One thing that I find quite interesting at the moment is people rushing to get to level 32, just to be 32, regardless of the armor roles. I've seen people with 300+ strength which is completely pointless for 2 reasons:
1: The max you can get for a role is 270 I believe so anything above that is a waste.
2:Strength is pretty pointless, even as a Titan. Considering it just reduces the cool down of your melee. I would much rather have close to 270 on Intellect or Discipline. Preferably Intellect for recharging your super.

I have enough Shards to get a second character to 32 but the roles on my armor are whats stopping me. Additionally this week I got a chest piece for my Titan that will mean I have zero strength for my Titan which is exactly what I want. Especially for hard raid, considering you get killed in one melee hit, there isn't a huge need for using melee vs grenades or supers.

These are of course just my opinions but if your not quite 32 and have the armor to do so, check the roles they have first and wait it out. It will be worth it in the long run.

Edit: If you do a lot of PvP, then strength may be of a little more use to you, I would still prefer faster recharging grenades personally.
I am totally guilty of this but, with good reason. If I am waiting for a chest piece (for example) to reach lvl 32 which will make me more useful in both normal and hard mode raids, I'm not about to leave it unlevelled and play the waiting game a second time waiting for the 'perfect' armour to drop!

Instead, I will max it out as soon as is humanly possible and, if I RNG blesses me with a better piece of raid armour further down the line, then I will level that up too if I think it is worth it (which should be easier to do as I am already level 32 and therefore more useful in raids)

However, I don't dwell on the armour stats too much. If I have a grenade ready great, I'll throw it. If my super is charged great, I'll use it. Other than that, I just run around and shoot stuff in the face as much as I can biggrin
I'm with Speckle on this - before the DLC I ended up having to grind the iron banner to get one of my characters to level 30 (essential for the hard raid with randoms) as I just couldn't get the piece of armour that I needed to drop in the Raid. So, it's not like many people have a choice of which armour to level up.

Plus I think melee abilities can be very useful - the hunter's throwing knife is always useful when you run out of ammo but need to finish an enemy off and his blink strike is extremely useful in parts of the raid to go invisible. Both the titan and the warlock have a melee that grants you an additional shield when you land a hit and the titan's shoulder charge and shield after sprinting can also have their uses.

With a good team, you shouldn't need to worry too much about charging your super as you should be producing enough orbs between you to keep your supers topped up and I find a lot of the "dumb" grenades aren't all that much use in the Hard Raid as the enemies tend to sidestep them.

The only exception is the Obsidian Mind Helm for Warlock - turns me into a feakin' walking Nova Bomb!! biggrin

We certainly struggled with Crota last night!! The only way to avoid the ogres is to get 3 rounds of hits on Crota with each sword! To do that, the swordbearer has to be killed very quickly and very close to the wall (this will require rockets aswell as snipers) and then our timing has to be perfect and, it is far from perfect at the moment.

However, I've watched a few videos this morning and I have some new ideas on bubble placement and ogre killing which might make life a little easier if we can get it right.

Having said all that, the more we try, the better we will get (hopefully!!)

In other news, Xur's inventory is back to the usual pile of cr@p that we've come to expect and he has followed up Icebreaker Friday spectacularly badly!! No Land Beyond anyone? hehe

No Land Beyond, great, bought 7 Helmet engrams in the hope of getting Helm of the Saint but no luck, plenty of Shards for me instead.

Got the raid boots from the gatekeeper fight last night, will probably get the titan boots from xur today too just to add to my collection, should have enough for two helmet engrams too, so will see how my luck is looking today!

I'm sure No Land Beyond must have a use somewhere in the DLC - it just seems meticulously designed. Perhaps it's to be used along with Black Hammer to take out Boomers and Ogres? It must do massive damage for a precision shot once fully levelled up?

I don't understand the point of the exotic boots though - seems the perks are very "unexotic", which makes them a waste of the exotic slot.

Not sure I'm convinced - I think it is just meant for a bit of fun and for those who like a challenge.

Having watched that video, you're right - it's garbage! The guy uses his melee much more often than NLB!

Did you see that the guy does the final damage to Crota's shield on the first run with his sword, allowing him to get max face time with Crota with his shield down?

Also, he uses the sword melee to "fly", much in the same way as you can use the relic in VoG and the Hunter's Arc Blade...

Yep- Kaney was doing that yesterday although your view may have been blocked from the ledge. It is the only safe way to ensure you get enough hits on him with the sword and then get away safely. smile

I'm sure you lot will crack this tonight, ready for the weekend attempts. It is just a matter of timing. smile

Kane is still keen to try from the left hand side.

Personally, I think the ledge is better. It seems you can actually stay out on the ledge when Crota moves right too.

We got to the ogres last night and we all seemed a bit flummoxed as to how we should go about killing them (myself included!) If we had a decent ogre strategy (which I think we do now), one more sword and we would have had him!

Well if we time it right, we should be able to finish him before the ogres spawn. We CAN do this. The things I'd change from last night, having watched a couple of videos:-

- When the sword-bearer spawns, the ultimate sword carrier and titan need to jump down to the bottom (but away from the gate-keeper and boomers... there are a couple of safe spots to do this) with rockets to ENSURE he is down within seconds while the rest snipe him. This ensures we can get 3 rounds on Crota. It also doesn't matter about those 2 "losing" rockets to do this as they don't need to focus on taking Crota down.

- We need to be regimented with rockets. 3 Gjallahorn rockets WILL take him down particularly if...

- VoC is used both by non-rocket chappies and those that have just fired rockets. I started using this and his shield seemed to continue to stay down compared to my (not fully upgraded) Black Hammer.

Our best run yesterday was when the timing was right with rockets. smile

I agree with the Specklemiester re the ledge. The snipers and rocketeers are safe from boomers and the thrawl that now spawn on the back rooms, meaning no oversoul which fks us up and causes a wipe.

If we jump up from where we stand on the ledge, we should easily hit him with rockets from up there but, yes the sword carrier needs to be close when he goes down.

In some of the videos I have watched, the titan pops a bubble on the ledge of the boomer tower to stop the boomers shooting the sword carrier rather than on the ledge where the carrier waits.

As you say, those of us firing rockets at Crota only need fire a single rocket each down and then switch to VoC or similar scout rifle (I plan to try my 331 badger tonight.) That is only 2 rockets each on Crota per sword (ghorn holds 7 with raid armour). If you're low on rockets after the ogres, there will be plenty of time to use synths.

I don't think the ogres will be a problem. Attempting 2 swords is putting too much pressure on the sword carrier and increasing the risk of Crota killing him. 3 strikes each sword is fine - 3rd sword will kill him, ogres can be dealt with.

Now we know the mechanics and there are no spoilers, it worth watching the guys who were first to complete the hard raid (and in only 27 minutes):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yvQtNllGbE

Note the use of the blessing of light Titan bubbles at the top of the stairs and on the ledge to not only provide protection from the boomers but to buff the sword holder so he can run toward Crota and be hitting him while he's still going down on one knee.

The blessing of light seems to be a really good way to go, especially for the health re-gen.

Side note, I have an Atheon & Gorgon checkpoint, both on hard if anyone wants it and I'm online, just drop me a message, more than happy to share either
