Like I said before, there's taking it slow and then there's doing it my way biggrin I don't get a huge amount of time to play the game, so I'll always be behind the curve compared to the more dedicated gamers.

I just tend to wander about stumbling across things, discovering locations and not really doing the quests, so levelling tends to be quite slow but it's fun nonetheless.

Noob question time!

After getting a shiny new PC, I'm looking to get back into gaming after a few years out. Should I just go straight into Fallout 4 or would I get just as much (or more) enjoyment going for Fallout 3 or New Vegas first (obviously cheaper options!) to get an idea of the gameplay / style / story before moving on to 4?

Thanks
Theres no *need* to play F3 before F4.
But if you play and love F4, it will look a bit crap (grpahics-wise) going back to F3 afterwards, which is quite dated now.
Its a cracking game though (F3). make sure you get the GotY version with the expansion packs, as the basic game does have a crap/abrupt ending.
That's a very good question.

With Fallout 3, it was such a novel idea. After 30 mins or so getting acclimatised to the game in the vault, you then get released into a massive open world with so many features and things to look at.
The world just seems so well done and complete, the flyers, posters, art, 50's style atomic cars, robots etc
Everything is aluminium streamliners, it's such an immersive world, but you can only experience it first once.

I think you can just drop into any one, but you'll find that the first game you play in that world will set the benchmark.

That's a fair comment.

One of the things that I loved about Fo3 is that, although the game starts very slowly and forces you to experience the various stages of childhood as you grow up in Vault 101, and then the events that lead to you having to leave, it did set the stage for that seminal moment of stepping out of the Vault for the first time and experiencing the post-apocalyptic world. It was really quite a magical moment. By contrast, the start of Fo:NV was a little lacklustre and the start of Fo4 feels positively rushed.

As you say, the first game you play will define how you see the Fallout world which is why I would recommend anyone who hasn't played any of them to play Fo3 simply to experience that. I'd love to be able to experience that again fresh, but as you say it can only be experienced once.

Got my sniper rifle owning now. About 140 damage I think, .50 cal, long scope (need Science perk for night vision) suppressor.

Plus 60% damage from Rifleman rank 2, chance of knock-down + 25% headshot accuracy from Sniper, 3x sneak attack damage from Ninja.

Yeah - pretty effective biggrin

Rocking this outfit: Not the best armour ratings, but enough for my style of play. I keep a Hazmat suit on my just in case too.

Behemoths.

F*ck me, they're a trifle tough, aren't they?

Yeah.

I'd wager they're the toughest thing I've seen in the game so far, they make Deathclaws look like pussy cats. Assaultrons can be bloody tough too though - I ran into one near a police station for Nick's personal quest, and it one-shot killed me, even at level 35.

How to make companions wear normal armour? I gave Piper a couple of pieces, but she just wouldn't wear any.

You have to equip it in the trade menu. Talk to them, opt to trade, and one of the options will be to equip weapons/armour from there.

Indeed. Varies from platform to platform, of course, but actually reading the options you are given can yield dividends. And I am as guilty as the next person for that, I can assure you. smile

Make no mistake, the graphics are pretty crap. Although if you're on PC then there are a fktonne of mods that can improve it and make it better. There is an easy 200+ hours gameplay there if you want it and haven't experienced it before.

And, as others have said, if you have not played Fo3 and Fo:NV before then do them before Fo4. Because it'll seem like a retrograde step in graphics otherwise. Obviously.

Happy with my weapon trio now. The rifle is less powerful than the .45 one I had previously, but I fancied a swap to an energy weapon so I'll see how it goes - need about 100 range to be ideal though.

Right then, I just got to a point where you have to make a decision that will alienate you with one of the factions.

After the mission "Blind Betrayal". I managed to pass all of the speech checks, which probably helped drag it out a bit longer. The next Brotherhood mission removes at least one faction option.

Finally bothered to get around to (at level 27) clearing the Fort out. Took 4 shots with my "Kneecapper Fatman" (20% chance to cripple legs... if it survives a fatman, I think I need it to be slow to chase me!). I generally hate mirelurks though. I've now used the concrete-block floor sections to repair the walls and there's only one entrance open for attack/trading. Exactly how a fort should be. Struggling with size cap though I think. When I can get more stuff together for generator manufacture I can lose my flotilla of Medium generators. I really like that it was mostly wired up for me.

I also have the place generating 80 water for me at the moment. I think water's my main supply of caps.

I found one randomly in the wasteland. Luckily I had my baseball bat so it wasn't too much trouble. bd went down in less than 10 hits on hard difficulty.

I did the same with the fort. Used the concrete to 'fill the gap', put a proper gate at the main entrance with turrets, blocked up that other back door.

Food and water are OK there, but I'm still in the 'red' for power.. I've got 4 wind turbines and 3 large generators, barely powering anything.

Need some more staff though, I've got 5 at the Castle yet about 15 at Abernathy Farm with not a lot of space for beds..

my biggest regret is losing my Righteous Authority, put it away until I ranked up enough gunsmith points to do it justice and now I can't find the bloody thing.

I do have Riva II .50 and the Overseers Guardian but want a decent energy weapon.

That sounds like one hell of a baseball bat!
