I think its settled down now. Im just in the process of bringing the pc indoors as I've always used it sitting in my garage when I used to smoke. But it gets too fecking cold through winter so hopefully Ill be on it more in the evenings again.

After playing BF4 on and off since release on full low settings and 40 FPS, I've just upgraded to a GTX 970. I can't believe the impact. I've gone from low @ 40fps to ultra @ 150fps and it's just a completely different game. Everything feels so smooth and precise and it's like I'm playing in a film. cloud9

I'm hoping to get some games in again over the coming weeks- given that I haven't been online since just before the launch of Naval Strike, am I going to have eleventy-billion gigs worth of updates to chew through?!

Also has anything major been changed in any of the recent patches? The last time I was online was just after they changed the Javelins to make them vaguely useful, so I imagine it's a completely different game again by now... hehe

Had a couple of rounds to ease myself back into it last night, and aside from being somewhat rusty it appears that I now have an issue that if I wish to join a new server the narrative at the bottom of the screen on Battlelog goes through the usual steps- 'joining server', 'loading level' etc, but then it reaches 'playing on BF4 sever' without actually taking me into the game.

Clicking on the BF4 icon on the task bar does nothing, nor does 'alt-tab'. The battlescreen shows me as having joined the server, but my screen just stays on Battlelog. The only way around it is to cancel that game, reload battlelog and rejoin the server.

This works because it never does it on the first server I join, it's only if I quit out / end the round, and attempt to join a different one that it occurs. Rather annoying as I never had this issue before!

Does anyone more tech-savvy than myself have any idea what might be causing this?

Yeah battlelogs got afew issues cause of the recent usual crapy update
Just wouldn't be the same if they made a update that worked lol
I sometimes get failed to join server close bf4 through task manager but if wait a few moments it turns blue & still connects

Funny you say that actually- a couple of times it had got to the point where it said 'playing on BF4 server' but I couldn't actually get it to switch over to the game. However when I closed down Battlelog (either through task manager or just using the close button) it would suddenly take me straight into the game?!

At any rate it's ok whilst I'm on the same server.

I actually started playing a lot of infantry-only rush last night, really enjoying it as a change of pace from Conquest.

Currently spec-ing up another upgrade for the PC at the mo though, it was originally just going to be a hard-drive expansion but I've now got talked into going a bit more full-on.. hehe

My 6-core 3.2ghz cpu and Ati 6970 card is starting to get a bit long in the tooth to be fair, even if it does still run BF4 like a dream.

Yeah was thinking same I'm running the 8150fx with 2x7970 ghz but ran 3dmark and it says my cpu can't keep up with Gpu so maybe that's why I'm gettin lagged in bf4
Was looking at either Intel boards z97 with rog formula vII and 4970 but the formula boards got a stupid m.2 not built into the board and u need to take the boards armour off to fit it in
Was also looking at the x99 5960x with the Rog extreme or the wS cause of the built in m.2 and the 16x16x16x16 expantion slots for gpus
The z97 only runs 16x8

I am trying to do mine on as much of a budget as possible, and avoid having to go water-cooling.

My current thoughts are to go with the 8350fx cpu (at the limits of air cooling) which will also require a new MOBO too, looking at either the Gigabyte 970A or the 990FXA for an extra £30 odd.

Then the plan is to put in a 120gb SSD to run the OS, with a 1tb hard disk for everything else. Then I'll do a clean build with Win 8.1 (a mate has a small stock of win-8 upgrade packs so it would save me a few quid) which should take care of my ever increasing boot-up times.

The only thing to sort then would be the GFX card, with the most likely option being the R9 270X. I can't really justify going for anything better as in reality the only games I play other than the Battlefield series are at least a year old when I pick them up cheapo on Steam!

With how quickly gfx cards fall in value I couldn't stomach paying a load for a card that I'm hardly going to get the use out of before it's halved in value- I mean my 6970 is still handling all the games I play on max settings without problems.

Should hopefully be able to get that sorted for a shade over £400, but I'm going to hang fire and see if anything pops up on the Black Friday week deals- its a long shot but if I can save a few quid it will have been worth it!

Incidentally my cousin recently upgraded from an identical system to mine to the 9590 black edition running full water-cooling as he discovered his previous 6-core 3.2ghz cpu was actually bottle-necking his system on games like the new Wolfenstien, despite only running the same 6970 gfx card as me.

I was quite surprised that once he'd upgraded his cpu, the old 6970 ran Wolfenstien no problem (albeit not maxed out).

This was part of my reasoning for prioritizing the cpu upgrade ahead of the gfx card.

If I can find a good deal on one I might, but it's £40 odd more expensive than the Gigabyte 990, and well over double the price of the 970. And I am quite tight when it comes to buying computer parts! hehe

What benefits would I be getting with the Sabertooth over the Gigabytes? A couple of people I know both run the 990 UD3 and swear by it.
