Star Trek/other IP space games?
Discussion
So, since Star Trek Online is actively being killed off by the devs, I've quit that, and want to know what else is out there currently? Ideally, I want an STO with a set of devs who do give a damn about the source IP, but that doesn't seem to exist anymore...
(Tried modded GalCiv 1 and 2, tried ST:BC, tried modded Freelancer, tried Darkstar One, tried Spore, none of those really did what I want...)
Heard about EVE, but judging from the thread on here my system would not cope with most normal day to day events in it, being something where hundreds of players doing stuff at once tends to happen quite a lot.
X series - heard of them, even have a few. None of my disks work so I've never actually tried them...
I just want a ship, so anything Starfighter-ish is out (reference Freelancer above, I just do not get on well with that sort of gameplay) an open universe, sandbox gameplay with objectives, and character customisation.
I know it is quite an ask, so being Star Trek is just a would be nice.
Thoughts?

Elite dangerous is the space game of the hour..
It is flying the ship in first person only, but I've found you can avoid combat altogether if you don't like dogfighting.
Still in beta though (probably till christmas) and early access is a bit expensive. Finished game will have the whole milky way galaxy to pootle around in, accurate to current star charts.

Sounds promising. It is flying the ship in first person only, but I've found you can avoid combat altogether if you don't like dogfighting.

If it is Freelancer style, move mouse to aim and fly, click to do stuff sort of play it will be bearable to pilot. If it is STO/EVE style with tonnes of clickies it won't...
Still doesn't get around the whole personal issue of small one-man craft flitting about the galaxy, I much prefer large cruisers or even carriers, just seems a far more sensible way to do interstellar stuff, but that seems far less common...

The ships in elite dangerous are actually massive. The smallest is almost as big as a small house. Some of the artwork shows the scale.Still one man though, (Crew are planned but not in yet)

You can trial Eve and see how your system copes. It is very... addictive
Sometimes you don't need to try stuff to know it wont work. I've seen enough EVE footage to know that much, which is a shame as it seems quite good...I can run Eve on a fairly modest laptop, so I don't think it uses the level of computing resources you are imagining. Whilst there may be hundreds of other players in the same system as you at any one time, if they are not within viewing range, and most of them won't be, your computer only needs to display the few that are. So graphics wise, it's not actually very demanding.
Based on what you've said - although you may need to start saving for a system upgrade - the other space game on the horizon is Star Citizen.
Will be some bigger ships in that one, and you can even walk around inside them. Bit more "Space Opera" to Elite's "True Sandbox" but worth having a look regardless.
It sounds like the X series is perfect for what you are after. The learning curve is steep but they are such goods games. Albion Prelude is about the best of the X series, do not buy the newest one though its nothing like the rest of the series. I only managed 10 minutes before uninstalling it.

I would have mentioned star citizen but I think it's a couple of years off yet. Will be some bigger ships in that one, and you can even walk around inside them. Bit more "Space Opera" to Elite's "True Sandbox" but worth having a look regardless.
The current build is pretty much an arena dogfighting game, all the exploration and stuff that the OP wants is some way off.
One to keep an eye on for the future.

You can get the X3 'war pack' including Terran Conflict and Albion Prelude for £5 (i bought via Amazon).Very good game that allows you to trade, fight or explore your way through the Galaxy with anything from a scout ship to a transporter to a carrier (when you've made enough credits!). Fun thing on Albion Prelude is the stock exchange that allows easy credits to be made, otherwise it can be a bit of a slog to your first space station.
Elite Dangerous is definitely the current game thats worth keeping an eye on short term as it sbeen in beta for a while now, must be due out soon?
X3 Albion Prelude. Really good game if you have the time to get the hang of it. I'd play this over the newer X Rebirth which needs further work by the devs to get it playable. Nearly there though, December should see us with another big update and free dlc.
Big one with you mentioning Freelancer is Star Citizen. Created by Chris Roberts and currently in development. Early pre alpha stage just now but its looking like it will be massive. Ive personally backed it, first and only gamed Ive backed.

The fast forward option is allways a winner. Once you have a few traders, fast forward and boom your making loads of money.Very good game that allows you to trade, fight or explore your way through the Galaxy with anything from a scout ship to a transporter to a carrier (when you've made enough credits!). I have 2 super factory complexes and about 40 trade ships. Currently on 700 million credits but I have a few big fleets that cost be a few billion. Problem is when I try to get them into a big fleet battle they tend to shoot each other by mistake and it becomes a complete mess haha.
Nice fan made vid of some of the Star Citizen content we've seen so far. There's a lot of stuff out there which can be missed so nice to have some stuck together.
