I do like this game but it's fking irritating at times. I did a strike mission earlier against the Psion Flayers and basically carried the two people I was with for the whole mission. Most kills zero deaths and the most revives. I got nothing apart from an uncommon armour piece. They got two legendaries and a strange coin.
Then there's times I've got legendary engrams that decoded as rare.

fking rage quit some days.

This is particularly irritating - I've not got any purple engrams but I've had plenty of rare ones and I say about 50% if not more have decoded down to green and likewise greens giving useless white ones

A patch released yesterday / today is supposed to fix that however and that rare will now ALWAYS decode to rare or better and purple to legendary or better - we'll see I guess along with the supposed increase in drop rate

Its an MMO guys, its the same as all the rest. Just rinse and repeat over and over until you grind up the items or equipment you need/ want.

Alternatively just either farm up on patrols and strike playlists for the vanguard items or the Crucible for crucible items or one of the factions items. Guaranteed Legendary equipment and weapons.

Personally i'm enjoying it a lot and looking forward to the DLC and patches to come.

Has the loot cave been patched? Came across two guys trying to use it last night and decided to have a disco in it, cue loads of hilarious messages from them.

This sums it up! I haven't been doing any grinding/farming. I just pick up a load of bounties and head off. I usually get a nice mix of patrols and strikes done in a evening. I just enjoy shooting stuff and find that a strike never pans out the same everytime.

I'm still only as far as the Venus story missions (Lvl 16), but have had some good fun on the Patrol missions; half the fun has been just running off and exploring the environments. Time will tell if I start to find the game tedious as I get further up I guess, but so far it's a lot better than I was led to believe by some of the original reviews when it came out biggrin

It's the only way it could work too - otherwise a level 27 character will sneeze and nuke every level 4 within 3 miles whilst a level 3 character will be banging away all day with their machine gun.

A lvl 4 is no way near as tough as a lvl 26 mob. I can one shot a lvl 4 with my Auto-rifle, whereas it can take almost a full clip to kill a lvl 26. If what you said was true why bother leveling up at all, and why can't a level 3 character complete level 26 strikes.

The reward system, while partially random for certain aspects will give a higher general value of drops for higher level strikes and also provides higher exp for collecting Motes of Light. Higher leveled mobs are also more likely to provide higher graded drops themselves.

You level down to the enemy in question, so once they are at or below your level you'll do exactly the same amount of damage and take the same number of shots to drop them, likewise if you're level 25, a level 21 dreg and a level 1 dreg will both do you the same amount of damage. Loot drops are exactly the same too, I don't know where you've got this idea that higher level enemies will drop higher graded loot, as Bungie have confirmed that isn't the case.

This post here on Reddit explains it very well:

Well I've had a quick session on it since the last patch dropped and picked up 3 blue engrams. All 3 decoded into rare items so at least that bit is working now. And yes, my understanding is the "loot cave" has been patched to reduce the spawn times from 6 to 40 seconds or something like that. Pity I never got to use it as I didn't know about it frown

Must have been luck, I'm not seeing a massive difference in drops or quality of the items I get from engrams, still uncommons from a rare frown

While they do downscale some stats, the article has missed a lot.

using his scaling formula: if your level 28 and fighting a level 24 mob it should be harder than a level 28 mob.
4 lvl or lower below mob: 100% damage penalty
0 lvl below or higher than mob: 0% damage penalty

What it fails to take into account is effective hit-points for both yourself and the mobs. Just try it, go to the last mission and complete it on normal then Very Hard. Guarantee its easier the first time around.

I wouldn't worry too much about it - it was just a "quicker" way of killing a lot of enemies, the rate at which engrams and kit dropped was the same as the rest of the game, i.e. you still had to stand there and kill hundreds of enemies to get a rare engram and thousands to get a legendary.

That would be the heroic modifier which throws in extra enemies. At level 28 go and do one of the missions which has a base level of say 2, try it at level 16, 20 and 24 and you'll find each one just the same.

Bit of threadnomancy here but as it applies to Destiny as a whole and not platform specific, I felt I would add here.

Having had a look about the internet I found some news on the upcoming DLC packs for destiny, that some got access to (though not able to use them) in the Ghost and legendary editions of the game.

Both "The Dark Below" and "House of Wolves" will add 3 story, 23/2 strike missions and a raid each.

However looking at the information for the dark below, it is noticeable in the bug that showed the mission names on the maps recently that the 3 story missions are level 8 10 and 18. Many are asking why is new DLC content coming out at levels most players are going to be well past by that point, with most being in the mid-high 20's. The general consensus is that these missions should have ben in the initial release and hopefully will add some story content to explain a bit more as to what the heck is going on.

The second DLC has 3 story missions that are 2 level 20 missions and one level 22 mission, which looks more promising to actually start to expand the story.

The first one 'Dark Below@ is set on earth under the cosmodrome and should be here in December.
