Have several of the modules.

Be prepared to spend hours and hour and hours of time...

...Just to start the engine.

They have taken it to ridiculous levels of authenticity. I think the KA50 takes about 25 mins to get the engines running, you take off and immediately crash.

Fixed wing is pretty good, but again, long start up times and the weapons systems are so complex that I've not even managed to let loose a missile yet. That's before you jump into the SU25 where everything is in Russian!!!!

Its ace, and I love the concept of such a joined up theater but boy it can get depressing the amount of time you have to sink into it.

Just two nights ago, I thought I'd jump on and have a quick tear up. Selected a single battle to make a push and take three villages. 3 hrs later and I realized I'd just taken one before I logged off in a huff.

Did I mention it takes a lot of time?

The base game, with some kind of Soviet Ground Attack plane,is free. But still stupidly complex!
If complexity & not combat are important, some FSX add ons have every button modelled too.
If combat & not complexity, the Sturmovik series are good, but WW2

Watched a mate play this, took ages to even take off, so many buttons for everything. Then we took off and crashed shortly after pressing the wrong button during a turn.

I have the a10 version. I'd echo the time comment. You can start in the air though. One for the true anorak.

I downloaded this DCS World a few weeks ago to have a go, figuring that I'd start with the Mustang as it would be easier to get going. Yes it has less buttons to press before startup, but it was still rather complex. Once I was up I was alright though.

I noticed however that I already had this game, as it is just a free version of what I believe was called DCS Lock-On that I bought several years ago. Its the same game, same campaign map, but comes with the F-15, A-10, Frogfoot, Sukhoi-35 (I think) and possibly some other aircraft instead of having to buy them all separately as in DCS World.

I'd suggest that if you play DCS World and really like it, then see if you can source a copy of Lock On as you'll get all the aircraft and missions without having to pay a premium.

As for other simulators though, as others have said, the Sturmovik games are worth a shot and just as taxing as DCS if a little easier to get up and running.

He's into flight sim, loves spending ages setting all the FMS and autopilot up. My dad is Avionics, a weird breed - they love all that button pressing crap! He'll be right at home, loves a good pre-flight.

Me on the other hand, im A&E. Turn it off/on and if all fails, Bash it until it works smile

So general consensus is that its good for a freebie?

Yeah, as a freebie its well worth a shot, you have the full campaign of SU-25 missions and an unarmed P-51 Mustang to fly about in so there's plenty to do, and if you really like it then you can buy the additional aircraft packs.

Do you not have to pay for the P51?
I had FSX and the B17,and Boeing 377 from A2A,full simulation of systems, plus a virtual co pilot to help out,and loved those...need to reinstall that game

takes ages to take off? you can have engines already warm selected, and just press two keys for a quick start.....It takes a couple of minutes that way.

Its a good game, I have black shark 2

You get an unarmed version with the initial, free game, but if you want the armed one with missions you need to buy that relevant pack.

I just remembered, I have AeroFly FS that I bought on STEAM a while back, that was a nice flyer.

Its only set in Switzerland and you have a handful of aircraft to choose from (including two gliders) but it looks bloody gorgeous once you get up to height and is a nice Sim to fly about in. Nowhere near as complex as DCS or even FSX with regards to the technical side of things, but for just pure flight then its worth a look. (Click on the pic below and then a second time to get it to full size to appreciate the quality)
