Game was pissing me off until I got the hang, best tip I can give is to spend 45 mins doing the farming of the werewolves to level you character a little. Also make sure you purchase Hunter Garb asap from Hunters Dream area, it's only a little coin...
I'm stuck in the first 'area' of Yarnham :/

I start at the lamp, go down the steps and kill the first three guys, then cross the street, through the gate and kill the 3 guys by the drop-down ladder.

Then it's either fight the big bd at the bottom of the street, or head up the road towards the bonfire and try to take out the guys in the street. Both options I'm getting destroyed.

I've got to 500 blood echoes a few times, so I've gone back to Hunter's Dream and bought some of the better gear, starting with the gloves, which I can't equip.

On one attempt I did did quite far, killed 7 or 8 of the guys patrolling the main street and built up around over 1000 echoes, then the group at the fire spotted and killed me, so my echoes were lost up at that end of the map.

It's just frustrating at the moment, I mean I do like the game, and I consider myself a decent player in that I always play the more 'stealth' method in RPG's and spend time stalking enemies and learning routes, patterns etc but I'm still failing pretty bad laugh

Use the options button while in game to bring up a menu. One of the layers is for the equipped armour. Select the gloves and it will bring up another menu showing what is available to equip. Choose your new armour.

I'm in agreement with most of you. This game is difficult, certainly compared to the FPS games I usually play, but after upgrading all my armour, figuring out the hit-and-evade attacking technique and no longer trying to horde blood vials, I'm finally getting the hang of it.

I'm trying to avoid any spoilers as I'm treating this like a solo Destiny raid and wanting to explore and discover everything for myself, but I think I'm going to have to give in to temptation as I keep stumbling across new groups I've not fought before and being insta-killed by them.

But the sense of achievement, even of not actually accomplishing anything so far, is far greater than any other game I've played to date.

Have you realized yet that you can recollect your lost blood echoes from either the point where you died last or from the beast that killed you? It took me a while to figure this out and it does speed up progression somewhat.

Yeah, when I got killed by the big monster at the bottom that street, I respawned and got them (a couple '100) back.

But I lost over 1000 at the top where there's a dozen or so enemies so fat chance of getting those back laugh

What a breath of fresh air this game is. It is driving me mad with frustration.

What I mean to say is - it's got the measure of me as a gamer, and that's not something I can honestly say has been the case with any recent games I can think of. Wouldn't describe myself as a "pro gamer", but I'm competent enough to pick things up and do well, and better than most (if I do say so myself). This game though.. it is brutally unforgiving and often maddening. I've had a number of genuine couch punching incidents..

I love that it doesn't hold your hand. There's no difficulty level, there's just "this is how it is". You can't beat that boss? Well, tough, do better. The difficulty seems pitch perfect in that if you fail you can go back to the drawing board, maybe level up your character a bit more and then try again.

I've had moments where I've got quite complacent with the regular townsfolk who once intimidated me, but I now just find as chaff, and I've got punished. I also had a moment where a reasonable big mob hit me four times in quick succession (stunlocked) and I fell down a ladder, killing me. Lost about 6000 Blood Echos then.

More than anything achieving things in this game feels genuine. In other games, ones with regenerating health or other hand-holding mechanics levelling up and getting better stuff just kinda felt "meh", because I didn't feel challenged anyway. Levelling up was just something that incidentally happened as I was playing the game. With this I'm hoarding all of my Echos, knowing that each new level will make a measurable difference to my gameplay.

I'm sat here at work lusting after potential new weapons or armours, it's been quite a while since a game has preoccupied my thoughts this much, and even longer still since I've been genuinely humbled by a take-no-prisoners game.

As someone else mentioned, just try and save up your blood echoes to kit your self out with all the new gear. The extra armor really does make a big difference.

I always approach the bonfire from the upper level on the right. Kill the first two beasts, then make your way down to the bottom and kill the last beast before quickly turning around to kill the ones that will catch sight of you and come up the stairs to kill you. After this make your way back down to the furthest most point you can and drop down to the lowest level of the far behind bonfire. Kill the two beasts there and then the dog behind the carriage. Try and hide behind the carriage for cover from the beast that shoots you whilst you take out the other remaining beasts. Lastly take out the beast that shoots at you from the upper level.

Not surprisingly the next part is even harder but I would just ignore that big beast that is banging on the door until you have leveled up a bit more. Take your time to pick off the smaller beasts instead of just going hammer for tong at them.

Hope that helps a bit as is clear enough!!!

I played it a bit longer last night - got to the bridge werewolves but died the first time and stopped at that point. Anybody taken the alternative route from the bridge? I had a look down there - looks like it was a sewer with rats but decided to tackle the werewolves instead.
Some decent armour down there:-

Another tip that made a big difference for me:

Early in the game you knock on a door (red lamp) where some hags basically laugh at you for be stuck outside on the night of the hunt...

To the left of the door are some objects you can destroy to reveal a way through to another part of Yharnam. This opened the game up nicely for me.

Cool - may wander down there next time I play.

I spent a few hours on it last night (actually, the entire evening!) and although I've levelled up a couple of times, stocked up on a few molotov cocktails and bought the (pretty rubbish) armour from the bird table guy in Hunters dream I didn't really get any further. I can now (usually) get to the werewolves on the bridge without dying - taking care with the crowd by the bonfire and trying to draw them away on single / pairs works pretty well. I did accidentally make it to the demon on the bridge - that was before I'd even levelled up - and got mashed pretty quickly.

I still think for a PS4 game the graphics are average - Dark Souls II was at least as good if not better looking. But I'm gradually getting into the game - I think I'm still at the "you're character is weak and pathetic and will get mashed by most things you meet" stage, but hopefully a bit more playing and a bit more levelling up will help. I think I'll try and see as much of the city as possible (sewers, and the drop down by the Hags house) before meeting the demon again. Then I might be a bit less pathetic when I get there.

Draw the werewolves back to the doorway down the steps, they can't get through, but you can kill them.

Bit more progress yesterday evening. Been down in the sewer which wasn't too challenging. Accidentally meet another boss - Lord something in the graveyard. Killed him second attempt so the levelling up is helping! Might go and tackle the one on the bridge next time I play.

ETA: well, killed the cleric beast first time but not sure why I bothered since there isn't anywhere to go afterwards. Have found a shield now though. smile

My first invasion. Invaded 2 guys in the Hemwick Charnel Lane.

Very good!

Getting invaded in Byrgenwerth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLO-WUKOg90

BTW, In case someone doesn't know. THe amount of insight you carry changes the game, some enemies have special attacks / buffs that they only use past 15 insight. If you want to see some very creepy things, get up to 40 insight.

I just beat the 3 bosses in the Forbidden Woods. Now doing some chalice dungeons for gems and trying to invade people.

Spoiler below for 40+ insight in Cathedral Ward.

This is the levelling tip for early in the game. Run from the Central Yharnam spawn point, through the gate on the left and up through the house, lure the werewolves back to the door and kill them, run along the bridge and kill the brickbeast and the crows and return to the start of the loop via the bell where the Cleric Beast fight was. Earns circa 1000 echoes per run and has given me a good strong character.

I found the second half of the Gascoigne fight tricky until I realises how effective the Molotovs are. If you get the music box from Viola near the sewers, apparently that can be used during the Gascoigne fight to stun him, but it also makes the fight harder as he transforms earlier and has more health in his second form.

Just about to go grab a PS4 - should this be one of the games I get? It's in most of the bundles, and I enjoyed Dark Souls (in a way).
