There's a long thread for the Oculus Rift so I thought I'd start one for the Sony VR system. If you don't know anything about it this is a good video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7Q4Vf-HwEU

I was interested in the Rift for racing games but 2 things put me off:

  • The need to build an expensive PC to run it
  • The fact it was bought by Facebook

Given Project Cars is launching on the PS4 with Morpheus support, and Gran Turismo 7 will almost certainly support it too I think it's a better option for me than the Rift.

Is this going to be exclusive to the PS4 or PC compatible as well?

Either way it's going to be pretty niche!

Worth adding that they state the October release is only to build stock and a good game library (currently 100 named games and 230 separate developers working on content)

It has a 5.7 OLED display with 960x1080 per eye, 100deg FOV, 120Hz refresh with below 18ms response.

And to answer previous questions it has always been stated as PS4 only. I was reading an article at the weekend about VR type headsets and the developer in the article stated that due to the way the chipset works the PS4 is actually faster at 'graphic call out' when refreshing than most DX11 video cards at the moment. His words not mine.

Keenly priced compared to the other VR leaders but pretty expensive as a PS accessory.

I can't believe it's going to have off board GPU for that price so it's going to be interesting what Sony do with it.

To be fair though, the Rift and HTC are nothing more than PC accessories? And they are way more expensive. I don't think this can be called an 'accessory' and those not.

They are all accessories, I agree.
Paying the same as the console cost again for VR is a stretch for many pockets (not as much as the PC ones I admit). However, there are a lot of PS4's out there and for many £350 will be a drop in the ocean.
I hope it does well. It will drive VR for the masses more than OR or Vive on price/availability alone.

Totally agree, I think the VR is going to sell massively well and will have a far bigger audience. My neighbor has ordered the Vive and whilst I can't wait to have a go there is no way I could even think about that much money on a headset!

I've ordered an OR.
Mainly as it was £200 less and I know it works with iracing which is uncertain for the Vive.
Like the idea of room scale VR but don't really have the space.

I might see what games are available on PS4VR when it releases and get one of those as well. Should be able to move it on at xmas if it's not much good so no major loss.

as someone with monocular vision I have a vested interest in seeing these things fail, and fail they will. They will be confined to the gimmick bin in no short order just as 3d tv, 3d films and the original virtual reality.

So because you will not be able to use a VR headset you are 'confirming' that it will fail for the rest of people who can use it and will enjoy it? You have a 'vested interest' in VR headsets failing just because you can't experience it yourself? Wow, you really must be fun at parties

Somehow I think that when they finally launch and sell millions of them you will still find someway to 'prove' it's a complete failure wink

Current estimates from financial estimating firms are putting the VR market at being worth around $1billion in 2016 (Based a lot on the two big names involved, Sony and Facebook, pumping money in to development). That's $700million from hardware and the rest from games and other VR 'experiences'. They obviously didn't speak to you though, Sony and Facebook could have saved so much wasted money if they had winklaugh

ps. I have a 3D TV and there is loads of content available for it and new stuff available all the time. It's great being able to enjoy an immersive 3d experience when I team it up with 5.1 surround sound headphones.

I personally think this will take off anyway. £350 isn't really that much - I paid close to £500 on my PS4 on release so I will definitely be picking one up.

I can't wait to have a virtual blast around Monaco in an F1, its going to be the closest thing to reality I will ever get and for a few hundred it quid seems rather worth it.

And to compare this to 3D TVs or the original VR is just silly frankly.

I bought a two game package if I remember.. I couldn't recall the price of the stand alone console but thanks. Anyway £350 still seems reasonable to me. I wonder if they will make it so it can be used on the PS5 though....

VR in a headset blows 3d tv/gaming out of the water you are totally there in the car or plane, it's an amazing experience. It's nothing like 3d tv/movies.

Reading a bit more last night, I think Sony have been naughty with the pricing as that £350 doesn't include the camera that is needed or the Move controllers that will be required for a lot of the games. I can understand the controllers but not including the camera is silly.

From the VR website -
Got a PS4?
You're ready for PS VR
Just plug in and play. PS VR is powered by PlayStation 4, so you can simply connect the two and step into new experiences in seconds.

Please note: you’ll need a PS4 system and a PlayStation Camera to enjoy PS VR. PS4, DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller and the PlayStation Camera are all sold separately.

You might still like it - the peripheral vision and head tracking is much more noticeable to me than the 3D.

Someone did a test where they turned off the 3D (sent the same image to each eye) and no-one noticed.

I'll see how it goes but guys you will all be like this:

In the sameway that hipsters are the modern mullet, you'll look back and remember the days we tried VR headsets just like we once walked around like that image above.

No one is going to be walking about the streets with a VR headset on though are they, it's not Google Glass!
