As I understand it, you don't need him in order to complete the DLC but he has an interaction with one of the main NPCs of Far Harbor and you miss out on a lot of backstory of both Nick and this NPC if you don't have Nick with you.
Hmm, maybe I'll go and fetch him if it's not too late.

BTW, Shipbreaker, as bulletproof as it is, is nothing compared to Red Death. I won't spoil it, but you better be ready.

Not seen either of these characters yet, but looking forward to it. Still indulging the Atom dudes at the moment. Also, running it solo as I didn't know about the Nick connection but I don't companion anyhow generally speaking

I'm about to go visit the atom lot. I might nuke 'em. For irony.

Seems I've missed out on this encounter due to closing down a side quest without doing (or even knowing about) a couple of optional quests - I wish they would make some of these things more obvious as I don't have a save to go back to in order to try this again mad

I did the initial quest given by The Mariner of course, but even after I spoke to her again, no further quests appeared. So I did the two non optional quests in "The Changing Tide" and turned them in and this closes it down. If you didn't do the two optional quests given by The Mariner (that didn't appear for me), then the Red Death encounter is out of the window

You do have to go out of for a day and back to Far Harbour for extra quests to trigger. If you have then I don't know, however you're not missing much

Can you return to the mainland for a while and then go back to Far Harbor? I'm running out of Rad-X and forgot to bring either a Hazmat suit or my full tricked out leaded Power Armour.

(I know that there is a suit of Power Armour on the island but I'd rather pop home and get mine if I can)

Yes, there is even a Commonwealth fast travel icon if you're not on survival and don't want to see the boat animation play again.

Which is useful when your settlements keep getting attacked.
I suppose I should have picked up some power armour last time I was back - I rarely wear it though.
Built a decontamination arch on the island to deal with (frequent) radiation issues.

This is the bottle in the background, got it today. Ready for this year's Blackberry Gin home brew.

Found in The Commonwealth

You're right, apologies. Having hit that point now, I thought you were referring to a final encounter or something. I personally couldn't be arsed with the fifth puzzle, so I used a "cheese"

I can't post a link at the mo due to stupid iPad behaviour, but search Youtube for puzzle 5 submitted by user "Father" subject Easy Solution. Followed that and was done in under 2 mins albeit with repositioning of some blocks compared to the video

He recorded it on PC, I'm on PS4 btw

Anyone else feeling that the puzzles are all a bit "Portal". But not as good.

Yep, and very un FO4 to my mind. Puzzles 1 to 4 are straightforward, but 5 just went nuts to try and hide the Marine Armour

I'm playing this with my Jake Jones character - the one I created for my 2nd play-through who is BoS through and through. So that ended predictably.

I need to go back and play through with my original character who sided with the Institute.
