Back on the subject of the game, I have a lot more hard figures for mission payouts now. Cheers Norfock, Petesnas and Kahonies for helping 
There's really only one conclusion to draw; there's not a lot of difference in payouts for missions which take the same length of time. The basic figure is a bit higher for some missions (the old higher paying missions, generally) but ranges from $8,400 to $11,400 doing them solo, on hard, in a time of between 4 and 6 minutes. It's worth your while waiting for 4 minutes to pass before finishing any mission because payouts drop pretty sharply for 3m 59s and quicker - but who times missions? Even when gathering data I kept forgetting to start my stopwatch, and guesswork isn't all that good when there's a very sharp cut-off at 3:59
RP figures are not quite proportional to payout but increase/reduce with time in the same way as money does. With the 25RP per kill some will be much better than others anyway, but that's not included in my figures (too variable). You're generally looking at 1400-1600 basic RP (solo, hard, 4-6 mins) plus any from kills, plus bonus for playing with at least one crew member.
And for anyone wondering how this fits with the payouts of $26,000 and 4,500RP they get from some missions; that's the multipliers for you. Do it with more people (not necessarily crew) and you get more money; take longer and you get more money and more RP. You just didn't notice that it took you over 15 minutes
So, join any mission in the sure knowledge it won't be like one of the old mean Gerald or Simeon ones which earned you less than you spent on ammo. And there's no benefit in rushing.

Exactly - though some of the easier missions, such as Blow Up, are a bit too simple and you'd have to actively wait around in it to get the extra money. Taking over 10 minutes to do Blow Up, with 3 other people, would give you $19,470 (or 10 dollars different; I haven't sussed quite how Rockstar choose to round numbers up or down yet but it always ends in a zero).

As an addendum to my previous post about money and RP, races still seem to me the best way to rank up. If you just do 4 minute races on your own you get 3,000RP (and you can sit just before the finish line to let the timer reach 4:00.00). Doesn't make much money but you can replay so loading times are minimised. Pretty dull though.
However, invite randoms to race and beat them and you get much more money and RP. I got about $14k and over 9000RP for winning the Coquette Classic race (Under the Wing, I think it's called) in the event playlist. Only took 3mins as well
