Could be complete coincidence, but I've done two complete run throughs of the Hard Raid this week without doing the normal Raid first and have been given the helmet both times.
In previous weeks I had either done the normal raid first, or just jumped in at one of the last two checkpoints to finish off the hard raid and didn't get any hard raid gear over 3 or 4 attempts.
So, might be worth trying to get on a hard raid team from the start for your first attempt of the week if you're level 29 with maxed out weapons.

On that, I'm not sure what to do. I've got a fully maxed out Exotic Helmet for my hunter (the one with bugs coming out of it
) and I'm currently upgrading a raid chest piece. Otherwise I am a level 28.
Can I get to level 30 with these maxed out, and the rest not quite 100% legendary items? I don't want to waste shards upgrading non-raid bits of armour (they need the final 3 slots each upgrading) to get to level 30 only to bin it all off for raid stuff... at the same time, I fear that I wont be able to handle the hard raid as a level 29 Hunter. We're already handicapped in some ways, although I think I'm a steady shooter and have v decent void weapons.
What say you?!

To hit 30, you need one exotic and the rest maxed out raid gear. I have the same as you on both characters and I'm also saving my shards (I have almost 50 in my vault!), hoping that I get the right bits of armour for the right characters this week!On that, I'm not sure what to do. Seems like we have a Hard Raiding team in the making...
For those that want to have a crack at the hard raid, you'll need to get a lot of practice in the normal raid so you know it inside out.
The good news is that this practice should eventually get you all of the raid armour and weapons, which you should also try to max out level-wise (especially Atheon's Epilogue, Vision of Confluence, Praedyth's Revenge and Corrective Measure).
Then, once you've hit level 29, you can jump straight in and stand a good chance of finishing the hard raid.
Unfortunatley level 28 or below and even level 29 without max raid weapons is a recipe for lots of frustration followed by failure.

I've had annoying players (mostly hyperactive American pre-teens) who think they're God's gift, constantly telling everyone else what they should be doing, whilst letting down the team themselves, but then I've also joined teams that have absolutely smashed Atheon on hard within 2 minutes.
The trick is to keep the good guys on your friends list and bin the rest. Oh, and don't be afraid to leave a Raid team within seconds of joining if they turn out to be d!cks!

Raid hard is very difficult at level 29, so you'll need maxed out raid weapons (for the oracle killing perks/shield stripping on the auto rifle, sniper and HMG). Even then, you'll probably need at least 3x experienced level 30s to finish it.
Patched I believe, so no longer possible.
