Now I'm getting a bit long in the tooth and with GTA being released on the next gen consoles and most of my playing friends switching to that I'm wondering if it's time to hang up my joystick.

Haven't bought a game for the 360 since GTA and still enjoy that game, but other than project cars I can't see anything else grabbing me on the 360.

I'm really loathed to spend the money on a next gen console for maybe one or two games and then the whole PS/XB arguement starts as I've always had Xbox and love Forza so that would swing me to the XBone, but many of the people I know would be playing GTA on PS.

So I'm now stuck in that limbo of not knowing what to do.

Lots of new releases coming out over the coming months on the new consoles. Just got a ps4 and graphics alone make it all worth doing.

I'm really fighting getting a next gen, can't justify the costs, that money could be used more usefully elsewhere

There is no way that these will last 10-15 years. Unless the hardware becomes upgradeable, I cant see how the tech which is already behind the curve in comparison with PC will be expected to last 2 life cycles of a usual console.

I've thought this myself though, bought an Xbone in summer and whilst I've enjoyed Titanfall, BF4 really hasnt caught me like Bad Company 2 did on the 360. Destiny isnt my bag, I'm interested in Forza Horizon 2 and i'll probably get the latest FIFA as I havent had one since 12 on the 360 and its one of those games where you can just kill 30 mins without having to be great at it.

Other than that though, I'm not sure what Genre i'm looking for anymore. COD got a bit long in the tooth some years back, I'm not really into big storylines, I prefer multiplayer online. For me, thats shooting, racing or football. When I've criticised the 2 biggest shooting formats, it kind of leaves me with a narrow range of options!

My mate was in a similar situation.

I then seen his FIFA14 stats, explained to him how much he played it in minutes and the cost per minute. I then explained that he has ploughed in hundreds of hours in previous FIFA's, hundreds of hours into Assasins Creed, GTA etc over the years.

They are an absolute bargain as far as entertainment values go.

What about moving to PC gaming?

The games tend to be much cheaper with far more choice.

It's not expensive to get a reasonable desktop that has gaming capabilities as well, or you can improve what you may have at the moment - It's also upgradable and can be done in bits, so to speak, so no big outlay as you would have replacing a console.

I'm not a big gamer yet I play COD almost every night for an hour or two. I have inherited my sons old PS3 and tend to have a blast after work before dinner. I bought him a PS4 for his bedroom and it looks stunning. The biggest problem for me is the controller. I just can't get my old brain to respond R and L buttons being the wrong way around for shooting, scoping and dropping IED's. I'd get myself a PS4 if Sony let me use the PS3 controller and games like COD let me have my old R and L butons back!

I'd probably enjoy the other PS games if I gave them a chance but I tend to buy one game which I play for a year then move onto another instead of having a large selection and alternating. Vice City was anohter I did that with.

I feel the same way. not so much time for it these days, though there are still some PS3 games I'd like to get. Having to pay for PS Plus membership for the infrequent occasions I may venture online with a PS4 is also off-putting.

Yeah that really annoys me that I have to pay for PS Plus now. I used to do the campaigns on COD but I don't even bother with them now, all my play is team deathmatch online. I've stopped short of paying over £11 for the map packs (I think there's 4 of them now). I'm playing Ghosts these days but I got the MW3 map pack and hated all the maps!

This.

I racked up 40 days game time just on Call of Duty 4: Modern Warefare.

£40 for the game = 0.04p per hour of entertainment. Nothing can top that.

If you play enough games over enough time it really does equate to almost cost free entertainment.

I just spunked £800 on an Xbox One and PS4 and several games. I've already sunk 30 hours into The Last of Us alone, as well as dozens of hours on other games, I imagine the consoles would have paid for themselves within the next 12 months.

I've done nearly 40 days on Battlefield 1943, it was a £10 download only game, so much value biggrin

sidaorb, project cars isn't coming out on 360, next gen only or PC if you go that route.

This. When you work out the unit cost per hour of gaming, it's a really REALLY cheap hobby. Can be as addictive as crack, but a hell of a lot cheaper hehe

Guys, just to confirm - to play online with the PS4 do you need to pay for the PS Plus membership?

When the next Rainbow Six title comes out I'll be buying an xbone. Until then I'm enjoying GTA V and lately, Sniper Elite III.

Sony said during the PS4 launch that they wouldn't follow the 10 year life cycle of the PS3 again, they also spent a lot less relatively on it by largely following a PC format.

I can't believe the PS3 lasted so well, GTA V looks pretty amazing on it considering it's only got 256MB of RAM, less than most people's phones these days.

Anyway, back on point.

I'm in a similar position to the OP, mid-30's now with a wife and 2 kids, I can go weeks without having the time to fire up the PS3, frankly it's all but been handed down to my Son for Minecraft.

I suspect I'll get a PS4 next year, expecting a price fall after Xmas, not that that's the major driver - but our Baby will be a little older and more independent and I might get an hour a week to myself!
