Is there any way to make your companions stick with a certain weapon. And do they have their own ammo stocks? I've equipped Piper with a decent heavy pipe rifle, and she'll hold it for a few minutes but seems to revert back to her 10mm pistol before long. She's still a useful ally, but she'd be better if she'd equip a heavier weapon. Is this a balancing thing, and can I make her stick with my choice?

Edit: Cancel! Seems you have to provide them with ammo stocks, but they'll default back to their preferred weapon for which they have infinite ammo when they run out of whatever you've given them.

She seemed to respond best to laser or plasma weapons. I hid in the diner and took pot-shots, admittedly not on survival level.
Really like the sounds of the weapons in this game. Each sounds distinctive and though some are weak, they still sound powerful. My favourite so far has been the laser pistol and my .45 sniper rifle!

Also met two legendary characters last night. The first was a feral ghoul, luckily though I had thrown in a Molotov before hand and inadvertently blew his legs off so he was easy to kill. Next was a raider but I was ontop of a bridge sniping so he never even got near me smile

Got my sniper rifle owning now. About 140 damage I think, .50 cal, long scope (need Science perk for night vision) suppressor.

Plus 60% damage from Rifleman rank 2, chance of knock-down + 25% headshot accuracy from Sniper, 3x sneak attack damage from Ninja.

Yeah - pretty effective biggrin

Rocking this outfit: Not the best armour ratings, but enough for my style of play. I keep a Hazmat suit on my just in case too.

Ah, that'll be what I'm doing wrong.
Have also given Piper a dog collar and a sequin dress...

It is a good gun, what I do is collect all the ammo (luck setting helps a lot) I can find then sell it and buy .50 from the dealers

That's consistent with Fo3 and Fo:NV - a companion has infinite ammo for their signature weapon, and if you give them anything better than you have to give them ammo for it too.
In the case of Fo3 and Fo:NV you had to keep an eye on the wear too or else the weapon would wear out and then break.

Haven't tried any of the companions other than Codsworth, but so far he's a beast! And hilarious. Kind of worrying such a bloodthirsty robot looked after your baby however.

I kept dying all the time and getting into unplanned fights where I would use all of the ammo I had collected for a mission. Then I discovered the weapons workbench, with a few little tweaks you can virtually double the damage any weapon does so I'd take a look at that if you're getting stuck.

I haven't really found ammo to be an issue to be honest, I do have 6 guns which I use with 5 different ammo types though so that might be helping.

Another thing to consider if you've got the resources is to build as many industrial water purifiers as you can. Any excess will get placed into your workshop and you can sell it on.

Nearly 2 weeks since launch and I finally got to Diamond City (at a heady level 10) and quickly retreated back to the NW corner of the map since stuff was killing me quite easily - I wanted to get there to unlock it, but it's clear I'm massively under levelled to actually do anything useful in and around that area

Tried to do a side quest that involved liberating a water treatment plant and that was my first exposure to the super mutants. Erm, no. Having died a few times (those suiciders are complete sods), gave up on that and went back to exploring in an effort to level up a bit (need to get to about 15 or so). I didn't seem to be inflicting much damage to them at all. There was one that was a complete bullet sponge, perhaps I'll come back in my power armour or something.

Found the ration bunker and my first couple of legendary raiders! First one dropped me an armour piece which sadly isn't as good as the current combat armour I'm sporting but the second gave me an irradiated pipe pistol that doles out 50 rad damage per hit, now that will be useful thumbup

Some gunners dropped an incendiary laser pistol too and a night vision scoped sniper, so well worth going back to mop up the locations I had yet to explore

Still yet to get around to settlement building and providing water for Sanctuary, but I can't get excited about Sims-a-like gameplay to be honest hence why aside from building a couple of turrets and blocking the Sanctuary bridge access, I've done nothing with any of the settlements (low Charisma build also means no supply lines for me)
What on earth happened to the day head start you had, Moog? laugh

I've just hit level 35, and have somehow racked up two full days of play time according to my save file. In true Fallout fashion, I headed off to Diamond city at at level 8 or something equally low-end, and didn't get there until I was level 16, with goodness-knows-how-many side quests and other diversions en route, including a few encounters with enemies clearly way beyond my ability to handle at that point in the game.

Weapon wise, I've had a few staples, but my current favourite two are a legendary sniper and shotgun, both of which have the "crippling" modifier on them, which increases limb damage by 50%. Needless to say, it's a great perk to have, the sniper one-shotting everything north of Diamond City, and the double-barrelled shotgun wrecking anything that gets too close for comfort. Typically, I'll aim for the head with the sniper, if they're in shotgun range I'll go for the legs to stop their mobility. Sniper damage output is currently showing at 115 (rank 3 in Rifleman, converted to .50 rounds), the shotgun at 140. I do have a Gauss Rifle (though I'm not sure where I got it from) and a full-auto shotgun, but whilst the former is monstrously strong, ammo is scarce and the full-auto shotgun suffers from a real lack of impact to go with its admittedly ludicrous rate-of-fire. Worse, even with a full agility build I can (oddly) only manage two shots with it in VATS compared to the six of its double-barrelled sister.

My armour hasn't changed much, I've got some legendary BoS pieces, but they're largely wasted as I spent 90% of my time in power armour. It may be cheating a little, but its the only way to offset my lack of strength and endurance and I've got a decent supply of fusion cores to ensure I needn't worry about running out. Running about on the south edge of the map has proved trickier than expected though, the basic mobs being tougher and the big boys (Deathclaws etc)) tanking huge amounts of damage and resulting in me going through stimpaks like they're out of fashion.

My play time is 2d.9h.48m and Level 26 I think..

I always keep my companion geared up though. Used Preston for a while and gave him modified leather armour and a 80-damage Sniper Rifle.

He's now manning up operations while I'm away, and I have Piper with me, again with leather armour and Kellogg's Revolver, modified slightly.

Harpoon gun, in the game but left out by Bethesda for some reason as yet unknown. A bit like all the cutting room floor mod for buildings and locations not activated but found and put back into Skyrim.

Replaces the railway gun.

Noob question time!

After getting a shiny new PC, I'm looking to get back into gaming after a few years out. Should I just go straight into Fallout 4 or would I get just as much (or more) enjoyment going for Fallout 3 or New Vegas first (obviously cheaper options!) to get an idea of the gameplay / style / story before moving on to 4?

Thanks

Theres no *need* to play F3 before F4.
But if you play and love F4, it will look a bit crap (grpahics-wise) going back to F3 afterwards, which is quite dated now.
Its a cracking game though (F3). make sure you get the GotY version with the expansion packs, as the basic game does have a crap/abrupt ending.

Had a nice little moment last night. found some Synth's attacking a Raider location. Got to the final room to find the last few synths including the leader battling the last few raiders. Raiders had a couple of turrets so won easily. Was nice to watch it unfold then kill the last few raiders and get the loot!
