Haha yeah it is this that is putting me off the idea of putting together a second one with the spare parts!

A mate has offered a decent price for the old motherboard, cpu & gfx card (along with a 4870 I found in the 6970 box) so that will pay for the second hand Sapphire R9 290 Tri-x and a bit towards the new SSD so can't complain. All being well it should be going together Thursday evening, I'll finally have enough HD space to download the other BF4 dlc... woohoo

Yeah I'm still in 2 minds about the x99 5960x and where to buy from cause most pc places test and keep all the good CPUs to them selfs or do I just get from Amazon but very pricey for the mobo cpu n decent ram would cost over 1.5k including the pcie ssd card only reason I'm considering x99 is cause all lanes are 16x instead of 16x8x

Anyone know if I can get 4k from 2x7970ghz editions?

It was my understanding that ideally you'd have twin 4gb gfx cards to support 4k resolution at any reasonable performance, but even then we are still a way off 'affordable' technology that would give us 'good' performance at 4K.

However regarding the 7970s I've seen a few people saying that the main problem with those slightly older cards (the pre-R9 series) being 'frame time variance' when running at very high resolutions, causing an unacceptable amount of stuttering. This is apparently due to the tech that the older GPUs use to crossfire.

Edited to add: This is the best explanation I could find http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/oced-797.... My mate who I'm buying my card from was explaining it in more technical detail last week when we were discussing card options & 4K but my wallet had already told my brain 'no chance' so I didn't take it all in...

Started building my new system just after 6pm yesterday evening and finally got the last Windows 8 updates installed at 1am- but everything worked! woohoo

Looking forward to seeing what performance I can get now with the 4Ghz FX8350 cpu and R9 290 tri-x oc card.

I also discovered I had ordered a 2tb Seagate Baracuda, not a 1. So it's also quite a jump in storage space going from a 250gb hard drive to a 250gb ssd + a 2tb drive- should be able to have more than 8 games loaded now hehe

With Battlefield, am I going to have to re-download the lot again or does anyone know if it's possible to bring across the game files from my old hard drive?

That was my suspicion too, already migrated my Steam stuff but I want to stick Origin (Battlefield is the only game I play through it) onto my SSD to see if it will help with the loading times.

Will be finishing work early today so will start the mammoth download later- might be done by Monday...

Yes you can. Start the download in origin on the new drive so the folder structure is created, exit Origin completely. Copy across the folders and the re-open origin. Origin will check the install and files, redownload anything it needs and Robert is your mothers brother.

Ah cool I will give this a go. I haven't started yet as I thought I'd give Wolfenstein New Order a go first to test out the new system- started downloading from Steam as I brought it a couple of weeks ago (but never downloaded)- almost 4 hours later and it's downloaded 10.3gb of 40.7... hehe

I finally got around to doing this last night- worked a treat thumbup

I am loving the benefits of having Origin on my SSD- the level load times are a fraction of what they used to be biggrin

Sadly I dont play as much these days. I moved my gaming PC into the range of the kids and so they have an expensive vid card and tons of ram to play Minecraft!

Sad times! hehe

I haven't got much gaming time at the mo (despite comprehensively upgrading my PC around Christmas) and I'm also massively behind with a ton of other games that I wanted to get through- as an indication of just how far behind I am I finally started playing Borderlands 2 on Tuesday...

Ah... Oops started playing GTA5 on PS4 and have hardly sat at my PC since!

Might have to fire it back up!

Haven't played for more than an hour or two here and there since GTA5 came out. Then I bought Elite Dangerous and then Batman AK (which I haven't had any issues with at all!) so overall you'd be lucky if I've played more than five or six hours in the last two months.
