Back in ye olden dayes, when I had my master system and then megadrive I used to game quite a bit. Now, in my dotage I quite fancy having a go again, but I can't find any games that I really fancy. Preferably on PC, maybe OS X - have both but no console. Not too demanding on graphics as don;t want to fork out on GFX cards and the like.
For instance, I used to like games like Populous and Dungeon Keeper as well as FPS like Quake and Quake II - anything similar available today? Nothing too frantic though, eh. Nearly forgot RPGs like Final Fantasy were good too.

You'd probably enjoy something like Dawn of War (not the sequel) or Company of Heroes II

Good for sitting back with a coffee and stroking the beard.

Alternatively, FPS wise, the BioShock series will see you good.

If you liked final fantasy I'd say try more of them, everything until 10 are pretty great and should be cheap on steam

Thanks for suggestions. Like the look of Portal 2 and Dawn of War. thumbup
Have downloaded Steam, which in itself looks like a useful source.

Steam frequently have holiday sales where large quantities of games can be bought for peanuts.......

My wallet has never forgiven me.

I too am an old timer, remembering with fondness playing Sonic the Hedgehog and Golden Axe on the new Mega-Drive...

Not too into games now (at the age of 47), but I do love the Total War and Civilisation games - both sets of games where you can sit back, relax and enjoy at your own pace.

Get Portal 1 before 2 - better game and easier to get into. Should be cheaper too.

Dungeon Keeper 2 is out there if you liked the first - should be peanuts/free these days.
Dungeon Keeper 3 is being developed by someone else, I made a thread on it here once...

Final Fantasy VII is peanuts on Steam too, as said above anything up to and including 10 are good. 13 is okay.

Quake Live is basically quake 3 in a browser. Was made available today on steam too and is free to play.

Gog has loads of old (and new) games, all updated to work on modern versions of Windows etc http://www.gog.com/

It sounds like some of the indie titles would probably suit you better than the AAA big studio productions. FTL has soaked up more of my time than I care to admit to, it is the sort of game that could even have run on 8-bit micros, never mind 16 bit. I think it cost me £2:20 in a Steam sale once.

I find indie titles rarely have any depth. The odd one shines but they usually get disgarded pretty quick.

That's okay, AAA titles rarely have any depth either.

Good on you, Its akin to reading a good book if you use you imagination.
I love old roguelikes.

I remember being stoned off my tree running away from a room full of red Ds.
I was genuinely frightened and my heart was banging, ended up hiding somewhere and luring them out one at a time... since I was on my way back up...!

The joke was I think I ended up dying from drinking some tainted water frown

A weeks gameplay brought to a horrific end.

If you lose your temper easily, its not the best of games tongue out

Thats what I dislike about new games to be honest, there is no real risk, you can just save the game and keep retrying..!
"I remember being stoned off my tree running away from a room full of red Ds."
hehe
You move your "letter" left and a whole bunch of capital Ds move left making you swear. nuts

You're right - you do get saves. Didn't Diablo 2 have a hardcore mode? Permadeath?

I only used to play hardcore mode on Diablo 2, only used to play it online though.
That's tough going, I'd imagine. Don't think I've invested any time in hardcore mode as it just seemed a bit of a case of edging forward a mm at a time and seeing if anything stirs.

Its very good fun actually, as everything is a risk..! You think more about what you are doing or what weapons to use, rather than hacking and slashing everything..! Sorcs, Amazons and Paladins were the main staple amongst my friends.
You end up spending longer playing, rather than just rushing through the game asap.
You don't want to be fighting Diablo and getting to Nightmare or Hell too fast..!

Sorc hydra/lightening = great! (Better than frost orb)
Paladin with holy hammers
Amazon with poison/lightening javelins or guided arrows. And just kite!

You have to pump as much health as you can, and use your horodric cube to create better potions (purple ones, instant rejuvenation)

It is still better than Diablo 3 imo smile
Bloody hell. All that brings back memories.

I quite like trapsassin. I think to a certain degree it'd be helpful especially lightning traps. Great for clearing a room while you open chests. biggrin
