Same here, in and out due to the heat in my loft and outside things to do in the summer.

Bought a Z4 recently so need to get into that, plus the MX5 advanced championship has begun now so MX5s at slightly more interesting circuits.

Good to hear it. I had a fair time away but recently I've invested more time and just hit my B licence yesterday after three wins in the Ruf Cup and a second place.

What are you guys racing? Besides the skippy.
Mostly Skippy for me - although not much actual racing, mostly TT and practice sessions.

I settled down to do the 10:45 RUF cup race on Charlotte road course last night, my last before the track changed, and it was going really well. I started on Poll, great start and leading for the first few laps with only one real contender, I was faster round the course but on the oval he could hold slightly higher speed than me. By lap 10 lead had changed places and coming onto the oval he made a small mistake and I hit it much faster than him, were were side by side all the way around and I managed to out brake him on T1, holding the lead for the next lap pushing the gap a little further till coming down the main straight, I brake for T1, turn in and SMACK! My race is over.

Checking back on the replay, the guy in 2nd didn't brake and turned so as to strike me, destroying my nearside rear wheel and ending my race a little under half way, giving me a 4x for the pleasure. I was fuming and all he could say was he forgot to brake. A B licence racer, who was fast in a close race with me up to this point... It's the first time I've filed a protest sadly but it just seemed too deliberate to me.

To console myself, here are a couple of screens of the latest paint I'm using for the season in the RUF cup. I didn't make it but I have a few changes planned to personalise it a bit more. (I have permission from the maker)

I think all the custom paint jobs are done with www.tradingpaints.com

Download the car templates and then you can either upload them to your own iRacing folder (only you will see them) or use Tradingpaints and everyone will see them.

They're a bit complex, but using the grid in the paint files helps a lot. As an example, this (with the grid left on as I was checking alignment);

Looks like this (some slight differences);

when you upload it. Really worth while downloading some other peoples paints and looking at their 'flat' files and also how they display on the car ingame. Lots of good stuff in the iracing forum painting section.

Here it is with the masks left on so you can see (sort of) which bit goes where. Lots of trial and error.

I just use Tradingpaints to host, all the painting etc is done in an external editor.

The easiest way is through a program called trading paints that works along side iracing to let you use free to share designs people have made.

You can download vehicle templates from iracing and use photos hop to edit them, it's not very easy though.

Edit: beaten to it with a more detailed answer.

Trading paints is great. Really helps with the immersion. I wouldn't bother with their online paint editor though.

I will repeat what has been said above and suggest photoshop. Then look at some of the tutorials on Youtube on how to do it. Its a tricky art to start off with, and half the battle is working out how to get your custom paint into the game but that is the genius of Tradingpaints. It does it all for you once you upload the file. The other brilliant thing it does, is constantly run in the background and download any of your fellow racers customs paints (only if they have uploaded to Tradingpaints). When you have something like the Williams you end up with a load of 2014 based livery's from Ferrari's to Caterhams. The Lotus 79 have a real following as well, and when I joined a session of 20 odd cars a few months ago, all where in various period liveries. It was awesome.

Not been racing much myself due to a 4 month old baby recently arrived, but still enjoy painting my own schemes. I've put a few below. (My AWD Ruf is currently the most used paint for that car on tradingpaints and somewhere close to 100 drivers are using it in sessions)

A few of my schemes below:

Mostly though I use some of the amazing schemes shared by other painters as they tend to be loads better than mine hehe

I've hardly used iRacing since they added the oculus rift support last year. Once I used the rift, I just couldn't race on a monitor again, but the original rift was too low res to risk using in a race. I'd have dropped from an A to a D license in a matter of days!!

As soon as they bump that up to support the new rift I'll be back on it though. Vast improvement and definitely race-able. The only problem is that it ruins any simulations that are non-vr.

My DK2 is sat on the floor at the moment. Sold the DK1 as for iracing the resolution just wasn't good enough.
Considering LFS as that has DK2 implemented already.

Race by Matt Stanton, on Flickr

Having a very tough time on Road Atlanta this week, can't seem to get a good race going without stupid errors and a spin. In the shot above though I was side by side with that guy for nearly half the track, very intense!

One more crap race and I'll be under 3.0, in B licence so I'll probably take it alot easier and go for the safe approach.

I am very envious of you Rift guys, I've seen a few decent videos on YouTube and it looks incredible, I can see why you'd never go back!

Yep - looking forward to this.

I hope, along with racing, that near constant practice session(s) are run, open to any car...

Always worth looking in the hosted sessions for additional races/practice sessions if you wish to have other cars present, otherwise just test with your choice of car.

Great news! I think multi car practices will be a good experience too.

I've been busy painting again

Been a few years since I was active on iRacing. It seems to have moved forward a lot in that time.

Not sure I agree with the Nurburgring as a race track. If iRacing is the same as it was a few years back, that will empty all the other series for a while as people try to master it.

How busy are the races these days? Are all the series having official races 24hrs, or is it still a bit hit or miss?

What is the SOF rating average for races these days?

I can't answer for the service as a whole but from what I see (RUF C--Spec cup) I only very occasionally struggle to get an official race at a certain time, and usually the next one onwards will fill up. If it's busy I don't fall into the top split yet, most of those guys have upwards or 3000iR. Mid range SOF tends to be about 2000 or so. I think more popular series like GT3 have a much easier time finding races and bigger splits.

I personally don't think the other series will empty out for this track. It will best fit endurance events (and upcoming driver changes too) in my opinion and generally those run alongside a 12 week championship. Like the road warrior series for instance.

3000+ SOF is pretty strong.

I didn't have enough time to take part in the PRO series and it seemed most of the higher rated guys were concentrating on that.

The SOF in many races was quite low. I'm sure my iRating is around 5500 and the dangers were I got very little for winning and lost a huge chunk if something went wrong.

It was a lottery where you'd join a race to find the SOF was very low, then later on one of the competitors was lucky enough to join a small race with a higher overall SOF, yet the race was much slower.

Points scored in the championship were too random.

Driver changes have been coming for a long time now.

It's hard to keep up with what is going on since iRacing don't allow you to view the forum when your subscription has expired. The other sim racing forums I used to use have completely died a death.

I've promised myself I'll get back into things but I never seem to get the chance. It will happen at some point.

I've found the whole series I'm in to be very clean for the most part and even with lower ratings people are still not dive bombing you at every turn or causing pile ups in T1.

Driver changes are coming in the next build.

An irating of 5500 is very very high, some series organise a high SOF race especially for guys like you who would benefit the most from it.

I thought I would bring this back for its Bi-monthly thread revival!

Is anyone still racing?
Tried driver swaps?

I've done 3 Endurance team events now, the long get being a24hour @Spa.

Driver swaps seem like a great addition, just a couple of small kinks to work out.

Still dipping in and out, mainly waiting for my new Fanatec wheel to arrive though. Should get some more time over Christmas.
