Limited supply and a target of high end gamers who spend $$$ on funky coloured motherboards.

Add in a probably superfluous xbox controller and remote, a couple of freebie games and a nice case and you have the ideal thing to gouge your market with.

Remember they said it would be 'around' $350 not long ago. The headset might be on its own...

Why the sensor/stand? the DK2 didnt need it

I still cant pre order. Its saying May for delivery now.
That's a long time in the tech world... I wonder if they might just happen to release the specs of V2 in July..

What I find amusing is the HUGE amount of publicity surrounding this and it seemingly took ages to develop and now it finally launches there already others in the wings ready to steal it's thunder. In my mind they've taken far too long bringing this to market and may actually lose out because of that now the other manufacturers are readying theirs.

I'll wait and see what happens when the other two launch but as we have the PS4 it will be Sonys offering we will probably opt for, it would be a smart move if that also works on PC as well.

The PS4 unit is likely to be the mass market option, cant see it being more than $200 or something?

$599 is twice the cost of a modern console and a fair bit more than a good 1440p display

The biggest issue I see here is cheaper makes coming in but without all of occulus research and making people throw up all over the place and basically tarnishing the whole market to death

Exactly. Oculus themselves have said this initial adoption of VR is critical to establish itself, bad products/image of VR could set it back a long way in the minds of the public.

I'm definately waiting another 6 months, you'll be mad to order one without at least seeing what Vive has to offer (unless you can afford both, obviously!)

Hmmm, not sure as I do see VR as the next step in gaming. Cheaper kits won't affect it's popularity, it'll just mean the good ones will stand out, a bit like having Nike trainers instead of Dunlops.

Between this and hololens I think it will get established, it makes more sense than having multiple or big screens.

Oculus' research has f all to do with the motion sickness, that's between you and your inner ear; I'm largely immune to sea-sickness, many an hour spent on the Irish sea watching others spill their lunch. 30+ hours in Elite Dangerous also no problem but 2 hours playing Half Life 2 and I was a queasy mess, the disconnect between actual and perceived motion was only initially disconcerting yet eventually enough for me to swear it off for ever.

For me I would rather have a nice monitor that I will use 100% of the time rather than Rift that I might use 15-20% of the time.

Another reason why I think the vr will do well, kids with consoles will use it as their sole viewing device.

I had the same reaction. Elite - fine, HL2 - after 10 mins feeling distinctly unwell. All I can think of is that Elite is more abstract in terms of what your brain is used to, whereas HL2 is much more realistic so your brain notices the disconnect between visual movement and what the inner ear is telling it so it starts throwing (up) error messages.

I think it's the disconnect, I was the same.

Elite/driving/flying games = ok (they are seated experiences)
FPS or non-seated experiences = queasy

In ELite the motion on screen was largely what your senses expected, up is up, left is left, it rolls with your inputs, I was happy for hours on end playing with no ill effects.
The perceived environs become your reality, if you pan and tilt in a narrow corridor without your body moving, your brain/inner ear has a disconnect between what you see and what you sense and it's inevitable you feel queasy, hard to put into words but the more confined the virtual space the more the disconnect manifests.

Reddit Oculus is indeed rather amusing at the moment with a predictable combination of nerd rage and Stockholm Syndrome from people justifying the price on behalf of megacorp Oculusbook.

£499 isn't ridiculous when you consider the cost of top end graphics cards, though, and it seems a lot of rage is coming from people who (mistakenly?) thought this was going to be a mass market product. It is as niche as top end graphics cars and Extreme CPUs etc.

Would've thought though that Facebook would be keen to use some of its vast amounts of cash to get these kits into a dominant position in the market. As it is there's plenty of competition waiting in the wings. Kinda feels like Oculus/FB have squandered an opportunity by selling it even at cost (if the CEO tweets are to be believed)

Only thing that I found odd was the inclusion of the xbox controller, that just about anyone either has or can easily pick up themselves separately. Just seems like padding.

Didn't know about the price speculation that preceded the final release so tbh it's around what I thought it'd be.

Have I pre-ordered? Nope, I'll wait for everyone to check it out first for me... that and I'm not 100% sure my 770 gtx would do.....

Using an X-Box controller puts me off as well.

When I got a PS3 (biggest waste of money I've ever spent), one of the main reasons why I thought it was a pile of ste was because of the laughable controller. It's sat under my TV for 9 years and is used as a DVD/Blue Ray player. I must have played games on it for less than 12 hours in 9 years or whatever it is since it launched.

Since an X-Box controller looks just like a PS3 controller and they are expecting you to use that demented thing for control then that's another reason for me not to bother (I realise that's a minority view of course).
