Well, with over a 1000 cars, there's going to be give somewhere, like the Veyron being a standard car as one example...
More proof PD need to focus on quality rather than quantityAs for the sound, I listened to that (admittedly appalling) Focus ST which was linked above, and then clicked through to the Top Gear test track footage. The drive-by sounded identical, so not really evidence for them sounding different.
I've been playing GT since it's inception as well - bought a PS1, PS2 and PS3 to play them
IMO the quality has varied a bit, at least in terms of what I want from a GT game. I've kept on coming back to the series but I played GT5 quite a bit less than I thought I would.
I'm glad they have moved the physics engine forward again, that was one of the key features that keep me coming back to the series. I've watched videos of most (console) racing games and many seem to go with a more arcade-like handling feel - E.g. it's as if you can see them 'pop' into oversteer rather than it being a natural progression.
I'd not say that GT has been flawless, but the feeling of weight and inherent 'rightness' of the handling model has always been a cut above the rest imo. It feels 'honest'.
That's also not to say that I'd imagine GT to be a pure sim - it's a console game after all. It needs to be accessible to a wide range of people and to be interacted with by a wide range of controllers from dualshock pads to full wheel & pedal setups.
The Standard and Premium cars system in GT5 did undermine the game for me quite a lot. For all the drawbacks, I do prefer the cockpit view's feeling of connection with the car. It also means you can accurately see the position of the steering wheel when playing with the dualshock. So the lack of cockpit view for the standard cars felt like a backwards step - these Standard cars felt like they were relics from the older games.
I know that cockpit view was added to the standard cars in a later patch but to be honest I'd already stopped playing the game.
Yes, the sounds. Been disappointed with the engine sounds as others have been. Some of the cars sound great, exactly as you would imagine, yet others - that you know sound amazing - turn into a mechanical drone.
I really thought that GT5 would fix that - surely that was the area that needed more attention? So when it released it added to the other areas of disappointment to reduce the amount of time I spent playing GT5 (loading times, etc.)
I remain hopeful for GT6 - but that video of the Xbow lapping Silverstone didn't exactly fuel my enthusiasm. It's not yet the finished article I know, and I'll certainly be trying that demo in July

Maybe on the drive-by they do, but when you're actually playing the game they sound nothing alike. In GT5 the car sounds like it has a pipe organ for an engine. In car Focus ST GT5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSA15apL3s4#t=84s

Sorry to keep droning on (ho ho) about it, but it completely spoils the immersion of the game for me.

I'm not a forza fanboy, just proof that it can be done. I'll also admit that they probably over did it a bit on forza, but blimey it sounds good!! I hope they do get it right, I'll buy it either way as I do like GT5!!
I've barely played forza, but damn that sounds nice.
I'm also very impressed by how much detail they get into the scenery. Unless its the nub urging, GT5s tracks are so bland. Yes I'm aware circuits aren't the most interesting of places, but they're not as bland as GT5 makes out.
Also that audio, bleh, sounds exactly like the focus in the in car shot, rubbish.
