No, it's just that currently you have to remain in the OR 'walled garden'. Seems a bit short sighted to me, but hey. What do I know.
That's not quite true - you can play games on steam etc. The only ones you can't play yet are the room-scale ones designed for tracked controllers.I play the steam version of project cars and it works fine (but doesn't come with as many cars etc as the oculus game of the year version).
Ah apologies. But you can't use the crossover software that someone has programmed... well, you can add he is now in an arm's race with OR, but officially unsupported. So it's games designed for OR only, rather than 'a VR headset'. If you follow. Anyway, it's made the internet very angry. Unusually :P

The extra cars are just the DLC that you can buy on Steam it's not an oculus exlusive thing. It's cheaper to just buy the GOTY edition bundle on steam than it is to buy the basegame+DLC by a few quid, I have all the DLC, £40 for all of PCARS and £45 for all of AC and you have everything you need to fulfill your virtual racing driver fantasies (might need another grand for a decent PC, wheel and racing seat though lol)...all i need now is the VR headset. I'm hinting strongly to SWMBO that Santa should be nice to me this year , fingers crossed she'll get the hint.I play the steam version of project cars and it works fine (but doesn't come with as many cars etc as the oculus game of the year version).

Hiya, sorry not sure what you mean there is a guy that has coded "revive " which is a programme that allows games from the oculus store to play on the vive. You're right that oculus blocked the first iteration of this software.Oculus owners can always play oculus games and steam games.
Vive owners can always play steam games and can play oculus games provided revive doesn't get shut down...
Tonsko said:
Yeh, there is now an arm's race between the revive software and OR, because they want to shut that capability out. Contra to palmer's rhetoric pre-buy out. Hence internet rage.
Yep :-) I'm not sure Oculus want to lock out Vive owners though - they want to sell as much software as they can out of their store. I don't really know how the triangle of Oculus/HTC/Valve is going to shake out.Apparently at trade shows there were tons of companies showing HMD displays and other tech...so other companies are racing fast to get into the market. IMHO selling hardware will get pretty hard, pretty quickly and the profit will be in the digital store front.
Thought I'd post up some comments after having the rift for a little while:-
1. Lucky's tale is a great platforming game - completed it last night and enjoyed being in the world and Lucky felt more like a real companion than in a "normal" game.
2. Kids love watching Henry and doing a bit of Lucky's tale - not idea how well they can see but they love being in the world. Only let them play for little 5 minute sessions.
3. I can't wait for touch. I think once VR matures, "sit down and controller" games will be a reasonable slice of the VR market but i think tracked controllers and being able to move around, really differentiate VR and give it the initial wow factor when demo'ing it to someone.
4. Eve valkyries menus and tutorials are really weird. I can get in to play a game but the menu selection and descriptions just seem confusing. Felt some mild sickness when doing barrel rolls and loops around asteroids but luckily it's very manageable.
5. Adapted driving sims are amazing when driving with a wheel..but they need some refinement when out of the car. Project cars menus are quite cluttered and the view re-center button is well hidden. Euro truck simulator is great in the cab, but try reversing with an overhead cam or something - it's really wacky.
I think the best seated experiences will be wheel/HOTAS things where your controller is much more aligned with the virtual world. Driving games with a wheel are awesome!
Don't really feel the love for this moving\walking around lark that most seem into. Yes it might make it more immersive but I play games to chill out on the couch, walking around would feel like too much hard work. I saw a demo of someone playing a FPS game where you had to walk, crouch shoot with a rifle etc, it looked positively exhausting. I'd probably try it for 5 minutes then go back to the controller when the novelty wore off.
As mentioned before if I went to a lazer tag arena with augmented reality to play that type of game I'd want to do the whole active thing, at home it just seems very gimmicky, you'd need A LOT of space so good luck in your average house unless you are loaded. It seems like the type of thing that is cool to show off to your mates or younger people would get a kick out of but I imagine the long term novelty of it would wear pretty thin.

My Rift arrived today. I will be sending it back / ebaying it in the next couple of days if you want it please shout now.
It was £499 as I got the free shipping. Onward posting will be what ever it costs.
Re the running round thing, yes it can get a bit warm but that's half the fun and most of the games do allow you to take a break between levels where as with games like COD you are playing round after round with no gap.

Good luck sending it back.. they are being a total PITA.
They told me to accept the package and use the enclosed return label to send it back.
I did, but there was no return label in the box.
They then told me they will send me one but only if I have not opened the box!
I sent a reply saying you told me to use the "ENCLOSED" label... how do I do that without opening the box.
Anyway the sent me a return label now but sent another email saying they wont refund if its been opened... er right-o.
So I put the transaction in dispute with my CC, for what use that's going to be.
I am going to drop it off with UPS today and then see what happens I guess!!
I am wondering if a lot of people are doing the same and they are trying to put people off?

Hopefully you will find they will sort it for you.I had to do this 6 months ago with a company I bought a watch from online, it was faulty but they refused to refund me or replace it (even after I'd sent it back as they asked). I put a dispute in with Visa (I've never done this before) and it was all sorted out. Visa put the money back onto my card, then asked for all the correspondence etc. Then a few weeks later I suddenly got an email from the company asking me if I would accept a new replacement watch, which is all I ever wanted. I said yes, my watch arrived and a few days later the money was taken from my card again. So Visa did sort it out for me.

No one has said a word on this for almost 2 months, so, why's that then ?
a) No one has actually bought one / had it delivered yet ?
or
b) People that have one are so amazed they haven't stopped being plugged into their VR for long enough to say how fantastic (or not) they are ?
It seems odd that there was massive excitement and now it's all gone very quiet (including myself I must add; I was very keen to get a VR do-dad, even to the point of spending £1300 on a new PC, and yet somehow I now can't be arsed with it all).

Personally for me the tech isn't quiet their yet and it's a bit too expensive. Don't get me wrong I am very excited by VR, just not excited enough to be an early adopter. When they release the better version 2 of this tech I'll be there with bells on.
Having said that, depending on the pricing of the Playstation VR, if it's not too extortionate I may use that to dip my toe in.

I think the sales projections were way off. There was talk of millions of units being sold in the first 12 months. The reality is (IMHO) that VR headsets were very popular with a small fan base - but as time has gone on new customers are few and far between. Basically the majority of those who were going to buy into VR did so in the first few months. a) No one has actually bought one / had it delivered yet ?

As for the Rift itself, I returned mine and went with Vive. For me it was just a better experience with room scale.

Very good points there. As for the Rift itself, I returned mine and went with Vive. For me it was just a better experience with room scale.
I was going to go for one but several things have put me of the rift:
a) The price. Well, if I wanted one I'd pay it.
b) Facebook's involvement. I'd not want anything to do with something they are behind.
c) I can't have a go with one first. I see PC World have them in store for you to try (Vive, not Rift), but only in 4 stores in the UK. That seems to me they are not really committed to selling them.
d) The controller. Come on, Xbox thumb-stick crap. I think that put the tin lid on it for me. As soon as I saw that I lost instant interest.
As you say, the base is most likely not growing and so it's not gaining momentum and becoming mainstream. Also, when I look at the games available, they all look like their main aim is to show off the VR aspect of it as opposed to the game itself (I might be wrong there).
I ordered both the Vive and the OR (I also have a DK2 and previously a DK1). When the Vive arrived first I binned off the OR for controller reasons. First being it was a pad and secondly I already had one, I didn't want another.
The Vive and room scale is amazing, but one major caveat is you need a lot of space to not break immersion via the chaperone system. That might be ok in US homes but in the UK space is limited. I use mine in a converted double garage and would like more room.
The games in the majority are test beds and experiences rather than proper games, there is some interesting stuff around but you are right it's more about the VR than the game. I think that is because it is almost a new medium, people react differently and locomotion is a problem.
I think VR's niche will be sims. The feeling of immersion when in a car is amazing.
I hope it's got enough penetration to keep the ball rolling, it needs increased resolution and reduced PC performance requirement (or for normal PC's to catch up).
I have ordered a PSVR but I'm wavering on keeping the order live, resolution will be lower so they will need some amazing games to sell it.
