Found a humoungous gold deposit tonight. Took a good half hour to mine it - got 3500 units of gold, which netted me almost a million credits. Only problem was when I got to the bottom I fell through the world! Turns out the core of the planet is water so I ended up with an inaccessible watery grave, but not before I transferred all my booty to the ship smile
I had exactly this happen too (ps4) and the centre of the gold stash was indestructible.

On the whole I'm not impressed with NMS, though it is enjoyable to play. It could have been so much more than simple trading/crafting and chasing more expansion slots for suit/ship/multitool.
There are some genuine wow moments don't get me wrong, the sheer scale of it is mightily impressive, but I don't think that's enough to justify its £40 price tag.
I hope the devs get chance to flesh out this game as I feel there is lots they cut to get it to the shops on time.
Not off to CEX with it yet but it's close!

It's a shame the trading isn't a bit more advanced, but I suppose I've been spoiled with things like Eve or X3. I just like the idea of actually being Firefly smile

The mining on planets is a bit tedious to say the least and in all honesty the rewards seem a bit paltry for the time spent. That coupled with the 'mining' in space being pointless as huge asteroids seem to return very small amount of common materials.

I'm now just flitting from Atlas interface to Atlas interface as I'm finding discoveries in general repetitive on planets as there's such a small pool of 'locations' to discover and very little unique places. Those that are more unique do nothing!

25 hours in though.

The team who made it underestimated what was required to bring such a title to market, the scrutiny they would be under after and probably the bile that would be spewed by people forming their opinions negatively based on YouTube videos (made by people who make their money from YouTube who benefit from the publicity of a harsh review)
As if.

Unless they've been living under rocks for the last 20 years of game development history?

Have you seen any of the interviews the lead dev has done? I like what the guy is trying to achieve but I couldn't help the feeling that he was being either extremely ambitious, naive, overconfident or a mix of all 3.

I still love the game although my inner explorer seems to be getting the better of me and I'm not progressing that much story wise. I'm still on my first starship as it seems to be a good all rounder. I've killed every bd Pirate I've come across lately with no real dramas!

The only let down in my opinion is the lack of multiplayer. Everyone has been saying it. To make a game of this scale and not include it is just ridiculous. I know the chances of finding anyone are slim but at least give us that option.

I would also say the graphics are a bit of a let down too. But the basic premise and mechanics of the game are spot on in my opinion.

I've been waiting years to play a game where I can actually pilot a spaceship from the surface of a planet out into space and onto another planet without cutscenes and so on.

I've not seen anything.

But I know that anyone running a business of any sort to begin with, to then fall foul of industry specifics that anyone who has raised a finger to write the simplest bit of code, or painted some concept art, should appreciate!

Over-ambitious and naive are likely the culprits here.

I believe it's the old time vs quality vs cost triangle.

Sony have come in with money to cut down the time, but the quality has had to remain low.

If Sony had provided money AND time, we'd have something amazing.

The next 6 months of this game are going to be interesting. I can sense paid for DLC in 3 months hehe

Interesting review.

I think it nicely conveys the hype, anticipation and expectation that has been set up, and then failed to be delivered.

The game looked a lot more in depth in the hype I must say.

It makes you wonder, when it all finally does arrive, what the total price of the game will have been... after all the DLC has been added to the price hehe

I'm fully mining this planet as best as I can - I'm now on over 2.5m Units.
I will re-fill my inventory and continue this process until I get bored or I have 10m (I get about 2m per full delivery) so will need another 3 or 4.

I still think FS2 and EV Nova are the best 'space' games with a decent story.

They both make this game look a bit boring.

I see where they're going with this, but it looks like it needs a decent story to underline it all if it's single player, or a way to build real human systems ontop of it (even outside the game) if it's multi-player.

Game just shuts down.
No warning until it's gone then I get the Asus monitor pop up.
I've had that after (usually) about an hour of play a few times lately. Once or twice it's been after a few minutes. The last couple of evenings, however (i.e. after Friday and Sunday's patches) seem to have been more stable, I played for about and hour and 45 mins last night and it was fine, I logged off once I'd had enough for the night.

I'm enjoy playing this. Does require a certain amount of imagination but I like that. Got into a battle with five pirate ships last night attacking a freighter (answered a distress call) and survived.

That reminds me actually, during the space combat I got messages saying critical damage had been inflicted on my ship. I repaired the shields during the battle a few times (with carbon I think) and again afterwards but I still had this alarm going off in my ship. I couldn't see anywhere showing anything that told me how badly damaged the ship was, any ideas?

Top right corner is the shield level indicated by a solid white bar. and the ships heath indicated by 4/5 white squares. Im not sure how you repair the ship itself. is the shield fully repaired?

A quick review from me, and untainted by expectation as I didn't know anything about the game prior to playing it. I thought it looked interesting and was my second choice for my two "free" games in a bundle when I bought a PS4 at the weekend... I've played maybe 5-6 hours, and visited 3 systems so far. I don't suppose I'll play it too much more, as it's already boring and repetitive... Looks pretty, but the controls are really clunky - why doesn't my gun reload automatically when I've emptied the clip? Why do I have to go to a menu system to recharge the ship's shields mid-fight? Actually, I could cope with the switch to menu thing if the game paused while I did that, but it doesn't - painful. Then there's learning a language - you (slowly) get up to knowing 10-15 words, and get the gist of what an alien is saying - great! Then you have finally collected enough stuff to be able to warp away to another solar system, and those words you learnt are now useless - from what I've seen so far you find a different race, different language, and you start again from scratch. Snore.

It reminds me quite a lot of Elite from the 80's - there's not anything to do but explore and buy upgrades to your ship and gun so you can explore some more. That would be fine, actually, but they've made exploring and getting resource tedious. Give me a short cut to gathering resource, and a view of the solar system with a way to quickly jump from one planet's surface to another. Two hours into the game, I realised I was commuting to farm resource and sell it. I play games to escape from work, not to get another boring job in a virtual world!

On top of all of this tedium, outside of the objective to get to the centre of the galaxy by farming resource there's literally nothing to do that I've found so far - no meaningful side quests to pull you here and there, no story arc or background to the character to fill in - nothing. You can find little things that direct you to a crashed ship (pointless, it's wrecked and will cost more time and resource to fix up than it's worth) or to a ruin (to learn more words for a language which is useless the next time you warp away), but who cares?

If you're thinking about buying this game, do yourself a favour and pick something else. It's fine as a second choice freebie when there are no other games that catch your eye in store, but I'd be annoyed if I'd picked this in preference to, literally, any other game.

Did you read the text that accompanies the ruin or monoliths, before you learn the new word? They fill you in on the lore/background of the races you meet.

Also, I've yet to meet any other race than the vy'keen so all the words I've learnt are still useful.

I wasn't looking for side quests or hand holding/guided tours of the universe with this so it has exceeded my expectations. I'm about 50hrs in so far and only on my 3rd system.

Interesting, of you could pirate, trade, farming is part of the game not the entirety of its, its an exploration game, the point of repair the crashed ships is that they might be better than the one your in and worth the effort.

You learn words so you can talk to and trade with the locals.

The game isn't a sandbox but its about bettering your character, bettering your situation, development, surviving to explore hostiles worlds, that takes time and effort, everything is procedurally generated so who knows what you might find.

Im not saying it wont get boring fast as I think it will.

This is why games either need:

A story (single player)

Interactivity (multiplayer)

Or if you have no story in singleplayer, then creativity is important (ie, Simcity), or micro-management and creativity (Transport Tycoon, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Civilisation)

Cripes, even Transport Tycoon, Civilisation, or RCT, have scenarios to add variety and essentially 'missions' to the game.

This game seems really interesting. But they really need to add more to it to involve the player imo.

Like missions where you NEED a certain ship with certain features to beat it, which might allow you to jump through a wormhole to cut out part of a journey.
Or learning enough languages to then interact effectively with a repeating high-tech species that gives you higher speed ships, to give you a route to the end in different ways.

Sooo much potential. But they've released it Wwwaaaayyyyyy to early by the sounds of things frown

I did. Turns out I couldn't care less about the background, certainly not when it's doled out two sentences at a time. biggrin Glad you're enjoying it, but it's far too boring for me. That said, I found Fallout 3 boring and that actually had a story line!

Just remembered the thing that really annoyed me. Landed on a new planet, then died and respawned. Decided it would be fun to take off and land on top of, I suppose you'd call it a mesa. Too high to jetpack back up to, and turns out I'd run out of any kind of fuel and there was none available on top of this bloody rock. Cue me schlepping around for 20 minutes trying to find a landing pad so I could summon the bloody ship to it and recover the thing. Basic mistake on my part, obviously, and "realistic". However, I don't want realism in my games - I want to escape reality! The whole game is one massive grind without sufficient reward for going through it.
