level 12 enemies and getting bogged down and having their asses kicked before we've even entered the fking strike area you know that you won't stand a chance of finishing it.

I'm starting to believe in Bungie's decision now that MM'd raids wouldn't work, at least not with their policy of blocking communication with other players.

I've come to the point now where it's not fun, and I can't see the point of grinding for gear as I'll just be selling this disappointment of a game as soon as I get a chance any how.

Yep, that's the one.

"Go to help.bungie.net and search:
cattle"

Yeah, great or just tell me what the error is on the screen via the big chuffing box that's connected to the internet. They really do like to try to drive you to their app or website.
