New PC racing sim - Assetto Corsa
Discussion
I dunno really.
My best experience in driving is probably in GT5, in the right cars with 'road' tyres (N1/2 iirc)... not too much grip, but not like driving on glass.
Amazing sounds, visuals, graphics, FF felt great.
Assetto Corsa might be more realistic in some ways, but it's less realistic in others.
There has been bashing about GT games in the past, and rightly so. GT4 was really odd in some behaviours. But GT5 was solid imo.
OK AC might have XYZ physics blah blah, but AC also 'simulates' an MP4 12C with springs and dampers and not hydraulics as per real life.
AC is just another generalised simulation, with excellent bits, good bits, bad bits, and complete omissions.
If the balance is good for you then it's a winner
But from my perspective it's not that much better than lots of other stuff out there, because the details are not actually that good, just like games like Forza or GT... the cars are not exacting copies of reality, just generalised versions.

Given that I generally only ever drive the single seaters in AC we may quite legitimately have different views of it
I'm interested by what you say about GT5; I've played all the other iterations of GT and found them very unrealistic indeed in a multitude of ways, but I guess it's completely changed for GT5? I remember an Evo feature on GT4 where the developers stated that to add a new car they just need a few photos, a sound clip of the engine and its weight.

FWD car, stopped, full lock on the steering, full revs, dump clutch, and the back end would come round as if it were rwd!
Most cars had the case where a stiffer rear ARB just made it understeer more, rather than oversteer more. That tuning system felt a bit like say NFS 5 where stiffer ARB just added grip at that end, and so did stiffer suspension, so you just set max arb and stiffness front and rear for best lap times
GT5 seemed to change things dramatically. Going from PS2 > PS3 probably allowed a much better simulation to be used for cars and tyres.
I've not done really in-depth driving in there to try infer what is going on, but simply from the seat of my desk and through my FF wheel, GT5 feels and reacts just as 'right' as I'd expect from driving any other game/sim out there... along with all the stuff GT does so well, like graphics and audio which immerse a great deal too!
I'm sure if I dig into GT5 I'd find issues, but I know that after brief digging in AC I've found issues too.
It seems like I'm being overly critical, but when it's put on a pedestal of being absolutely amazing in terms of physics and accuracy, it's going to attract close scrutiny and sadly it falls short in lots of detail areas
In general terms it's very very good, but so are lots of other car games we've seen over the years

Most modern sims in Rfactor 2, Pcars and AC appear to approach it differently, where buy they create a car buy building a ground up model with real running gear, mass, tyre models and try and make the real values work in the digital world and GT and Forza and alike create a digital world and try and make things behave kind of like they should in the real world.
Its why AC has been in the making for (anyone remember netkar?) 10 years effectively and why they have many bugs and issues to overcome because it is so hard to replicate the environment. just look at Pcars, Rfactor 2, AC's (still changing) and Iracings tyre models, they are incredibly complicated and still evolving, the end result is really rather good though.
AC's sound is bloody awful still though!
Very much looking forward to their pork pack, 917/30 on full boost will be interesting.

I was a big fan of Netkar. The FF1600 was fantastic, and it's a great shame that car hasn't survived into AC - it was all I ever drove!
I'm enjoying the 6 cyl 250F in the latest AC pack by the way - what an absorbing and lovely car to drive I'm trying to chase the top time at Spa, but I'm still a way off.

AC is over simplified in a myriad of areas too.
But does it matter? Maybe not.
The really important bit is the authors attention to making the car 'feel about right' given the limitations of the simulation.
The GT physics engine has no doubt been refined for many years, since PS1 days to now on the PS4... and is simplified in many ways, maybe ways that don't matter, maybe in some areas it does.
Again I'm not bashing, just giving perspective.
AC for instance is praised at getting things right, but imo it's simulation of the LaFerrari e-motor was not correct. Even in simple ways the cars driving aids are simplified to simple on/off, rather than heavily integrated e-diff, e-motor, and esp related systems.
The MP4 12C suspension isn't simulated as per reality at all. It's completely wrong and generalised.
AC may 'feel' better or more right, but it's very likely in some key areas still very generalised or completely wrong vs reality in some cases.
I've still bought it, and enjoy driving in it, and have all the DLC so far, so I do believe it's good.
I'm not sure it's gonna be another £10 DLC Porsche good though haha... I'm slowly getting skeptical of throwing money at them when they don't seem to progress the core of the game too much any more... hmmmm

Bought this on console - can't wait until 26th for it to arrive
Anyone else getting it on console (PS4 in my case)?
I've had it on pre order for about 3 months now, can't wait!Anyone else getting it on console (PS4 in my case)?

Mine in the post, coming tomorrow (PS4 version). They've emailed me some code to use with it. Can't even remember ordering the damn game.
Hope this is worth getting the driving rig out for. For some reason I didn't get on with project cars, felt like it was going nowhere.
Same here. Sadly Amazon always deliver after 6 to me and I'm in all day until 6 Hope this is worth getting the driving rig out for. For some reason I didn't get on with project cars, felt like it was going nowhere.
If you like driving then it'll hopefully be worth the hassle and the wait It's pretty much the only game or sim I play on the PC, and I can't even race online! Since the first Beta version it's been just me driving round for the fun of it for several hours a week, and I've never got bored once. Plus, I only drive a few cars, it's not like I make full use of it, and I never race against the AI either. I figure that a game's got to be pretty good if that's the case.

Looking forward to some PS4 reviews of this comparing against Project Cars.
I'm hoping the normal road cars feel better as I thought they were awful in P.Cars.
Anyone got it early and can shed some light?

Quick review: Not a patch on Drive Club, Project Cars etc for graphics and menus but Oh My God you can throw the cars around and they feel real!
I was just driving a BMW M1 and getting the arse end out and its amazing! The wheel feels great straight away and I didn't have to spend hours messing in the set up like Project Cars!
You can drift the cars and catch slides - not like project czars which feels too edgy in this department.
Loving it so far!!
