I heard that they had production issues. Something about the manufacturer of one part going out of business and they were finding it hard to source another manufacturer who would do it for the same price or something.

Anyone else heard this?
That was the DK1, which is probably why they've gone ahead and announced this, as they said multiple times previously there wouldn't be a DK2.

Well, I had a bit of a bonus and I sold my DK1 for a reasonable profit so nothing to lose.

I've ordered a DK2.

Very tempted to pick up one of these.

Is a 'low persistence OLED display' of higer resolution than the original development kit? One think I heard people complaining about was the low resolution.

And do you actually have to be a developer to purchase one or can anyone with reasonable computer skills buy one and make it work?

I'm not a developer, anyone can buy one.
Some games already have support built in (Half-Life, iracing, the new Elite, Euro Truck Simulator to name a few) there is plenty of freeware and experimental stuff available as well. Have a look here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_games_with_Oc...
You just plug it in and install drivers. There is some software to test it's working properly and you are away.

DK2... it's starting to feel like one of these never ending development products that survives off people buying dev kits.

If it's not out for this Christmas then it's taking too long plain and simple. I won't be surprised if they are pipped to the post by a company who doesn't mess about trying to make things 'perfect'

Imagine being able to see ads of 5yo boys with photoshopped abs that doctors hate in 3D! What an age we live in.

Well that's an OR off the shopping list hehe

$2 billion would seem rather a lot of money given the likely market.

So just like YT it'll be ramming adverts down at you between games, and it'll be less likely you'll turn away... given you can't hehe

I'll wait and see. They probably needed it to compete with Sony and it's too early to tell what Facebook will want with it. It could purely be a business move.

I worry it'll put game developers off simply because of the perception of Facebook as company or a beautiful product (I've not risked this much disappointment since waiting 10+ years for the Enders Game film) that had a lot of people excited will be buried in crippling licensing and legal bull...

Like you say though, we can only wait.

God I do hope they can keep it uncoupled from having to have an FB profile. Not sure this is the best buyer for Occulus I have to say frown

Actually - this really depresses me as I think it has potential to kill the Rift as it had been intended. On the plus side - rumours that Razer are also developing a VR kit excite me. Notch (minecraft) cancelled his work with Oculus as a result of the Facebook deal but the CEO of Razer tweeted him to say "Think we can help out, will be in touch"

Be good to have competition especially in light of the Facebook sale.

Interesting. A bit of wait and see I think.

Sony would only be a rival if they don't restrict it to ps4 only.

My main reaction to this is that I was looking forward to this as a real game enhancer, a proper piece of gaming hardware. Facebook know nothing about games and are indifferent to them at best. You can already see in Zuckerberg's speech that he sweeps straight past the concept of gaming and focuses on making it the future of social.

That is not what I wanted in the Rift, nor is it I suspect what most of the backers wanted - there'll be some pretty pissed gamers around the world at the moment.

That's why I'm keen on the idea of a Razer version, at least you know with them it'll be focussed on what Gamers want not what Social / ad-placement is best.

A real shame frown

Sony could take a big chunk of the market now, if they come out soon and say that Morpheus works on PC.

I would have thought Google would have been a much better buyer considering what they're doing with Google Glass.

This is always going to be hit or miss. A bit like 3d tv, some people just dont want to wear crap on their face to enjoy something in their own homes.
