Only in terms of game mechanics. Base capturing, tagging enemies, wild life interaction, free roam etc.

The link is a generic one, but one quite a few people have made.

It's not meant in a derogatory way; it's taken some good bits from other games, polished them and blended them well.

I was just about to say that - there are links but they are generic, and quite common across 'open world games' like these nowadays.

MGS is unique in many ways and that's what makes it stand out and work so well smile

It's also quite Splinter Cell-y, or modern Splinter Cell anyway. Which is a good thing, as I loved those games.

MGSV really is fking excellent. I'm only on the 3rd mission, but already it's got me hooked. Fulton'ing downed bad guys is ace!

Very different.
There is a review covering the difference between the console versions here http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2...

How do you capture bases & can they be done outside of normal missions?

I've taken out the dish (with a grenade) and turned off the other box thing with a blue light on it, but that didn't seem to give me the opportunity to call in the chopper to that location.

Is there something I'm missing?

I am still really early on in the game though (just done the side op to grab the interpretor after doing mission 3) so I might not be far enough in to liberate bases properly yet!

To 'capture' the base, you must kill all the enemies located within it. You don't 'keep' it as the base will repopulate with enemy after a few hours.

In terms of creating a new LZ; destroy the large trucks with radar dishes on top. Once destroyed, they are gone for good.

The communication network can be wiped out by destroying the equipment with the blue light (usually located inside a building) or taking out all of the mini dishes with the blue light boxes. This will regenerate though, once the enemy move back into the base. It's handy to stop them raising the alarm.

Ahhh, that makes more sense!

I wasn't sure if it was a far cry style of once you've captured the base it becomes "yours", which I thought would be at odds with the story.

So now I know, If I want to go loud, try and take out the communication bits first!

Just done mission 13, game gets good around mission 10 onwards. It's definitely like those first 9 or 10 missions are purely to set the scene and get you used to the game. It's proper metal gear after that biggrin awesome

Loving this game. Done up to mission 9, then mission 11 which auto-triggered to get Quiet cloud9

Should get D-Dog grown up soon.

Done loads of side-ops too, the pace really seems to be picking up overall in terms of recruitment, base development and revenue generation. The Combat Deployment system isna great way of getting income, reminds me of the shipping side-game in AC: Black Flag.

I'm the same with capturing everything I see haha, although when my staff roster was getting full, I was focusing on only capping soldiers with at least some 'C' stats rather than all E's.

Quick tip for the side-ops 'Extract the wandering Mother Base soldiers'

When you're close to them, go into your iDroid and find 'Love Deterrence' cassette and play it out loud on the speaker wink

Smashed out a good few hours this weekend, much to the dismay of the GF. Lots of "one more mission!!!" hehe

Just about to start mission 14/15, grabbed the legendary gunsmiths and now have weapon customisation. The game does get a little easier once you've unlocked that; the silenced tranq sniper is a game changer.

Been doing a lot of missions with D-Dog, who is exceptionally useful for stealth missions. I've unlocked Quiet, but not used her yet.

Most importantly, I've unlocked Cargo+ so I can now fulton out vehicles and the shipping containers. Stealing tanks is a lot of fun and fultoning yourself out on a container really helps when under fire.

A few things that I've learnt and have really impressed me with this game:

1) If you get the cardboard box wet (use it in water or it rains) it disintegrates.
2) Stunning/Tranq'ing a guard, who then falls into water/a puddle, will drown.
3) You can shoot power lines, which then cuts power to whatever they are connected to.
4) If you kill/tranq a watchtower guard while is operating the spotlight, as he falls, he'll pull it up so it points towards the sky. This attracts other guards.
5) You can replay main missions. This is really handy when you want to go back and fulton out some vehicles or specialists once you've upgraded.
6) On PC, you can drop custom music into the game folder, allowing you to play any music. Great for when you want your helicopter to play the Team America music whilst laying waste to the enemy smile
6)

Word of warning for those who haven't got to it yet Don't kill Sniper Quiet. I made this mistake and didn't realise the consequences. Fortunately I found out after a quick Google as soon as I killed her, realised my mistake, and restarted the boss battle

I've not played or even seen a MGS game since Number 2 on PS2.

THIS ONE!!!

Maybe the cutscenes aren't so pronounced when actually playing as opposed to watching a playthrough clip.
To be fair this is also what put me off some of the others too. I don't mind a good cut scene but the balance seemed to have swung too far over to sitting passively watching and not enough time playing, if this is more of the same I think I'll pass. I think on MGS2 the actual time I spent controlling my character before finishing the game was about 3 hours.
In terms of cut scenes this has the least of any Metal Gear game to date, MGS2 was riddled with them, this has a few at the start and then they come up once every five hours or so, lasting a few minutes tops. I've now played about 38 hours of it and rarely ever hear Kiefer Sutherland's voice. There is so much gameplay depth here it's unbelievable, I've been tranquilising everyone and snatching up bodies, vehicles and containers left right and centre, the guards are now getting wise and some are wandering around in full body armour with no gaps to shoot a dart through, so I'm having to resort to other tactics in order to take them out non-lethally.

Anyone put off by the looks of those early couple of hours should really re-consider.
hmmmm thank you Steve, yeah as said earlier I watched the first 3hrs and it seemed to be cutscene after cutscene etc etc .......I will watch a bit more and I'm definitely reconsidering it.

Thanks
Picked this up on Friday afternoon, about 12hrs on it and Holy st!!! this is the most amazing single player game I've played in a long time.
lvl'd up the Personal Coms & uplift balloons along with a few other things. Plus got a sniper rifle now.
Enjoying the Sub missions so taking my time on the main plot, about 12hrs and 3% so far.

Found the little dog and uplifted him...how do you interact with him and other people when up on the motherbase?
Struggling to get my head around the whole Motherbase side of the game tbh

Whilst he's a pup, you can't really do anything with DD except kick the fk out of him! Eventually he'll grow up and he'll become a "buddy" to accompany you on missions. It's either him or the horse, but you can switch between the two mid-mission.

I don't quite understand the Mother Base either, but you can develop it and build new speciality bases to enhance your and your team's skills, especially intel on the enemy. I don't do any shuffling around of my staff, I just let the game automatically do it

I'd recommend you do take at least some control of it, if you go into Staff Management and click in R3 (on PS4, would be the right thumbstick on XBox) you can then choose to let it auto-assign staff to the unit that suits them best. Otherwise the game will put a genius-level surgeon for the Medical team into the Combat team if the Medical team is already full, by getting it to auto-place them you can make sure everyone is where they are best-suited.

Another thing you can do, is if you're desperate to have a new upgrade and don't have a good enough R&D team, is to temporarily shuffle over members from other departments to get it developed, then re-assign them.

Also, if you find a staff member that is perhaps equally strong in R&D and Medical, but has a skill that means they are best suited to the R&D team (gunsmith for example), you can assign them there permanently by moving them to the R&D team and clicking in L2/LT which will lock them there.

I was under the impression (from what I've read anyway) that the auto-assigning option will put someone in the best unit; if the unit is full, it moves the lowest ranked person to the waiting list or into another unit that suits them. If they are in the waiting list for a certain amount of time, they get dismissed.

So if you have a A+ ranked medic, but the medic unit is full, Auto-assign will remove the lowest ranked soldier (an E or D grade) out and move your A+ one in.

It does, which is what I was trying to get to in a roundabout way, what does happen is that if you've got a full Medical team and 5 spaces left in your R&D team, with no-one in your waiting room, you then fulton 5 new recruits, it will put those in the R&D team because the space is there, without intelligently shuffling the existing staff around. It's only once you go back in and auto-assign them that the shuffling happens.
