Alien: Isolation
Discussion
Yeah I spotted the price shortly after posting. Silly question, really.
Mixed reviews cropping up; IGN say the formula wears thin. Given I struggle to finish most games (lack of time and motivation) I reckon I'll fall totally in love with this, play an hour then never pick it up again.

Looks like Doom 3 to me.
Lots of darkness and things jumping out at you.
Difference is that Doom 3 is all scripted, jump scares throughout. The Alien is unscripted and will adapt to how you play, so could be anywhere at any time, meaning each time you replay a section it won't be the same.Lots of darkness and things jumping out at you.

My Steam version has just been unlocked!
Cheers Valve!
Edit to say, there's no surround sound?!
I've checked another game (Tomb Raider) and my system has no problem throwing out DTS there. Whats up with Alien?!
I thought it did because people could hear sounds around then or behind them (on the Oculus Rift demo anyway, people were looking around when they heard something)Cheers Valve!

Yep. And the reviews have mentioned the surround effects being so good.
This is why I tend to stick to consoles; they're not as powerful but there's less fking on with setup.
BTW it's a great game so far, and this was made for VR. The POV is set to give everything a huge sense of scale, textures are brilliant and the lighting and fog all look superb. And in 60fps, too. Little things like dust particles really set this off - I can imagine this on Oculus giving people nightmares.
The Alien got me once and it did give a little fright... But not a jump, more a "Holy fk it's there and there's nothing I can do" kind of scare!
Looking forward to putting more time in.

Oh they're finally doing a remake of the Marine campaign from AvP 1999? I was wondering when that would catch on and be passed off as a new angle.
Or, more appropriately, turning the first film into a gaming experience, since you can't kill it, it's not all that similar to the marine campaign at all.Steve Evil said:

I'm trying to work out if this would be a waste of money to buy.
I was watching a couple 'Let's Play' videos yesterday and even just watching that had me hiding under the desk.
I'm not sure if I'd ever make it past the Main Menu if I bought it
Me and my mates are having an alien night on Saturday watching the film box set and playing the game. I fully expect the neighbours to be kept awake by the sound of our girly screams I was watching a couple 'Let's Play' videos yesterday and even just watching that had me hiding under the desk.

It's got one screen shared between both eyes so 1000x1000 approx.
IT's not the resolution that's the issue it's the fact your eyes are so close to it. It needs to be much higher, the DK2 is much improved over the DK1 one but it still has some way to go before it's as good.
Can't beat it for immersion though.
