I could never get the mod working, I don't have the time to faf about and I don't do alpha/beta (unless it's free) so I'll wait for a full release. It's an interesting genre but so many similar survival games out now (jungle, atomic war, dinosaurs etc) they are going to have a hard time keeping ahead of the game.

Speaking of which has anyone tried Unturned. DayZ concept of Zombie survival but in Minecraft graphical style.

I'm a big fan of DayZ, and have been playing it since a few months after the mod first appeared, which must be around two years ago now IIRC.

The Standalone is a bit more polished than the mod, but is still very much in development, and updates seem to be coming slower and slower in recent months. Apparently they will be moving the game over to a new engine, which should be interesting. Its a buggy game though, and despite looking much better than the mod, its quite an empty experience IMO, with little to do beyond getting enough food and drink to easily support yourself. My friends and I have given up playing it at the moment, we're waiting for some serious updates to appear, such as vehicles, better weapon physics and just a bit more to do.

The mod has a lot more variety going for it, with people creating new maps, modes and content all the time. It has its own quirks and bugs, but I've had a lot of fun there, especially on the Epoch modes, I'm a sucker for base building and love doing this. Aircraft, helicopters and vehicles all add up to give the game more fun.

Personally, I'd say that if you want the full DayZ experience, play the mod, as it has everything that makes the game good there already. The Standalone isn't bad, but feels hollow, and well, you never know what lies ahead for it; it may become a fantastic game taking all the aspects of the mod into a better game, or it could just get dumped by the developers and not get much better than it already is. I don't think Standalone will become any better than what Vanilla DayZ was.
TBH I half tempted with the mod as its free. is it more complicated? it certainly looks it.

You've still got to get arma 2 plus expansion pack (arrowhead?)

The full game isn't running well on my PC. Need to fiddle about a fair bit with settings.

The mod is no more complicated than the standalone, gameplay wise at least.

To get it working can sometimes be a bit of a one-off faff though, but once you have ARMA2 installed and fully updated with Beta patches (If you have it on Steam this is all done automatically) download a programme called DayZ Commander and that acts as a hub for all the patches, downloads and game servers you'll need to play.

ETA: As mentioned, you'll need ARMA 2 and its Arrowhead expansion pack in order to get it working, but DayZ itself and all maps, modes etc are free.

Graphics can be a little fiddly to get right - Ensure you set an option along the lines of "Default Memory" somewhere in the graphics menu to "Default", and you have to resolutions available, the main one and the 3D one. Make sure they are both the same otherwise it can cause issues. Switch "Post Processing" off so as to allow you to see things in the distance, and get rid of shadows too unless you have a beast of a PC. They don't really add anything and just slow things down.

perfect.

thanks for the tips guys! really unsure which version to get now.

Been watching the Frankie video's. He seems to have gone off standalone and back to the mod. very tempted to do the mod as it seems to have more going on.

I wont have a total beast of a PC, just a usable one!

A friend manages to play the mod on his average laptop, so an average PC should be more than up to it. Plus if you're buying the mod, you're getting two full games of ARMA as well, which are good games in their own right.

Yeah you'll have no dramas with that spec. The mod isn't stressful on a system because it's graphics are so intensive, its because the game as a whole isn't the most streamlined of things. You have control over a lot of options regarding the graphics, moreso than most games which is a good thing, so its just a case of getting in there and fiddling with sliders and dropdown menus until you find the sweet spot.

Even at its worst the game isn't unplayable, you'll just have lower framerates, I average about 30fps in the mod and its perfectly playable.

Perfect. So now I'm set on getting the mod.

What's the process of getting it?

I'll be downloading ARMA II via steam.

I'm downloading it to as the standalone is a bit pants on my PC.

There's a bundle for Arma II & Arma: OA for about £15.99 or such on steam, get that & the DayZ Mod (free).

There's also the DayZ commander which is meant to be essential? I'm going to look up more on this when I'm home.

from what I can gather, make sure you run both Arma games before opening DayZ, then launch from commander and Bob's your uncle.

Yep, just boot up both versions so that it creates certain game files in your documents folder, then download/install DayZ Commander and that will update any beta patches the game needs, then you can download DayZ itself.

After watching loads of FRANKIES vids on youtube I've finally decided to take the plunge - but not which version though.

Am I right in thinking that buying this lot will set me up for the DayZ mod:

£16.99

http://store.steampowered.com/sub/4639/

" Day Z Mod
The Day Z Mod requires Arma II and Arma II: Operation Arrowhead, both are included in this bundle, however for the best experience (including high detail textures for all models used in the DayZ Mod) purchase Arma II: Complete Collection. "

But for the complete collection it's £24.99 (which gives you the bits needed for detailed textures explained above):

Right, PC is built. Downloading CS:GO, then all the ARMA stuff.

Whats the process? bought the full arma:2 pack. (£24).

from what I gather, start up arma.... then start up the OA bit...

Then run Dayz commander.... do you download dayz from there?

Yep, once you have done your list of things, open DayZ Commander and you'll see a window on the right hand side with lots of map / mode names At the top is the DayZ Commander update, below that is the ARMA 2 Beta patch update, then below that is all the games. "DayZ" is the regular, vanilla mode (you'll need this as the base game) then all the others are different versions of that 'vanilla' mod. DayZ Commander is the hub you'll use to keep things up to date.

Each mode / map has different things on offer, my favourite being the "Epoch" mod as this has all the base building incorporated. There are many other versions that have bits of other mods all mashed in, so its a case of try them to see which you prefer.

I had an issue when trying to download DayZ commander. Every link I clocked tried to take me to an advert? Is it the bit that says 'install now' rather than download?

Am I just going to get crazy amounts of virus's?

P.s. When I say start up the ARMA 2 etc. is it just go into game a start say the first mission then quit?

Hmm, not sure what's happening regarding all the adverts on Commander, its been a few months since I last played DayZ but there were never any ads when I used it, nor did I have any issues with malware, I guess things must have changed?

As for ARMA2, just boot the game up to the main menu, that's enough to install what it needs to automatically.

Or would it work via the six mod thingy? : http://withsix.com/

Im very wary of the Commander. appears its full of malaware now, I havent just built a PC to spend ages getting rid of st like that. The guy that made it and put all that in is a complete moron. Id pay for it via steam ffs!

ETA: I love Day of Defeat
