I still have no idea what the appeal of this game is. And I loved Elite back in the day.

A multiplayer game so huge and empty its effectively a single player game.
A game so huge and random the likelihood of finding interesting things is so vanishingly small its not worth calculating.

Give me a well crafted hand designed scripted game with a story please!

I see your point.

I have a very demanding job (despite my post count).

Sometimes I want to switch off. I tried MMOs (WoW, EvE etc) and they were time sinks against content and needed a connection. Minecraft also as single player (but too open sandbox for much of it)

I like the idea of a game I can play on a 2 hr train journey after a long day, or on a flight, or in an airport lounge for a complete brain distraction away from the news, email, etc - but without an MMO grind element, raids or a requirement to be with others and some open goals.

It reminds me of Elite, Damocles (ST) and bits of Eve, plus elements of Minecraft and Spore.

Does that make any sense?

Very good points from both Rob and Vaud.

I believe there are simple 'quests' like escort this ship, or collect X amount of ore from here etc.

The rest of the story is based on discovery, about the universe, about its inhabitants, about yourself and the centre of the galaxy itself.

so its half sandbox half story mode if you will.

When i first say gameplay of this i was like 'well that looks boring just flying around planets and stuff' but as more info has been released ive been more and more drawn in. I believe there is a huge back story to it all that Hello Games are purposely keeping quiet about.

Perhaps there's more interaction with other player if they're your friends online? I think it looks great, just a shame it's not in the Xbox, yet.

Aparantly, what we have seen has purposely been selected to not give too much away. The whole idea of the game is discovery, there would not be much to discover if we had already seen it.

I plan to live stream the game or at least make some videos. Why not check out the diversity other players discover and decide from there?

I guess like many, we should be intrigued by the draw of what lies waiting in the centre of the NMS universe.

I hope it's not a disappointment!

I agree with a lot of what you are saying PW.

im taking a gamble on this, I may not enjoy it. I got ESO with the same idea: "there's so much to do, I'm gonna love it!" But after around 4/5 hours I lost interest.

I'm hoping there is more to NMS than what we have already seen. I really want a huge diversity of planets/locations. Not just the same looking planets but in a range of different colours.

Like I have said, time will tell. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Amazon are usually on top with preorders, especially if you're Prime.

Otherwise just pop to your local game store or supermarket on release day - it won't be sold out unless you want a limited edition.

GAME are usually the best place for preorder bonuses, they tend to have exclusive stuff for most games upon release.

The downside being you have to deal with GAME (I'm not a fan).

PSN may have bonuses but then you're paying around 20% more for the game than elsewhere which still baffles me.

It's £49.99 from PSN (the same price as the standard version at Game) and includes a ship pre-fitted with Hyperdrive and 10k in game credits plus a few other extras (extra's that only come with the £69.99 limited edition from Game)

That preorder bonus comes on the normal version too I think, I've just been looking it over.

I'm trying to weight up what to order from where.. quite a few games out between now and Xmas with some good limited editions, plus that Nintendo Classic NES and maybe PS VR.

It always gets expensive from October onwards..

Any deals on the PC version? Steam, GOG and Humble store have it for £39.99, a mate said its on another website for £36 or 37, I think he said Green Man Gaming, but I'm not sure and I can't find it listed there.

Seems to be a variation on Elite with a massive universe and the ability to land on planets and explore them for resource gathering purposes.

The 'social' element is that every player has an identical copy of the universe (generated procedurally from the same seed) and gets to name planets and species if they are the first person to 'discover' them, there being some sort of central database server that is updated by the game. AFAIK there is absolutely no multiplayer per se.

I don't know if they will have any hand-crafted plot - the head designer has said something about getting to the centre of the universe being important so maybe the game designers have added an actual story/quests to follow once you get there.

I'm going to give this a shot, but I'm prepared to be disappointed. The idea sounds so good that the reality can't possibly match up to my expectations.

I'm hoping for some kind of Iain Banks story but fear it will be a little shallower...

I'm hopeful - just because it's was originally a randomly generated universe doesn't mean that they can't graft a really good story on top.

In one interview that I saw, the designer said that they had sent virtual space probes around the universe to report back on planets and such, to ensure that their procedural generation algorithm was working properly. So essentially they have an absolutely massive and reasonably realistic 'universe' created for them and common to all players. This frees them up to put a story/plot in.

In fact, the universe is so massive that they could release DLC with extensive new stories ad-infinitum.

If they just go with resource gathering and trading/upgrading in the sandbox then it's going to get boring relatively quickly, no matter how nice the planets are.

So is this just going to be space engineers but with persistent universe?

Was hoping for a bit more like eve online, but a little less hardcore.

Id love to read how the game mechanics work, the fight mechanics, before I spend so much money on a game.
