Verdict so far:

Epilogue made some uncomfortable viewing, and the violence has certainly escalated. In MGS games up to 4, the violence was almost cartoon, but in 5, they've really taken it up a notch, it's pretty brutal!
Where you up to?

I'm up to mission 9 but they feel like starter missions to try and break you into the game etc... I still don't really understand why I'm doing what I'm doing yet whereas all the old MGS games were very story orientated. Maybe I've just not got to it yet.

Exactly the conversation I've just had with a mate(another MGS nut). I'm also not a fan of the credits running after each "mission".

I'm about 4/5 main missions in and done 6/7 Side ops, I'm my own worst enemy though, As I've been restarting each and every time I've been spotted and not killing anyone. Trying to get "S" rank on every mission. Managed it on every mission apart from the Epilogue.

Hoping to get a few more hours in it later.

I retired my console about 12 months ago, too old and PS3 superseded. But, I was a massive MGS fan and notice this has been released on PS3. I'm tempted to fire the old box up for one last fling. Anyone playing the PS3 version and what will it be lacking other than a bit of graphical shinyness?

What a kerfuffle. I preordered mine online from Game a month ago - Day One Edition for PS4 with Strategy Guide bundle for £62.

It was dispatched Thursday at 09:30. Parcel arrived yesterday, opened it when I got home from work, and it's just the book. No game. And the included invoice only shows the book for £20, no game on there, despite being charged for the 'bundle' and emails and the website saying it's all been dispatched.

20 minutes on hold to Game's customer support who eventually hung up on me with no answer, messages and posts to their Facebook page with no responses.

Absolutely fuming. Luckily, the local Tesco megastore had half a dozen copies in stock, so I managed to pick up a Day One Edition from there, Still £40 out of pocket though. I've always made an effort to support Game over Amazon and the supermarkets but after this I won't bother, I'm cancelling my Fallout preorder with them too.

ANYWAY- the game. Amazing, and I've only played a relatively tiny amount. The prologue was fantastic, really dark and tense. I'm up to the point now that we've seen in the preview trailers - having just arrived at Mother Base and let loose into the world.

The map and environments are stunning, cutscene cinematography epic as always, the stealth action is superb - I'm generally a slow player when it comes to stealth games, but I actually like stalking an area and enemies for a while, learning their routes, the infrastructure, entry and exit points - and MGS caters for this sort of patient, methodical gameplay.

So I'm thoroughly impressed even with the small percentage I've played so far. I wish I'd booked today off to play it to be honest, it's gonna be a long day at the office!

Oh and the strategy guide is amazing. Some might consider them cheating, but I like having it at hand in case I do get stuck or I'm not sure where to go / what to do. I have one for The Witcher 3 too, and the level of detail included is mind-blowing, along with background stories, timelines, character bios, maps, artwork etc. I'd fully recommend picking one up, some inline bookstores or Amazon sellers have them for a good price. The Collector's Edition I have is the hardback version with a massive map and additional stuff inside.

Haven't had chance to play Online yet, I think the servers are a bit overloaded? Anyone played any yet?

MGSO doesn't go live until October 6th on consoles.

I've only done the prologue bit (which was a whole world of mental for someone who's never played an MGS game) and the first mission, which was a bit tricky as the guard changes make life awkward. 'Tis good though, and I'm going to enjoy it even though I know I'll have no idea what's going on. I'm just going to treat each bit like a separate mission and be damned how they link up. I'm already confused as hell anyway!

Just done the prologue which I found quite tedious.

Now on horse and the environments do look stunning! Can't wait to delve further.

Haha, I think I've killed everyone. Well apart from ballooning a few people. I'm a sucker for a storyline and that's where these games have always delivered. I'm sure it won't disappoint, I was just expecting it to have picked its feet up a bit by now.

I've got up to rescuing Kaz. Took me ages to figure out what I was supposed to be doing! I just blasted everyone's faces off, talk about stealth! (I'm terrible with being stealthy in MGS games, too trigger-happy)

I'm quite impressed with Troy Baker's voice acting of Ocelot

The missions are in the same format as Peace Walker.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the missions, I just don't understand how they tie into the story yet or why I'm doing them. The first 9 missions (which is where I'm up to) just feel like training missions to me with barely any story to back it up. Killing random commanders, extracting people for mother base, finding a weapon... Just like contract missions

Started playing this last night, the only MGS I'd played before was the demo for the second one (on an oil tanker I think) so I had no real idea what to expect.

I was thinking it would be about sneaking around, shooting a few russians & rescuing folk, not running away from a flying ginger fella, a massive bloke that is on fire and teleporting zombie type soldiers!

Got to mother base for the first time & called it a night as it took me 3 hours to get to that point, as I was taking my time, trying (and failing) to be stealthy when rescuing that bloke.

Still feels like I've no real idea what I'm supposed to be doing, there are a load of game mechanics that I've no idea how to use & the game certainly doesn't hold your hand in telling you what to do! - for example apparently you can roll when you are prone on the ground, no idea how to do that!

I've nicked a few tapes from guard posts though, so once I work out how to play them in the heli I plan on minigunning down an entire base whilst listening to spandau ballet laugh

on the subject of tapes:

has anyone listened to the conversations between snake and ocelot? It's mentioned that the giant bit of shrapnel in snakes head is messing with his optic nerve, causing him to see things that might not be there, I thought that might have explained the man on fire/those parasite ops soldiers, but other people could see them too, so I'm stumped as to what's going on there!

(the stuff in spoiler tags isn't really spoiling anything for people that have played the first couple of missions)

The reanimated soldiers are really cool, I love the way they twitch and move, bit of a Silent Hill influence there I feel.

Great soundtrack too!

The first page on the strategy guide is an article written by Kojima, explaining the structure of this game compared to previous ones, ie. this will be more episodic rather than movie-like, but should tie up the story as a whole.

What are the chances that that flying kid with the gas mask is a young Psycho Mantis, or at least somewhat related to him?

I really expected to like this game, but watched a Lets Play of the Prologue last night and it bored the arse off me.

The prologue is probably the worst part of the game, cutscenes are not very nice to watch, and the gameplay is boring. Once you get past all that it's worth it

I agree, can't really form a opinion of the game on that. It is very good, just taking more time to set the scene than I thought it would.

Sooner or later a story mission will be available, then you'll unlock three or four more after completing it with one of those being the next story mission. I think Peacewalker has something like 120 missions and only 15 or so were story missions.

It doesn't sound like a great way of doing things but it does have much more replay value. Peace Walker was probably the best MGS game up until this point in my opinion.
