Alien: Isolation
Discussion
played much deeper into this now and I'm going to update my slightly harsh review earlier in thread. It is true that in the initial stages anyone who has played Bioshock/Doom 3/ Deadspace etc will find a lot of "seen that before" stuff. However as you progress and the Alien truly starts to show itself then a lot of that cynicism fades. This is a refreshingly different game that is a world away from typical "guns blazing" FPS fare. Once you get deep into it, and the graffiti on the walls stops, and it's just you as the mouse, crouching terrified under a table, while the big bad cat hunts you down, it really does become quite awesome and pant tighteningly tense. I recommend it highly - although much of it feels derivative in the first 2-3 hours - it really is refreshingly different to much of the FPS garbage. And the retro look is very cool.
I'll add also - I'm playing it on Easy and it is still fking hard and tense. Looking at a lot of the reviews - especially IGN's - they seem to be all playing it on hard mode and finding it brutally difficult. Unless you are an ultrageek I suggest taking it on easy or medium because it is a truly harsh and unforgiving game
I got this last night, played about an hour or two, as Krunchin said it is a bit bioshock to start with, it is a slow build up as you are just finding your way around...
i havent actually interacted with anyone yet, and other than a couple of fleeting figures i havent seen anyone..
will be interesting to see how it progresses..

Still not played PT then krunchkin?Deep into this now and nearing the end. Final thoughts - I think a lot of the reviewers screwed themselves by playing hard mode. It's more than hard and frustrating enough on easy. Not sure where all the gripes about the over long campaign come from either. It doesn't seem to have outstayed its welcome - you get the alien stage, the robot stage, the human stage, and then - without adding spoilers - a nice mix up of them all. After my initial misgivings I've found this a gripping game. Still not sure it has shat me up with its non scripted AI as much as Doom 3's "dark coaster" scripted frights did though. And instadeath from facehuggers is immensely annoying in the endgame.

Only played a little bit as was getting ready for competition in Brum, but I am at the bit where you see your ship outside the window then the shutters come down. Its properly spooky, and the squeaky shoes are a genuine masterstroke in a game where you need to be quiet.
I am playing on easy (as I don't have a masochistic streak) and I turned off the Kinect noise sensor, so if there is a noise in the room the alien can hear YOU! as I don't want to die by farting too loud.
I do like how you can peek round corners by tilting your head though, useless, but fun.
Forza Horizon is more fun though.

Playing on medium.
It's challenging but there are fairly easy routes around stuff, there's also obvious areas where on Hard I'd imagine there'd be an extra guard standing or patrolling.
As for the Alien... I've only been killed by it once so far, and that was when I'd fumigated an area to allow me to sneak through it and I ended up not seeing our glossy black friend dangling from the ceiling.
The androids are creepy... and relentless... and infuriating... and chilling... and... and... basically it's these guys that put me on edge, not being sure if you've been spotted by them is really tense. I've almost resigned myself to the fact that 70% of the time the alien is going to kill me if it spots me, but these guys, they always give you that moment to run away but you're not sure if you should.
This is a 9/10 game for anyone that's undecided.

Friend of mine said they'd played it on an Occulus Rift... 10 mins later they had to stop cause they were practically shaking with fear... /me imagines trying to play Alien Isolation
/me imagines playing on Occulus rift
I've been watching playthroughs by Jingles (of WOT fame) and another youtuber... watching at 2am in the morning at the weekend was about one of the scariest experiences I've had from a game
Will probably buy this once I've done my PC upgrade (new video card and more ram)
