Thanks to Youngsyr and EECCTimH for dragging me through that weekly heroic tonight. Clearly I had no business being there. What level was it set to? I'd been struggling with the level 22 one myself and with a friend so thought I'd join in... There's no way that was the same mission! I was getting 1-shotted by everything and couldn't help much - but you've basically got me my exotic shotgun so thankyou!
No worries - even at level 28 two hits would kill me. Seems my armour is made out of cheese!I've tried that mission at level 28 (the level we did it at) on my own and it's nigh on impossible - no matter how careful you are, there's always one sneaky enemy who gets behind you and insta-kills you before you can react - so it helps massively to have other people on the fireteam.
You should be able to join here:

You may need to hit the "set as Playstation clan" button on that screen once you've joined.

To combine two of the topics discussed above, i was attempting to farm the loot spot last night, using my scout rifle in the process. Didn't have much success with the farming. I got a couple of engrams right at the start (1 blue, 1 green) but then no more. I think i was doing it right, but maybe not...
The scout rifle is fine when you've got some time and space to go for all headshots, where the damage is high. But if my back was to the wall during a strike/raid the damage output isn't fast enough, especially when enemies are too close/numerous/fast to target the sensitive bits. Good point on the upgrade slots through, i haven't looked at those so they'll give it some added stank no doubt.
For comparison to your earlier post, I've racked up 37 hours of gameplay and got 3 purples. Definitely sounds like you've been a bit hard done by.
Getting a bit addicted to Skirmish in the Crucible. I'm not normally one for the smaller tactical game modes, but here it seems to slow things down a bit and make it less of a frantic. Easier to build decent streaks too if you work together as a tight unit.

This seems to cover most eventualities in PVE, you can take out enemies at with the scout/sniper and then defeat swarms/break shields with the HMG.
I am working on an exotic bounty for the Bad Ju Ju pulse rifle though, so my set up may switch.
For me though the most important thing is to take ammo packs - I always have at least two of each equipped as a weapon with no ammo is less use than a pointy stick.

I need one more strange coin and I'll be able to get some exotic armour from Xur. Never dealt with him before but, I've heard there is a risk I might get something that my character (Hunter) can't use - is there any way I can make sure this doesn't happen?
Xur sells exotic armour (one piece per class per week) and an exotic weapon for strange coins, so no randomness there - you see what you get before you buy.Edited by Speckle on Friday 17th October 11:57
The random element comes in with the exotic engram he sells - it costs 23 motes of light and guarantees you an exotic item, but it can be for any class, so you've only got 1/3 chances of it being for your class (assuming you've only got one guardian).
Obviously if you have a guardian in each class, then there's no drama.

Hmmmm, I'm 2 strange coins short of buying some exotic armour. Bugger. It seems the best way to get guaranteed coins is through the weekly heroic strikes, but IIRC there's no matchmaking on these and the one I tried solo was very tough. Teammates needed me thinks.
I was going to give the Scout Rifle a workout last night following yesterdays posts, but the PSN was down
I'd like to give VoG a go but i think at level 25, even though I'm reasonable at these things, I'd still take a pasting. Hence the exotic armour being so tantalizingly close that would take me up to level 26. I've got some decent chest armour and gauntlets so what I'd really like is a well polished helmet
If you're on now, send me a friend request (youngsyr) and we'll do the weekly now. I was going to give the Scout Rifle a workout last night following yesterdays posts, but the PSN was down

I might be able to buy from Xur for the first time this weekend if I can scratch together two more strange coins (exotic armour has been 13 coins in the past IIRC).
As I understand it, you can BUY a strange coin for a fair chunk of glimmer from Xur once per weekend per character, is that right? Can't remember how much he sells them for, but in theory, since Glimmer is shared across characters, could you start a new character, get to the tower, buy a coin and stick it in the vault for your main character to reclaim? Delete the new guardian, wash rinse repeat. So essentially if you have enough glimmer you could buy as many Strange Coins as you need?

Brilliant, just got team killed by someone in the crucible.
Wondered why some idiot was continually trying to ram me with their jet bike whilst I was capturing points.
I really don't understand people like that - genuinely have nothing better to do than trying to annoy strangers on a computer game.

I'm up for doing a VoG run tomorrow. Fingers crossed I can get my Warlock to level 28 tonight so that I don't suffer too much of a damage penalty. I've still not had a run through yet though but I'm happy to follow someone else's lead. PSN is EECCTimH.
Thanks for carrying me through that Weekly Nightfall, now have a nice halo for my hunter...Speckle said:
I managed to get an Exotic helmet last night and only need one more piece of legendary armour before I start saving up for some legendary weapons
I picked up an engram which turned out to be a legendary cloak which is tied to the New Monarchy faction. I haven't equipped it yet as I'm only a few vanguard points away from some new armour. If I then switch to the New Monarchy cloak, what are the pros and cons? I realise that all my reputation then linked to them and I can ultimately buy their legendary kit - what is the downside? Should I bother or, should I stick to Vanguard (I only play PvE if that makes any difference)
I think the only change is the one you've mentioned - all your rep goes to the faction, rather than the crucible dealer.I picked up an engram which turned out to be a legendary cloak which is tied to the New Monarchy faction. I'd stick with the normal crucible rep as you'll get a "gift" every time you level up beyond level 3 (takes 3,000 rep points per level) which is likely to be a legendary item.
The same will eventually happen with the crucible rep, but you have to start from level 0 again.

Any tips for when my game + console comes this week?
I have had a nosey round at guides etc and think im going to go Warlock Sunslinger to be a little different.
If you like being an all out killing machine, choose Hunter.I have had a nosey round at guides etc and think im going to go Warlock Sunslinger to be a little different.
If boxing clever is a bit more your style, choose Warlock.
If you like being able to soak up a lot of damage and dish out a lot of firepower, choose Titan.
One great tip is to save your best weapons at each level in the vault - this will help you massively when/if you start a second character, as you'll already have great weapons to speed you through the lower levels.

...i totally ignored everything said and ploughed on with this bounty. Truth be told, I just couldn't admit defeat. I don't care if Thorn is crap, I have to have it. That being so, I have achieved the 500 point score in the crucible. Was fairly easy once I got to grips with a shotgun and tried free-for-all instead. I got from 143 points or so to 500 in 6 games.
What I am struggling with is the final leg of the bounty. A fresh strike has opened up on the Moon, as mentioned, and it is frikkin impossible solo. Tried it with a couple of mates and got through to Phogoth... then my connection totally died. Gutted doesn't cover it.
Truth be told, I'm not sure they knew what needs to be done, i.e. Phogorth has to be kept alive and the waves of enemy dealt with until the target (another wizard) arrives towards the lower platform... and him killed as well.
So [reverse psychology mode on] are you tough enough?! If so, please please do jump in if you see me online. This thing is consuming me and so it is the only thing I'll be doing until it is done... or I get REALLY bored.

There's also a way to "cheese" the strike, one of your fireteam stays in the room just before the big hall with the boss and just sits there acting as a spawn point (respawning is allowed) whilst the other members go in and kill as many minions as they can before they get killed, then rinse and repeat.
I suspect solar sniper rifles will be useful against the shielded wizards and an arc HMG against the shielded captains. I have both.

Dude, just go on a patrol and aim to get involved with a public event. The first of the day will always get you an ascendant shard (it will be left the postie )
Happy to help later on tonight.
Itried that but, will try again. I seem to keep on getting motes of light or ascendant energy - it's like they know what I need!! I'll send you an invite tonight, I should be on around 7pm Happy to help later on tonight.
It's only a basic story mission, so as long as you take a few ammo packs you can usually do it solo even at level 26.

im happy to help, only lvel 24 but more than willing.
Nice one! We can both hide behind the Titan. I had a quick crack at it on my own today and it's pretty straight-forward until you get to the 4 witches who just pound you with constant shots. I reckon it will need at least a couple of us and probably juggling some weapons with ammo packs.
I started with a solar sniper and an arc HMG and that combo can take on all comers until the witches. I suspect switching to a solar rocket launcher or HMG when they appear will be the key. A solar fusion rifle might also work.

In Queen's Wrath at level 21 you could get all the armour just by doing the Earth strike over and over.
I suspect the way to do the witches is to lure them into the corridor on the side of the room and then pound all 4 of them at once with solar rockets/HMGs.

Speaking of shards, it was my suggestion that getting gold on the first public event per day always gave you an AS. My bad... as this doesn't seem to be the case. I've done about 5 when farming for Helium filaments and each time I received an AS... the message from the postie making it sound like they are always AS.
The first one of the day is always a shard or energy, I think?Flat-out said:
Bokka, TeamPenguin and I then did the weekly and daily strikes. We abandoned the nightfall as it was just impossible as a threesome of level 26/27s. Apologies for bailing fellas- needed a lie down after that and my messages of thanks didn't get sent for some reason.
Just did the the weekly nightfall with EECCTimH and Ollyarto, trick is for one guy to lure the witches in to the side corridor, where the two others are waiting at the top with solar snipers/HMGs to take them out. It's not easy at level 29 though, so level 26/7 will be a bit of a struggle.
