That file's not on my system. Not to worry... I'll leave it running overnight.
If it updates all well and good.
If it doesn't it'll be deleted and never mentioned again.

I updated my Steam client 10 seconds ago so the service is definitely up.

I have a friend that detests Steam because he can never get it to run for more than 30 minutes without dropping out on him.

I would hasten to add that he is the only person I know that has this issue and built the computer himself hehe

If you're on win7 (looks like it) then run task manager>performance tab>resource monitor>network tab and see if steam.exe is listed, and if it's actually downloading at a notable rate (not the ~25 bits/sec mine is currently idling at)

Regarding offers. I thought I'd mention that WW2 FPS red orchestra 2 is free on steam for a limited time today.

So other than the occasional cheap bundles, which I'm guessing are largely games you've never heard of or aren't popular, is it better to buy hard copies then would you say?

Is the attraction of Steam that you can have games NOW rather than buying online and having to wait for it to be delivered?
Incorrect

Look out for the 'mid week madness' deals

Also when the summer/christmas sales come where else can you get 7 games for £40?

On xbox you'd get probably 4 crap titles or 2 good ones or 1 great for that.

I've not bought a hard copy pc game since 2006.

The drm and untradeable thing is a moot point to me thanks to the cheapness the most I've spent recently is on dayz (£19.99) but that's because I really did want it.

OK thanks for all your comments, interesting reading indeed. yes Unfortunately after browsing the site for a few mins and looking at a few titles I've now been locked out from clicking on anything. All I get is some sort of unauthorised user message. Can't download it either, same issue as the chap earlier in this thread. Not impressed so far.

What anti virus software are you running - sounds like a communication problem with the steam servers?

Can you download the .msi? or is it the "updating steam" problem?

Give some details and we'll try to help (the official online help is poor but there are a lot of kindly steam users around).

Humble Bundle has lots of good deals,eg 10 games for £2.99! Even if you only need 1 its still a bargain. They are all on Steam, some on Android too
http://www.bundlestars.com/
http://www.indiekings.com/p/bundle-tracker.html
eg Bridge it+,£14.99 on Steam, £1.83 here http://www.indieroyale.com/?source=indiekings.com

Also after Red Orchestra there will be Rising Storm for free too IIRC(currently free till Sunday,75% off & worth it)...IMHO a better game as it has FLAMETHROWERS!!!!

What do replies of this nature achieve? The OP asked a perfectly reasonable question.
