I think it may have worked better if when entering workshop mode, the view switches to that of a management sim - it'd be far easier to plan the settlement and work out where to site buildings, turrets, etc. As soon as you exit, it reverts to first person mode with all your changes applied.
Totally agree

Now that would be a great idea, could even have one of those 'Eyebot' things to provide the camera- that way you'd have a craftable/scavengable item that would be required in order to activate it and provide a bit of justification for it. scratchchin

And my use of the shack foundation at the Castle.

Front gate. There is no gap on the right just the blocks on the outside missing.

The other hole blocked

And using the shack foundation as a fast defence. Build one block, in the middle of a new settlement, ladder up for maintenance and stick one or two turrets on it. This one is at the Castle protecting the back doors.

Ps, yes I am a light fiend. I have darker nights installed so I need them. smile

^^^ I like that, very similar to what I did. Except for the side entrance rather than block it up I built an entire 'wharf' section out alongside the water with walkways/platforms going up to the height of the castle walls... I very quickly hit the settlement size limit there.

That's also exactly how I use the shack foundation as a basic turret platform, it's great to quickly setup improvised defenses as it stops melee attackers from hitting the turrets. thumbup

Complete Newbie here, just deciding whether to throw hours of my life at this game......

What are the basics of the game? Having never plated previous ones, will i have issues getting into this one?

Maybe you should read some reviews of the game and decide if it's the kind of thing you like?

Get the 'scrounger' perk ASAP, it dramatically increases the number of places you will find ammo, and also the 'amount' of ammo in each place.

I quickly went from having to really think hard about what weapons I was using, to having 600+ of every ammo type except for the rare ones (.44 , .308), but even those up to around 300 each and steadily increasing despite being used. I can't remember if I am at level 2 or not of the perk yet but either way it has made a MASSIVE difference to my ammo!

Think I have just under 4,000 rounds of the standard pipe gun ammo now...
haha, brilliant!

I'll try to do that then, I think I'll level my luck up to 2 and get the Scrounger perk.
Thanks for the tip :-)

It's a great idea which I will implement tonight. thumbup

Still haven't actually had more than one or two attacks on my settlements yet and I'm at Level 32 now. And all attacks I've had so far I've been able to deal with in person, so I don't actually know if any of my defenses are any good. But I will definitely be making use of this idea now.

Yep going to give this a go too as although I've not run out of ammo yet, I'm not exactly flush either and I sometimes die because I am trying to conserve ammo when I should be smashing that fire button as fast as I can.

Also my weapons and armour are pretty lame at the moment, my most powerful sniper rifle only does about 77 damage. I've done some basic modding but need to get access to the higher upgrades, I've got gun nut level 2 I think but some mods are still locked out, how do I get the option to fit suppressors for instance?

Make sure you build some trader posts at each settlement and assign a settler to each one. Don't asign all of them, as those without jobs will use the traders to buy food, water etc. Then from the workshop station, you will bottlecaps appear from the tax levied against the traders. Even my smallest settlement has a trade post.
Also, give them all artillery; especially the ones in the south. It's quite useful being able to call in a bombardment!
DMN how many caps do you get from the vendors? I'm currently farming Sanctuary and the farm to the south pretty heavily and making a good few caps from them.

Max when you say 'give them artillery' do you mean give the villages rocket launchers? I'm trying to up armour my villages with combat rifles etc. is it better to invest in RPGs instead?

Not my screenshot, I have one at Sanctuary high up. When you have taken the Castle and done some other housekeeping quests you unlock some meaty firepower.

Artilliary spoiler (just in case)

Use smoke grenades to mark a target run away and the artilliary will pound the area.

Suppressors require different ranks of the gun nut perk to fit them to different weapons. For instance rank 2 I think you can fit them to pipe weapons, rank 3 you can fit them to sniper rifles, rest of the handguns, and (awesomely!) the combat shotgun!

This is where I am up to, but to fit suppressors to combat rifles / assault rifles etc requires gun nut rank 4 which is a level 39 unlock! I think you will also need the 'Science' perk as well for some of the higher gun mods (and all of the energy weapon mods). I am currently rank 3 on both and can get all but the highest level modifications.

My armour is nothing special either, hence spending most of my time in Power Armour- also for the massive carry capacity. I've got a full set of combat armour pieces modified for carry capacity, but in all honesty I think it just looks a bit lame when fixed over the top of something. I'd prefer it if there was something that actually went with those pieces a bit better, or a custom full set that didn't look like you have simply stuck bricks to your legs & arms.

Consequently most of the time I am not in Power Armour I just stick to either the Silver Shroud outfit, or clean black suit. Rubbish protection, but at least I don't look like a cheap extra out of Power Rangers.

Do you know roughly what the range of the artillery is? I've only got one at the Castle so far, but don't find the range to be great..

Yes, I'm much the same. Generally when not in Power Armour, my character tends to favour either her Vault 111 jump suit or a pretty blue dress (which gives +2 CHR). For guys, I believe that the "shirt and slacks" outfit also gives +2 CHR.

Since the Silver Shroud outfit is still marked as a Quest item and can't be dropped, she occasionally uses that too when in need some actual armour and not in her Power Armour. Which is painted Hot Pink (as mentioned earlier). smile

Yeah that is a benefit of not running armour, the Clean Black Suit is either CHR +2 or +3, which I team with either the black bowler hat or black formal hat, both of which give an additional +1 CHR. This combo coupled with some grape mentats gets me almost 50% discount at traders vs when in my normal armour! hehe

Excellent thanks so my next tasks will be to level up gun nut and science to level 3 to allow me to tinker. thumbup

I tend not to use the power armour at all to be honest as I prefer the more subtle approach but most of the other armour is pretty crap as you say. Perhaps I need to break out the Power Armour a bit more when I find it tough going.

From Wikia: "The range of the artillery is approximately 5 squares on the Pipboy map, and increasing the number of pieces per settlement increases the bombardment time when used."

I hardly used Power Armour in F3 or NV, but in those games there was loads of excellent combat armour / recon armour variants etc that all looked fantastic as well as offering decent protection. The combat armour in F4 is basically just 4 small blocks that fit over your limbs and one for your chest and frankly just looks a bit crap, and like it wouldn't offer much protection at all unless you got hit in those exact places!

Again though the mods will sort this so I'm not too bothered smile

Modding will get ridiculous when you open the Workshop and build settlements anywhere on the map. Also yes - bird's eye view is essential!

I have managed to get some tasty layered armour added to the Minuteman General's armour using the More Armour Slots mod.
