Empire Top 100 Video Games of all Time
Discussion
No mention of the Battlefield series, the Borderlands series or any of the Fifa games??
That list is a load of old poo.
My Top 10 would be...
1. Borderlands 2
2. Battlefield Bad Company 2
3. Payday: The Heist
4. Command And Conquer: Red Alert 2
5. Portal 2
6. Borderlands
7. Left 4 Dead 2
8. Freelancer
9. GTA: Vice City
10. Doom (Alien Wad File)

I got the last of us when I bought my ps3, I've played twice and can't say I get it. Ok so it's like an interactive film but not all that playable.
It's voted for by Empire magazine readers so maybe they like the visual story side more than the gameplay itself? Would explain the lack of racing, RTS and older game.Have to agree with everyone. It's a terrible list.
Where's Flashback? The first time I'd seen life like animation in a game.
Gran Turismo 3 - I'd watch the replays through a reflection in a window and comment on how 'real' it looked! Ha.
Alien Breed - captured (cashed in) on the Alien atmosphere perfectly.
That said, I'd agree COD MW2 deserves to be in there. Just because we're sick of it now doesn't mean it wasn't a perfect example of how far those games had come (at the time)

Depends on what you class as a top game. Newer games can quite easily be "better" than older games but in no way be ground breaking. If its just enjoyment factor then thats pretty subjective.
Ive not played Last of us so cant comment.
I would say that Half-Life deserves to be higher. It was revolutionary in respect to its vastness, games previous to it were finished in 30 mins max. It set the level for fps that wasnt really equalled until Half-Life 2 came out and that game set the level for graphics. These games also spawned Counter-Strike, I suspect without Counter-Strike modern fps (COD etc) would be very different.
Also Deus Ex, truly superb story and the user involvement in the story was a very new concept that Deus Ex mastered and again set the bar.
Fallout 3. Epic on pretty much every level.
Mass effect Series. Loved the feeling of watching a Block Buster movie but actually having a control of its direction.
So yeh...
Half-Life
Fallout 3
Deus Ex
Mass Effect Series
My top games. Lots of other great games but none have grabbed me and shifted the bar like these have.

Definitely a list heavily modern era dominated.... May be we should do a alternate top 5 from each generation? Top 5 prehistoric (e.g. space invaders, tempest, battle zone)
Top 5 8 bit (C64, Speccy, Amstrad, atari, NES)
Top 5 16 bit (Amiga, ST, early PC, Megadrive, SNES)
Post 16 bit (PC with 3D gpu, PS1, N64)
Gen 2 (PS2, Xbox, gamecube, PC)
Gen 3 (PS3, 360, Wii/Wii U, PC)
and Modern era....
That would give you a 35 must play games?
