Guys, some quick tips on weapon types vs enemy types (useful if you're having problems against a certain boss):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTLosBMLt3Q
In summary, there are 4 weapon types:
Kinetic (no symbol)
Fire (red, flame symbol)
Arc (blue, jagged star symbol)
Void (purple, whirl symbol)
These symbols are shown on the weapon's info page and against the weapon on your HUD display.
The 3 non-kinetic ("elemental") weapon types don't do anything different to kinetic weapons against enemies without shields.
However, if an enemy has a shield, their shield has a colour: either red, blue or purple, most noticeable when you're shooting at it.
The elemental weapons do bonus damage to the shield only of an enemy whose shield colour matches the elemental weapon colour.
Finally, there is no headshot/weakspot damage multiplier when an enemy has a shield in place.

Once at level 20, do you only gain "light" if you have also finished the story missions? I don't seem to be getting any light no matter what I try, perhaps I'm just unlucky so far?
No need to do all the story missions - I jumped into a fireteam and finished the last mission out of sequence, so have seen the (current) ending, but still haven't finished all the Mars missions and am now level 22, with around 34 light points from armour I've found along the way.Not sure there is level 20 armour, but in any case it's not the armour level you need to worry about, it's the light level.
Only blue armour and above (purple and gold) have a light level, and not all blue armour has a light level. I also haven't picked up any new armour with light for a while and I've been farming and doing strikes etc.
Re the weapons - I'm not sure the attack rating means anything? I started a new character and used a level 4 scout rifle right up to level 11 and it was still effective.

Same here on the overall feel for the game.
I have got into the habit of switching my fireteam to 'open' every time I switch on but it hasn't made much difference as to whether anyone joins.
I am level 21 and if any of you fancy doing some strikes etc at that kind of level over the weekend ping a friend request to my Psn ID matt-don and we can go for it. Adding every one on the current PH list doesn't make much sense when there is such disparity between current goals/levels.
Matt (and anyone else), I'm spending a lot of time on the game at the moment and have characters at level 27, 18 and 3, so should have something suitable for anyone. Just send me a friend request with "PH" in the message so I know you're not a random and then join my fireteam whenever you see me online. Anybody up for a raid, any time soon? By soon, I was specifically thinking tomorrow night
Equally, has anybody actually completed one? How long did it take?
I'm up for it - have a level 27 titan and a level 25 warlock that I'd like to do it with.Equally, has anybody actually completed one? How long did it take?

Send me a friend request.
Should be from about 9pm tomorrow night until late - I hear it takes a couple of hours even if you know what you're doing.

How are you guys generally getting your legendary gear in order to level up past 20? I've got all rare gear now fully upgraded but that's only given me enough "light" to get to level 21.4 so I'm guessing I need some legendaries but I've yet to see a purple engram drop anywhere, so am I better off buying the stuff somewhere?
The only place I seem to be able to get any though is the Vanguard dude but he wants 65 odd points for some chest armour and I've only got 37 after all of this playing so that seems like a non-starter
Are there any tricks out there I'm missing or is it just a case of keep plugging away and hope for the drops? (Yes, I'm impatient to level up )
I'll bet that a lot of your blue armour is for level 18 rather than 20. It tends to be a slow trickle to get first blue stuff for level 20, then legendaries. The only place I seem to be able to get any though is the Vanguard dude but he wants 65 odd points for some chest armour and I've only got 37 after all of this playing so that seems like a non-starter

Tips for getting it higher are to do the weekly strikes which give you strange coins that you can spend with Xur at the weekends for exotic gear and make sure you do lots of vanguard bounties and the daily mission each day to get your vanguard marks up, even doing the strike playlist will help there. Also keep an eye on http://destinypublicevents.com/ which will tell you when the public events happen on each planet, as they're a good way to rank up your vanguard marks too. You can only make 100 of these each week (Tuesday to Tuesday) but that's enough to get yourself some legendary kit.
You can also do Crucible marks by playing the PvP, not to mention the three other factions to gain rep with.
You can do it much lower than the suggested level if you just ensure you only do the Earth mission (selection is random, but just go back to orbit and select again if it isn't Earth). Then get as high a solar sniper rifle as possible and at least 3 special weapon ammo synths and hide out in the corridor before the room where the boss comes out of the wall, sniping at the shielded shanks and anything else that comes into view. Be very careful though - even one direct hit can kill you at the lower armour levels!

Nice, which class would you say is the most useful for PvE and PvP? I rocking a titan at the moment but would like to give one of the others a try.Overall though, they seem nicely balanced - Titan has some great powers in defensive, can put up a shield that is impenetrable to fire and can be upgraded so that any teammate who enters it temporarily gains an additional shield when they leave it. That sub-class for titan also generates lots of orbs for things like machine gun kills and melee kills. I've also picked up an exotic helmet that makes any enemy who enters the shield blind, so could be very useful for trapping enemies.
Warlock has an ability that can bring yourself back from the dead, i.e. a free respawn, which is obviously extremely useful in PvE.
Hunter is very quick and nimble and has some bad ass offensive abilities - throwing knife and golden gun.
So, all in all, they're all good and I like playing them all.
The slog to get them to 20 was a bit of a grind though - I would say save your best weapons at each level on the way up in your vault - it will make levelling up your next character a lot easier/more fun.

Would have joined you, but sadly still stuck on level 21 Can't see to get any decent gear to level up. Even my rare stuff is level 16 / 17 rather than level 20
I know many don't seem to be enjoying the PvP but it really is a quick way to level up. Just load up with bounties and hit the Crucible. I've gone from level 20 to level 24 within a week. It can be fun in a hectic kind of way too and now I've started to learn the maps and some of the tricks of positioning\weapons etc it can be quite enjoyable. That's how I now have 3 characters at level 25+.
Anyone fancy getting a fireteam together for some crucible matches under the Iron Banner special event?
Essentially it's a "gloves off" set of crucible matches where your kit, armour and weapons all work as intended - there is no nerfing or buffing of kit to match you against your opponents!
Seems like there may well be some good kit as rewards, too...

You can do 20 to 21 in a couple of days with the Queen's wrath event in PvE at the moment. Guaranteed legendary gear for each mission and there's one that's pretty quick and easy (Earth strike), even at lower levels.
That's how I now have 3 characters at level 25+.
The Queen's Wrath strikes are rated at level 24 though aren't they? At three levels above where I am doesn't that make them "impossible" i.e. you do no damage to the enemies at all? I guess I need to try it rather asking questions That's how I now have 3 characters at level 25+.
I've got a couple of Queen's bounties done already so I'll give it a shot
I must have done it around 20 times between my 3 characters and still only got helmets or chest armour. Great the first time you get it, but the sniper rifle would have gone well in my armoury!

Nice idea, but if it's basically a no holds barred blastathon, unless you are level 28+ complete with a set of legendary / exotics weapons and armour you stand little to no chance? I've also been one-shot killed by level 24s (I was using my level 28 titan).
Would be great to get a few of us together though as I firmly believe the key to the crucible is just to roam around from objective to objective in a gang of (at least) 3 and spank anyone you come across.
The weekly heroic seems ridiculously hard this week - did it with a random 27 Warlock with my 28 titan and just couldn't survive the waves when taking on the boss - I have a level 300 sniper rifle and it was still taking 8 shots to take out a servitor and 4 a yellow vandal!
Didn't even get near to finishing off the boss in god knows how many attempts.
Then tried it at level 26 with the same two of us plus Teampenguin at level 25) and we all got taken out before we even reached the boss! I was one-shotted by a level 26 minotaur, despite being at full health, inside my shield!

Are you talking about the Nightfall or just the heroic one?Didn't even get near to finishing off the boss in god knows how many attempts.

It's the one on Venus where the tall boss drops out of a pod and walks around with a big gun, taking ridiculous amounts of damage to kill (about 50 sniper headshots, I'd have thought).

Have to say I'm not sure why you struggled so much, just make sure you have void (purple) weapons as that's what will do big damage and take your time. I managed to solo it tonight. Went on to try and get fusion rifle kills on the nightfall strike for an exotic weapon bounty and somehow managed to finish the whole strike, got to a certain stage and realised it could probably be done. After doing that, the regular weekly one was a bit more simple, as you've only got one damage modifier on.
The modifier really is key though, dropped the boss with about 10 void sniper rifle headshots and a mag of void machine gun fire.
What level were you playing it at - I tried level 28 first and level 26.The modifier really is key though, dropped the boss with about 10 void sniper rifle headshots and a mag of void machine gun fire.
I hope you're right about the void weapons - I put 6 rounds of level 300 solar sniper fire into the bosses head before he'd even got a shot off and barely scratched him.

Finally hit level 20 and completed the main story. Got to level 21 within 5 minutes. I can see this being a bit of a grind.
Concentrate on getting vanguard marks and reputation. You can get the marks by completing public events (look online for schedules of where they are - Earth mothyards and divide are most reliable at 00/30 mins past hour and 10-15/40-45 mins past the hour respectively) and strikes.Best way to get reputation is to complete bounties.
Once you're level 2 rep with the vanguard you can buy legendary armour at 65 marks a piece. Helmet, gloves, chest and legs at legendary level will get you to level 28/29 when fully upgraded.

The random 27 warlock was me (and thanks for reviving me constantly!). I have the Shadow Price legendary auto rifle at around 255 and it was taking almost a full clip to bring down the shanks and dregs. By the time we managed to get the boss down to almost dying and the stealth vandals came out, I may as well have been using a potato gun. And every weapon fired at me felt like it was using homing ammunition. I've done a weekly heroic before on my own when I was only a level 26, but this week is just crazy. It needs a full team of level 28s so there is no handicap against the supposed cannon fodder enemies.
Cool, sorry I didn't recognise you from on here! That was a hard slog though! All my weapons were legendary, my sniper rifle is the highest power you can get in the game and the others were upgraded too!
